Today, me and my mate looked at those six pots I have on my ZX7R, lot of pots were stuck so we took it apart and it was quite interesting. It took lot of time and swearing and the best part of all that was, that it worked better before we cleaned it. Laughing

EDIT: There is still lot of air in the system, had not time to bleed it properly, don't worry I won't be riding it like that. I just filled the system up to see, if it leaks. Thumbs Up

Have you not considered changing the Tokico out for 4 pot Nissins?

On a side note. How do you rate the ZX7? I'm seriously considering getting one I have seen (possible next weekend). Wanted to get owners views on them.

I'm gonna keep those six pots, for now.

The ZX7R is a great machine, if you set the suspension right, then it's very smooth and stable bike, easy to ride, fast enough, 120mph is there in no time and the bike does not force you to go any faster. The top speed should be around 260kph (162.5mph), I ran around 230 on it and there was still enough power and gears to push it. The bike is also very confortable if you have the lock the tank with knees riding style. I'm 190cm tall and there's enough room for even taller lads. The engine is a masterpiece, very smooth and viceless. The power/torque is there delivered very predictably which makes it a perfect bike for public roads. Gearbox works alright and the clutch was strange at first, I've never had hydraulic clutch before, but when I set the lever as I liked it, I got used to it. The bike is a quite longer than the NC27 I had, but that's something you can not change, fast bikes need to be long, to be stable at high speeds. I mean, it's nothing to ride gymkhana with, but the lenght is no problem if you know a thing or two about motorcycles, still not a gymkhana machine, but agile enough to get through the town to your favourite country road, where it works the best. The bike goes smooth from 2500 rpm up to the top, no vibes. I haven't touched the carbs yet, so that's why it's rough at low rpm.

The only thing that is a bit discouraging is the exhaust that corrodes quite fast, I'm gonna have to repair and paint mine, there's one small crack and some rust.

The second thing is, be sure you set the suspension at least into factory settings. Mine was not and it was quite scary to open the throttle. Right now it's great, I'm not scared of the bike any more, I can ride it fast through corners all day long, certain about every move. The suspension is the best I've ever experienced so far, when it's set right. Smooth and rigid, just how I like it.

Side note: I got a good deal on the ZX7R, I originally wanted an older ZXR, I'm not sure if '93 or newer, well this one: https://raresportbikesforsale.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/zxr-lights.jpg

That does not mean the ZX7R is worse, I just like old motorcycles and those head lights on that '93 look just great. That '93 and my '96 ZX7R looks identical otherwise, I mean on the paper, the same engine, suspension, frame and so on. So, it should work very similarly.

Wow great write up, thank you Thumbs Up

The bike is currently in a shop front which the shop allows its customers to use to sell bikes for a commission.

It's a 97 so P2/3. Its boxed in by a couple of other bikes so couldn't have a good look at it yet. They will get it out and pull it into the back lane for me to have a good look over.
He's asking £1600 which is too much in my opinion. If the bike checks out, especially brakes and exhaust (thanks for heads up) i'll offer him £1300 max.

At the minute there is some great bikes all for around the same price within 30 miles of me.

96 Thundercat (looks very well looked after)
01 GSXR600
99 GSXR600
97 CBR600F
01 ZX6R
03 Fazer

But I keep fancying the ZX7 Laughing

The only thing that concerns me is the brakes as i'll be riding through the winter and the 6 pots have a reputation of being pretty dire in such conditions.

Last month a pair of Nissins went for as little as £25. They normally go for about £100'ish when they're are up so would be worth swapping for me.

I got my ZX7R for 1270GBP, well the brakes were mess, but working, only 1 pot in each calliper was really stucked. There are a plenty of brake callipers that would fit with no mods needed, if you feel the need of having something else on your bike. With some brackets you can even fit there some modern monoblocks.
I ride motorcycles mostly in nice weather only, so I'm gonna keep my callipers clean and working. Thumbs Up

The '99 GSXR is also a nice bike, the quality of engineering is a bit worse I'd say, it's a Suzuki, but it is a nice looking bike. I've never ridden one my self but I had a closer look at one, shame it's not a 750, that be a great ride. They say SRAD bikes have a gearbox made out of butter with lot of fake neutrals. But I can't really tell.

