its part mine and part my dads. his cousin bought it in 1962 for 60 quid and last rode it in 1977, its sat in a shed since then.

were going to do a concourse restoration on it and my dads going to do his bike test (my mum gave him 'that look' lol)

stripped it today:

i took the airbox side cover off and this dropped out

the battery still had a little bit of voltage in it.

we've ordered pretty much everything to rebuild it, all the frame and everything will be going for powdercoat on tuesday, im taking all the bodywork to work tomorrow to do a bit of repair work to them, then get them cleaned up. found a decent place down birmingham whos going to paint all the tins. all the chrome and zinc bits are going off on tuesday.

will strip the engine tomorrow and take it to get vapor blasted and bead polished. gonna swap the timing side bush for a roller bearing conversion and get some valve seats put into the head.

more pics soon.

Excellent!

I bet there are BSA fans up and down the country green with envy that you got gifted that lovely bike for free. Hope you make a nice job of it, as I'm sure you will.

I'd have bunged some petrol in it and given it an oppertunistist kick over because nothing gets up enthusiasm for a project like knowing a bike is a runner.

I've seen far worse ones fire up. A mate of mine dragged a plunger-framed B33 out of a barn that was so rotten, the tyres had perished off it. He bunged a new fuel line on it, poured a capful of 2-stroke premix down the sparkplug hole, turned it over on the valve lifter a few times then gave it a big welly. Fired up and idled... then caught fire because it was leaking from the fuel tap but he had an extinguisher to hand for that express purpose.

@stinkwheel

it has no compression whato ever, turns over okay and it was running when it was last used but you can pull the kick lever down with your little finger.

@shaft

nah, totally standard. i was up for building a mad engine and using it for hill climbing or something but my dad wants to put it back to factory and he's bankrolling it, so meh.

You never know, you might get a taste for it.

There's something very satisfying about taking a shed and turning back the clock, to the day it left the factory.

That means nothing. It's a Brit single. They can loose all compression over a few weeks because the oil film between the bore and the rings disappears.

If I leave my Enfield parked up for anything longer than a month without the engine up to compression, the engine will spin freely on the kicker. As soon as it fires up once, it's back to normal.

Glad it was running when it was parked though because a lot of C15s never worked properly (having been manufactured by a striking, disinterested, unionised workforce, employed by idiots who couldn't see the wood for the trees) and were eventually consigned to the back of a workshop in favour of a CB250. Or set on fire for the insurance.

EDIT: If you're putting it to concourse, does that mean you don't want those highway pegs?

Wotcha.

Ah - a BSA with just the right number of cylinders Mr. Green

If you intend using it, convert to 12 volts and think about adding a set of indicators . . . .I've done this to all my Brit bikes - it makes things a tad safer and a lot more reliable.

So, just out of interest - with the SORN rules now in force what's the situation for a bike like this.

Do the new SORN rules only apply to vehicles past a certain date?

Do the DVLA class a bike that hasn't been taxed for this length of time as no longer existing? - if the answer to the SORN question is no then, is there some sort of FUBAR clause for people to be able to do restorations?

and if so is it just a case of applying for the paperwork... although I'd presume since this bike appears to have stayed in the same place under the same ownership the paperwork might be easily found.

It won't appear on the SORN register until someone applies for a v5. Once it pops up on the system it'll be treated the same as any other vehicle.

Have you checked its still on the database? And if the reg still matches the bike? Common for bikes that have been stored that long to disappear and the reg gets reassigned

Probably the safest thing to do. I would suggest that the old style reg document(s) you have would long term be quite appealing to anyone wanting the bike in future so keep hold of them and don't let the DVLA lose them.

All the best

Chris
Nice one! My second bike was a C15, 1963 model acquired in 1967. First bike was a Tiger Cub.

Did many a mile on the C15. Standard to/ from work + a lot around North Wales. I upped the compression ratio to 11.5 to 1 on mine with a domed piston + roller big end + lowered gearing so it would take off like a rocket. Had to be run on 5 star petrol with that CR. I often wondered how the guy who bought it from me was able to cope when 5* went off the market.

Have fun and keep the pics coming.
