wow, that brings back memories, my first bike was a C15 exactly like that one, bought it around 1982 for about £25, changed the engine three times as I kept destroying them Confused

I still say that engine would have run as-is if you got fuel and electricity into it.

Looks like there is a seperate valve seat on the exhaust valve from your pictures anyway. Experience of many friends running old brit bikes says two things. 1) Valve recession on unleaded fuel is not generally very severe and is very slow if it happens at all. 2) It doesn't cost any more to have a hardened seat fitted AFTER recession has happened.

They all stopped using lead additives because they clag up the engine with hard mineral deposits and just started running on unleaded as standard. Just keep an eye on the exhaust tappet, if it keeps tightening, THEN consider sending the head away for a new seat.

Non-EP grade gear oil was often green in colour.

If you haven't already tried it, look into "wellseal" gasket compound which you can apply with a fine paintbrush.

Also, bonded seal washers (also known as Dowty washers) are a miracle of modern technology which allow anywhere oil might leak out around a threaded fitting to remain totally oiltight at a fraction of the torque used on a copper or aluminium crush washer. They are also re-useable. Fit them on all your drain plugs and oilway banjos.

I have to agree with you.

I have utterly no interest in a motorcycle which has been primped, polished and "restored" to a level of finish higher than it left the factory with.

People sit there every evening with a polishing mop and a tube of autosol removing 40 years of hard-earned patina and any character the bike might have aquired in that time. Like the one in question where the paint's been rubbed through on the toolbox by thousands of miles of the riders leg being up against it.

The fact is that at the end of the day you put in a lot of work and finish up with nothing either unique or particularly special. There will be a highly polished, concourse rebuilt BSA starfire at every classic motorcycle show you go to, people just walk past them becauew by definition, they all look the same.

I like motorcycles to look like they've been used. By all means clean off the rust, paint bits that need painting and wipe the engine over with an oily rag but if I was doing it, I'd do just enough to make it functional and to prevent further deterioration.