The '01 ZX6R also has tokico six pots and the smartest decision would be the '97 CBR600F. I'd have to see those bikes to decide.

EDIT: I don't need a motorcycle to commute, so I take what I like. I like old bikes with story behind them and ZXR is a ''legend'' of many race events all over the planet that I watched on Tv when I was a kid and now I can ride one. Razz

4 pot Tokico's from a K1 ish GSXR600/TL1000S also fit as i have them on my ZRX.

ZX7R is definitely a bike to own.

Its heavy and a bit cumbersome at slow speeds, but get it upto speed and its steady as a rock. The engine has lots of grunt, but still benefits from a small front/bigger rear sprocket.

Look out for the exhaust downpipes as they rot out and any electrical gremlins. Make sure to see if the starter button works with the bars at each lock stop. Sounds stupid, but if it doesnt, then you need to take the ignition barrel apart and resolder the wires. ( I started mine by bridging the solenoid for about 2 months till i had the time to fix it!)

On the topic of 6 pots, as wonderful as they may be now... Give it a week and they will be back to being poor performing again. You can prolong the inevitable by removing the dust seals and packing them with red rubber grease, but it never lasts long....

Am I right in think it is just the 6 pot design is the issue and not Tokico in general then?

RhynoCZ, forgot to mention, yep hydraulic clutches are a bit strange at first. The Tuono was like that which nearly dropping it literally yards after buying it. I stalled mid lean pulling out of a junction. Thankfully I got my foot down quick and had the strength to pull it upright before it fell Embarassed

Found this too:
It was a ZX7 but now a hybridfrankenmix thingy

I like the front end change, but seems a lot of work to do it.

Have 4 pots the same performance? I could get here some callipers cheaper than a brand new set of seals for those six pots. But, I want it to brake at least like those six pots.

What other callipers will fit?

I couldn't even take off, I set the lever to the farest position, so the clutch started to work in the middle and it was alright, I guess. The springs and plates are brand new, so it'll take some time, till it all ''sits down'' a bit. But, it's nothing to be worried about, I haven't stalled the bike since I bought it, all downshifts are smooth. Thumbs Up

I rebuilt my 6-pot Tokikos, took only a few weeks for a seal to pop on the POS (and they were crap before that). I replaced them with 4-pot Nissins (which I also rebuilt) and they've been superb.

So, you say no brackets nor mods needed? Just take off six pots, put on whatever ''classic'' four pots? Thinking

You sir, sold me the four pot technology. Smile

Mine came from a Triumph. I had to mill the logos off. Google your bike for the mod, that's how I tracked down mine (there were loads of suitable doner bikes).

My bro has the 4 pot nissins on his 7r, rates the mod highly. I had them off a few months ago to change a tyre and all of the pistons still moved properly, despite it being used over winter. The Tokicos are corrosion prone, seal munching pieces of crap.

Yes.

The Nissin 4pots or the Tokico 4pots bolt straight up. All clearances are the same.

The 4s from the TL1000S are pretty sharp, not as sharp as the Nissins on my old CBR600RR though, they were so brutal.

I can't complain about the Nissins on the Blade, easily the best brake setup I've ever experienced.

Do I have to get a new pump for new callipers to improve their performance or is that ZX7R brake pump alright? I don't want to spend a fortune, I just want to keep the good times roll.

Motorcyclists here call it pump, car drivers cylinder, anyway, thanks, I'm gonna search the internet for some callipers. Thumbs Up

What do you think about these? They should fit according to the internet, which could be just another disinformation. I'd give them to my mate for proper cleaning, new set of seals and pads. Thumbs Up
