Time has been hard to find this last week tbh, not acheived much!

Starting to think finding the time to get the finicky bits done like spraying the rad black etc may be more difficult than i thought, so going to concentrate on getting the bike back together and useable for the summer, then have another strip down and rebuild in winter.

just few bits to update really, started on the carbon infills:

Base coat:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0075_zpseddcde92.jpg

carbon laid and resin on:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0077_zpse96e3ab5.jpg

These are a long way from perfect, but they arent too bad for my first crack at using carbon. Will get a pair professionally done i think, the bike deserves it! am sure i could learn and eventually be able to turn out a perfect part, but this shit aint cheap, and i dont have the disposable cash right now!

fitted up some Ti bolts on yokes and fork pinch's and mocked up where the headlight is likely to sit:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_000001_zps5d578245.jpg

and new speedo arrived:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0076_zpsda109bda.jpg

Its the KOSO Db01r +, which means its about 10mm bigger all round, larger screen, programmable rev counter, programmable odo, engine management light etc etc. Nice little unit, and only £10 more than the previous version Smile

Yoke is in the post, so hopefully start getting some shit done!

so... My yoke is finished, is in the mail now, hopefully get it tomorrow!

here she is next to the crappy standard one:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/WP_000446_zpsa3yrtxau.jpg

So, today i decided to do some small bits after work, first i took this:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0082_zps2ldzfjst.jpg

drilled cap for tubes, made a bracket and bolted up loosely:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0083_zpss2zuyujm.jpg

not without sticking a 10mm drill bit into my hand first.....

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0081_zpsf584a002.jpg

then i made a few other small improvements to the bikes wiring, and started on getting the Mt03 light loom done. However finding it hard to make definitive length choices for any of the wiring with no tank/bars etc to sort routing for stuff, so most of that will prob wait til i get bike back together.

MT03 light was fouling the OE damper bracket like so:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0084_zps637e5e03.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0085_zps7163588c.jpg

So hacksaw came out and now:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0087_zpsf909d427.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0088_zps2f87dcaa.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0089_zps382c282d.jpg

much better Smile

hoping i can get some more bits done on monday!

Update!!

Yoke arrived, so naturally i legged it into the garage to see how everything fits up, bare in mind that nothing in these pics is accurately positioned, just trying to get a feel for how things are gonna go and help me make some decisions!

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0102_zps87e7104d.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0101_zpsde082569.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0098_zps08089733.jpg

But yeah, there ya go. It fits perfectly, bars clear the fork top adjusters nicely, clocks will fit in the gap behind headlight nicely, and be visible even laid horizontal in line with the yoke. Should be in black to match lower yoke by end of monday Smile

Starting to get super excited about this build now! Need my wheels and bodywork back from painters before i can make any real decisions on cables, but going to measure up lines monday and get some new black braided lines made up and a new line in black for rear.

Then its just a case of getting bike back together, measuring up new cables, extending/shortening looms as required, and getting stuff bolted up and then off for an MOT Smile

Slight deviation from the original plan......

Mates had a set of kwakka wheels ( 05 zx10 front , 05 zx6 rear) kicking around in his loft for ages, i really like the look of the Kwak wheels, so i chucked em in the van and took them back to the garage to see what could be done....

Front as i see it at mo, will just need some sleeves for the fork leg clamps making up. spacer and disc positioning looks spot on Smile

Rear is going to be a bit more involved, Going to have to run a zx10 rear caliper and carrier, but it doesnt fit properly...yet. I have it locked in position currently, and would probably be just fine, but id rather it was 100% correct so going to talk to a few people tomorrow see what can be done about adding extra material to the carrier. Add some custom spacers and should all bolt up nicely

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0114_zpsf140dcec.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0115_zps54938b43.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0116_zps3285648f.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0117_zpsf08dfb89.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/IMG-20140421-WA0005_zps6d5ddb5d.jpg

I bought these zx wheels for £200 inc discs, rear caliper, spindles and spacers etc. Front is slightly buckled, but thats £90 to have straightened out, then probably somewhere around £150 for spacers and sleeves etc to make it all work. So around £450 for wheels, discs, rear caliper and all associated hardware to make it work, i already have a spare set of rubber for them.

I did consider buying the zx10 forks too:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0121_zps89744b6c.jpg

Love that gold colour and matches everythin else perfectly, but alas its probably more work ( and unnecessary expense) to make the 10 forks work on my bike than it is to make the wheels work in my forks!

This is how i plan to make front wheel work:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/zx10intogsxrsleeve2_zps54018a17.png

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/ZX10intoGSXRsleeve_zps6d829d91.png

Simple but effective Smile going to email my CNC guy tomorrow and get a price. going to play around with rear caliper carrier some more tomorrow, if i can get that working in a way im happy with ill measure up some spacers and order them too.

also got the top yoke etc primed:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0118_zps46c8898b.jpg

Painted:

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0119_zpsdf9124e2.jpg

https://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq205/deangte/DSC_0120_zps2b75d407.jpg

Now to leave it to cure overnight, then tomorrow a light rub down and some Lacquer Smile

couple weeks worth updates which really didnt amount to much unfortunately.... Few problems at work and unexpected expenditure means progress has been slower than i would have liked!

