Now, I have an old school Hornet with the 16" front wheel and would like to upgrade to a 17" for better tyre choices... Normally I know I would need a new wheel, discs, etc...

However, my current Hornet has SP1 4 pot Nissin calipers unlike the standard 2 pot jobbies they have. Now I very much like these brakes as they are hundreds of times better than the Hornet ones!

So... if I was to upgrade to a 17" wheel... Would I be able to keep the discs? Or would I also need to upgrade the discs & calipers?

I think I know the answer, I hope I'm wrong and someone else can say if they'll fit!

Ta

You need the discs from the 17 inch wheels, you should be able to keep the callipers as the actual dimensions of the discs are the same, which is why the 17 inch wheel works with a standard 16 inch bike.

If your hornet is this type of three spoke wheel

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-HORNET-FRONT-WHEEL-16-/230787654429?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item35bc04231d

then the vtr1000 firestorm 17" would be an ideal replacement since they have the same style spokes and the same disc bolt pattern (probably even the same discs)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-VTR1000F-VTR1000-VTR-1000-F-Firestorm-98-FW-Front-Wheel-/180977333637?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item2a2316f585

The vtr1000 rear wheel is actually the same width as the later smooth spoke hornet wheels at mt5.50 so are better suited to the 180 tyre, but I would imagine you might have to swap bearings and stuff due to the vtr using a 20mm axle (only the inner id of the bearing changes for most.

If your want six spoke wheels the cbr 400/600 vfr400/750 wheels cb400sf wheels would probably do depending on the width (some are only mt3.00),

Most of the time the only difference in the discs between a lot of Hondas (with the same bolt pattern) are the diameter and the thickness of the actual disc and sometimes the bolts thickness, alignment with the calipers is rarely an issue.

The ebay links are by no means the cheapest available it was just two similar pictures to show the spoke types are the same.

I am looking to do a wheel swap on my own bike (cb-1 nc27) only I was looking at early hornet three spoke rears (mt5.00) and was planning on fitting the entire vtr front end.

The 180/55-17 would be too wide for my needs I want to use a 160 section tyre, and from what I can tell 160/60-70x17 are the correct sizes for the rim the 180 should be on an mt5.50+ rim.

Is there any chance you could take a few measurements for me from your rear wheel, I would like to know the width between the sprocket and the disc and the width of the swingarm on the inside so that I can check if the chain will line up.

cheers

sean
