I'd really love to get into this. Is it possible without having much experience on bikes? Only track near me is Three Sisters, which looks pretty decent.

I actually finally rode my SM pit bike in SM trim on a track yesterday - much fun and my wrists coped with it - though may be different on an outdoor track.

Might try and get along to Lydd.
Is there any 'practice' before the event 'vet? Wouldn't mind getting an idea of where the track goes and so on first Smile.

With any racing, I'd always suggest getting some track time first - you'll get much better 'value for money' than paying out for racing.
Ie, last night was a 4 hour 'open pit lane' for £20 and I was improving all the time - if it was a race, I'd have got a lot less time for more money.
You don't NEED experience, but obviously it can help if you do have some - having raced big bikes, done minimoto and so on, while I started off slow, I improved steadily - if I wasn't conversant with the relatively fine throttle control needed on the smooth indoor track I was riding on, I likely wouldn't have progressed so well (I did end up on the floor once - but then others managed a good few times, so maybe I just wasn't trying hard enough Smile ).

Norasport does SM pit bike rounds at Three sisters it seems. However they do do 'proper' supermoto - so on and off road combined.
Unless you go for a one make series like Matchams, most race series will travel around the country.

The 'open pit' is ideally what I'd be looking for. I'd be more than happy to plod along round track at my own pace, learning techniques and advancing myself slowly. I have no interest in racing yet, that'd be a while down the line. I might have to give Three Sisters a ring and ask about it, surely there'll be some open track time which allows pits on.

In an ideal world, it would be nice to have a blast before I commit to buying one. It does seem like an ideal solution for me atm. A hobby by tinkering with the bike, thrill and fun by doing track time, and ripping a bike around track. All = awesomeness. Thumbs Up

It's fairly hard to find track time for pit bikes, but there are some places.

You're a bit far from where I am now, but if you happen to be down south, you're welcome to have a go on mine.

Or, if you haven't got anything sorted, will be back up Norf at some point I expect.

Oh and yes tinkering; while mine is a relatively 'better' model, I still found 4 missing bolts (including 3 of 4 engine bolts from an upper engine mounts) after last night - someone else also brought me back a the carb trumpet, which it turns out I'd left on the track somewhere!

3S do the charity lap things, you can probably turn up, pay £10 or so, get 10 laps (or whatever the rate is).

On a supermoto pit bike?

Not seen anywhere offering them up for others to use, bar as part of a race series perhaps (I know matchams are planning to have a rent-a-bike.)

I appreciate the offer, if your up this end for a race I might have to come down and spectate. I had a thumpstar 125 a few years back, and while it was only off road it was still the best wee thing I've had. So I can only guess on track its better, im not really fond of MX.
What's the rules with gear? Is it a one piece needed, or just leathers?

Also, what make is your bike? And what size?

Mine is a M2R SM, which is a ready made 140cc supermoto for racing in 'stock' classes. It's a 'CRF70' frame, which is reasonably big.
I'm not intending to specifically compete in a series - possible I might. However, often based in West Yorks.
I don't like off road on pit bikes, especially smaller pit bikes, but do like it on full size bikes.
Required gear will depend on where you are, but one piece leathers make sense and are probably going to be required for any actual racing.

I've been looking at those m2r's, get awesome reviews. I'm unsure to whice size to get, crf50 or 70. I haven't a clue what size the thumpstar was, but I remember is being small and cool haha.
I enjoyed off road with the pit, maybe I was just uncomfortable as I was new to it, but it was fun. I just think SM would be so much better.

I knew one piece is the best idea, just wasn't sure if it was necessity. Wouldn't wanna turn up in 2piece and not get on.
I'll prob look into 2nd hand leathers until I get comfy on the bike and track.
I'm gonna go down to Three sisters and have a good look and chat, maybe even volunteer to marshal.

Never bought a new one piece - must have bought at least 7 over the years.

Generally the trend is towards the CRF70s, however you may find tighter/indoor tracks are better on the 50s.

If you have a look around here, binge has posted a load of stuff about them generally.

I'll start looking into leathers now, and for more tracks around here where pits can get on.
I've been reading alot of what binge has been posting about pits, as well as others.

Info is much appreciated! Thumbs Up
