I've always loved small, light bikes. That or massive bikes with huge engines. I don't really do in between. The idea of building something simple, light and aesthetically pleasing makes me go all warm and fuzzy. Building something yourself also means that if you don't like it, you can chop/modify/fix it to look the way you want, rather than wishing the designer of your shiny new bike had the power of telepathy and had known what you wanted.

Anyway, enough waffle. More chopping, cleaning up the base of the frame:

https://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6508/675w.jpg

Messy, lots of stuff we don't need here. Mr. Angle grinder and his mate Mr. 'fuckloads of filing by hand' combine to fix it.

https://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8739/dmnk.jpg

https://img818.imageshack.us/img818/5425/t6rv.jpg

Much better.

Have some poly wheels on the way for the grinder so I can take the frame and tank back to bare metal easily.

Done a bit more on the swingarm too, mainly filing and smoothing. Going to hit the frame with gloss black engine enamel so got to get everything smooth as possible.

So, I just woke up at like 2, and can't get back to sleep. Wandering around, I caught sight of my rims and thought 'those spokes are shitty looking' So drastic measures ensued.

https://img812.imageshack.us/img812/8610/56kr.jpg

https://img823.imageshack.us/img823/6710/z2h8.jpg

https://img28.imageshack.us/img28/2108/r0sd.jpg

https://img822.imageshack.us/img822/882/ifhq.jpg

https://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3488/snqa.jpg

I plastidipped a set of spoke rims. It may be a first. I realised that I wasn't going to be able to match the finish on the brake plate with paint... So I plastidipped that too (still slightly wet in the pic). Quite happy with how it all came out. And if I don't like it, I can peel it right off.

So why plastidip? Well plastidip peels off as a sheet when thick enough, when applied to spoked rims what you get is a weakspot at the bottom of the spoke where the spoke meets the rim. If you tug the plastidip strongly, it'll tear off leaving the spoke untouched and still covered in plastidip.

Do it on CG rims and what you get is:

https://img826.imageshack.us/img826/700/cnul.jpg

Black hubs, spokes and chrome rims. Boss.

also, did you need to prep the hub surface before applying the plastidip?

Plastidip is very durable, resistant to impacts, sound, heat, shock and damp proof. Only prep you need to do is wire wool or sand the surface smooth if you have bubbles of corrosion on the surface as they will still show through the rubber layer. No need for primer, but it can be sprayed over primer. Only thing I found is spraying directly on to chrome, it can be difficult to get the plastidip to stick as it's a shiny smooth surface. I reckon a layer of clear plastic primer would get it to stick though.

Best thing is, if you balls it up, you can just peel it off in a sheet in a second and retry.

Oh, forgot to say, when you mask holes/mating surfaces or anything else off, remove the mask BEFORE the plastidip dries or prepare to get very handy with a scalpel. Removing masking tape will pull the plastidip layer off the rim.

It's a sprayable rubber coating that applies like paint and can be built up in layers but when dry forms one mass. There are many colours that can be built up on top of each other and you can get glossifier to make it look like gloss paint, pearlizer to make it look pearlescent...

Rims being plastidipped:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR14nrlJxZc

Rims having plastidip removed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHbXu4R8Zls

It feels like soft touch rubber handled tools to touch.

I'll definitely give it a go, is that just the black plastidip or did you primer it before?

Awesome thanks! Guessing the whole lot peels off if you use the gloss on top and don't like it? Sorry about all the questions, hadn't even heard of it till this thread!

Yes, that's why you use the glossifier rather than a normal clear coat. Normal clearcoat will work, but it makes the dip come off in little pieces which is a pain in the ass. Still easier to remove than paint though.

Righto, in progress pics:

Stripping. Painstaking fucking stripping.

Bitz:

Rearsets from, er, something.

Big ass 'make it run like shit' filter.

https://img42.imageshack.us/img42/5336/l7zc.jpg

The carb is still filthy (though internally clean) but my mate is awaiting delivery of a sonic cleaner so I'm holding out on that.

Forks, tank, swingarm and torque rod have gone down to be vapour blasted to finish off the cleaning process before painting/polishing. Things should move a bit quicker now as the girlfriend was moaning about me spending too much time on it, so she had to go.

Have some progress. The frame is now mostly stripped, rather than sort of stripped. Cut a few more unecessary brackets and wire holders off it, filed back smooth by hand. The top and bottom yolks were stripped right back, painted with alloy engine enamel and then baked in the oven to cure along with the brake levers and cable retainer. I have the front end mostly sorted now, am waiting purely on the forks, which are being polished as we speak, some shocks, and the swingarm, which is being vapour blasted to clean any gunk left over off before painting. Once I have this stuff in my posession I can bolt this back together a little bit and get an idea of how the tank and sea unit are going to sit, and also where to mount the rearsets.

How long are the shocks you need? I have some very tarty widely coiled chrome units that I believe are 330 or 340mm long. They're these ones...

Used for under 500 miles.

Hmm, think the standard shocks are 330mm and have a top/bottom mount of 12mm. How much would you want, they do look very nice.

https://img545.imageshack.us/img545/8711/a5hb.jpg

Tank stripped. Bit of a clean up and laquer as is I reckon. Looks so, so sweet.

Dunno, £30? They're too hard for a cub but that only weighs 75kgs or something, look pretty though.

Sounds good Garth, I'm kind of hoping the CG won't weigh much more than 85kg when it's done but we'll see. I wet and dried the tank tonight to remove some nasty marks it had, it now looks good, a few little dents and just enough 'patina' to look right but not so crabby it looks shit. These pics are pre polish though, looks a bit shinier now. I'm knee indenting the tank, then laquering it as is.

I'm not sure what end result you're after with the fuel tank, I read that bit of the thread days ago. If you want some patina, don't lacquer it, just give it a wipe with an oily rag from time to time.

Also worth hammeriting the underside, road crap get flung up and rusts it.

I left the underside painted still, but I probably will underseal it.

They are reasonably good close up, without relacing the rims or spraying them totally, it's a good compromise. They are covered in in paint specks from where I was stripping in my room lol.

this looks awesome-I'll be watching this...

I might be stealing your plasti-dip idea for my rims;
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1385174_508519225910440_317204500_n.jpg

Took me 13 hours to strip and clean these rims -they've been sat in crud and crap for the past 3 years and not cleaned once lol. I got the rims done to a high standard then couldn't be bothered to do the spokes (all done by hand ya see)

Thumbs Up for a great build thread!