Ok so i fucked up the paint on the yokes, so that was the final push i needed into getting them and the bars powdercoated satin black to match everything else on the bike. Should be picking those up on saturday morning.

Also got a few teaser pics from the painter, wheels are finished, bodywork is being cleared as i type, so should have that back by weekend also Smile

Working this weekend, so going to be next weekend before i get chance to bolt stuff up and figure out lines/cables etc. Undertray has been delayed again, not going to get that til around 30th, so hoping to get everything else sorted by then!

picked my bodywork an wheels up today, not got time to get them back on properly but quick sneak peek....

She's back on 2 wheels!

Couple more weekends work in her i reckon before ill be happy to take her for MOT, then im gonna get out and ride this beauty as much as physically possible ahead of ANOTHER strip down over the coming winter to finish her off completely...

Tomorrow im going to get lines and cables measured up and ordered, have the clocks to wire in, some loom shortening and extending work to do, reinstate headlight wiring etc, fit new headstock bearings (AGAIN!) and a quick once over, bleed up the new brake lines and she should be good for an MOT Smile

Just a quick thing.

I'm assuming the zx10 spindle is a bit smaller than the gsxr one and you need the spacers to go in the fork legs?

I've never been a massive fan of spacing any load bearing surfaces in the way you plan to. You'd be better using the gsxr spindle and changing the bearings in the wheels to suit the larger diameter spindle. That way you don't need any spacers for the forks and you'd just have to machine the zx10 spacers out to a bigger ID - or just get them remade instead.

you are correct, the spacers/sleeves are to allow me to use the zx10 spindle on the gsxr fork legs.

I initially looked at changing the bearings to accomodate the gsxr spindle, , however there is no way of doing this without removing material from the wheel itself, and i would much rather add material than remove it.

The spacers will be made from CNC'd 7075 Ally, and are being made to be an exact interference fit, so i dont really see any issues as far as strength is concerned, but thanks for the input dude.

I wouldn't worry about the spacers, KTMs have them like that anyway, common to use sleeves as well when doing sumo conversions Thumbs Up

If its a case of removing material or making the spacers then you made the right decision!

I'm very surprised you can't get the right bearings though. I thought they made then in every shape or size but obviously not Laughing

I had trouble getting ones for the RS125 wheels to match them to the KTM. I don't think everyone uses that size bearing Laughing Shame really.

Tbh Paddy im surprised i haven't had more of that on this forum! Laughing

I like to think that what i am building here is a damn site more subtle, and dare i say it classy than an awful lot of "streetfighters" out there. I dont want the bike looking like some monstrous calamity of thrown together parts, and nor did i want to take the "dominators and renthals" approach either. Its worth noting that although the bike will pretty much remain like this for the summer, it is a loooong way from being "finished".

At the end of the day we are all different, and i didnt build this bike looking for the approval of others, i built it because it gets mine!! Smile

Needs a fancy set of headers, that aren't designed to be hidden by fairings.

Looks nice, but I think those current headers ruin the look

I agree with Phil, some new headers and that will look great!

I like it, not overdone and impractical looking like most streetfighters.

One thing I would do is remove the seat cowl. On the last photo it looks out of line with the rest of the bike and just looks odd Laughing

Or you could get hold of another one that doesn't sort of flair upwards as the rear of the current one looks at a good level

Cheers guys, appreciate the comments Smile

Headers - The headers do look gash at the mo, they are actually Ti Headers from an 05 GSXR 1000, and look pretty nice when clean, unfortunately these have spent most of their life under heat wrap and have tarnished and generally look shitty, they will get cleaned up over winter, and either stay looking all nice and shiny and heat discoloured, or if they still dont look decent, they will be painted black, along with the engine and rad. If they still dont look right, ill be looking out for a set of Yoshimura headers, as those look real pretty!!

Although that may be pretty pointless, as they will get semi covered at some point with a bellypan of sorts. However im keen not to use an aftermarket "streetfighter" unit, and want to build my own from some cut down OE fairings.

The seat cowl wasn't quite on properly in the pics, the whole seat unit was only on loosely, it does sit a lot better now its all tightened down and lined up!

The only massively non OE part is the undertray, which should be arriving sometime soon, thats a bikestyle unit with the rear lights built in, Thats gonna be a marmite part, but i reckon im gonna love it, so thats the most important box ticked!

Smile

sorry didnt read all comments, personally id put some flatter and narrower bars on and you need a front master cylinder off something with a built in reservoir,

also a small fly screen they look shit but make a massive difference .

looking good.

Big front end was always the plan, I prefer high bars to flat, just a personal preference thing, and wanted fat bars as they give a more aggressive look.

Master cylinder is a Radial Master off a zx10r, so its staying, some things just have to be function over form! the reservoir now sits correctly, was waiting on a bar mount bracket to arrive when pics were taken.

Bike is booked in for MOT on tuesday.... fingers crossed!
