Surprised that there isn't much talk of this.

Sounds like a good move to me. Cal will be miffed though, he specifically wanted to be a factory rider.

Ducati deny it here:

IMO, it could well be a shrewd move. They haven't got a hope of winning this year, so why not start gaining data for when the whole of MotoGP goes to Open class regs in a year or two.

Respected Italian website GPOne.com is reporting that Ducati is considering racing in MotoGP as an Open entry

I'm considering re-mortgaging my house and buying a Panigale to commute with. I probably won't though.

Seems to me the riders would still be Ducati staff but racing with less restriction. At the end of the day if Ducati want to develop the bike well then this is probably the way forward.

More engines and more fuel, in return for using a spec ecu

In that case I'd like to see a bike with a 60l tank and 7 engines.

Softer tyres too. Which is the only reason CRT teams weren't worse than they were.

Open class use the same ECU as the prototypes but cannot use their own software.

20 litres for the protos
24 for the rest.

Softer bridgestones for open class and 12 engines.
5 engines for prototypes all sealed at the beginning of the season.

I suppose the tyres would be a big plus for Ducati

Not when they have been struggling when in the dry, and performing better in the wet at lower speeds and lower grip.
