Bit of an update.
had a bit of an issue with the fuelling, the bike would go to 70 in 3rd, but drop it to 5th to cruise and it was stuttering like it was about to go onto reserve. so carb off time and have a shufti.

So tank and panels off:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1290_zps062e9c3b.jpg

Airbox off:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1292_zps98d1e657.jpg

fuel and vac pipes off and carb out!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1294_zps35f37953.jpg

thought i'd check the needle valve side first, found this in one, the needle valve wasn't in properly:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1296_zpsd12326bf.jpg

then I found this:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1297_zps69ac5b03.jpg

cuntbiscuits. Mad

anyone know where I'm likely to get a replacement for a reasonable cost?

Going to a local breakers in a bit.

Superglue. Although it isn't a permanent fix, replacement at some stage advised.

FWIW NRP lists as £32 each, so you have a ballpark figure to compare for your breaker's price

Looks like its a bonded diaphragm; so the 'part' is the whole slide and diaphragm.
CMSL, who only show the 83 US Model 'Ascot', but assuming same part, then, pt no:- 16111-MF5-671 Listed at 114 Euro's and No-Longer-Available.
Dave Silvers Spares dont give price but also say NLA.
Gonna be hobsons, by the looks.

well I went to the local breakers (Bike Bits in Coventry) who said that it was a bit 'retro' for them, try using glue from a puncture repair kit or try Honda.

so round the corner to Honda, they looked on their parts computer and said
"We can get it here for the 15th,
for £142.18"
Shocked
One Hundred and Forty Two Quid!!!!!

so i've bookmarked the site Map provided, and gone and bought a puncture repair kit! Thumbs Up
but i'm thinking the patches will be a bit thick, so i thought what product do I know of that is fairly tough, fairly thin, rubber and easily available?

...so i've popped in the doctors and got some free condoms! Very Happy
gotta be worth a try, after all Honda were trying to shaft me! Wink

What about Marigolds (rubber gloves)? I'd have thought dunkies might be a bit thin but definitely right with the rubber cement Thumbs Up

this sounded like a better idea than using a seperatus apparatus.

so out came the marigolds!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1298_zpsf0f46226.jpg

going to leave it overnight before sticking it back in the carb, so the glue can cure. Thumbs Up

If you find out what the carbs actually are by what model and make they are, your welcome to come try a slide from one of the sets of NTV650 carbs I have around.....

The slides look very similar.

I've heard of quite a few people successfully using heavy duty sex wellies as a temporary repair, but I cant imagine them being immune to petrol vapour for any great length of time, nor Marigolds for that matter.

Better get saving OP and be greatful your Honda dealer reckon they can still get the part, DS and CMSNL don't list them.

it will be a temporary thing, just for a few weeks. i'll either get a replacement set of carbs on fleabay for parts or i'll get the slider refurbished.

it's a Keihin carb, just trying to see if I can find a model number on the carb. if I do I may well be popping over to see you in Cov!

EDIT: it's a Keihin VD carb.

Well the repair worked, loads more mid-range power and no stuttering at 60!
I've swapped the rear indicators too as I kept kicking the old ones when I was swinging my leg over! So now it's become project tart up! Smile

The indicators are in the wrong place, you're missing a rail that runs under the tail piece, from the top shock mount to the number plate area and the lamps should be on the end of that.

My guess is they've been removed to fit a rack, then the rack has been removed and the original fittings lost.

Sounds like you're doing the 'scissor swing' rather than the 'Big-Step', to mount.
Been trying to teach Snowie the Big-Step, 'cos she keeps hopping in, grumbling she's stubber her toe on the top-box again Laughing
Basically, stand next to near-side of bike; facing over the saddle, left hand on handlebar. Bend right leg at knee to stand on one foot; and keeping right leg bent, twist and 'step' over the saddle; unfolding right leg after you have cleared the back of the bike.
Useful little technique, especially if you have a top-box.
If you are more supple, and can tuck leg right up and mount over the tank, you can even get a pillion seated comfortably before you get on, so that they dont pull you over or strangle you with your jacket 'scrambling', behind you.

Tef, my knees are buggered from falling off skateboards too often as a kid, you can inspect my mounting/dismounting technique tomorrow evening when I bring you a couple of bottles of homebrew!

Had an interesting night at Bassett's Pole last night.
met the previous owner to the bloke I bought it off.
he was saying that when he sold it the bloke I bought it off saw him and started saying it was a lemon as it kept overheating.

told him when I got it I noticed the expansion tank was empty.

then the bloke who I bought it off turned up.
he asked me if it was still overheating, so I said "Not since I filled the expansion tank."
to which he replied "What F***ing Expansion tank?"
Laughing

onto the general tart up now.

moved the indicators so they're like this now:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/94acd217-8d7f-4c17-a299-5a953f1e304d_zpsdebd1efc.jpg

much better now, smaller indicators and out of the way too.

Now to turn to the panels, one of them has had a lug broken off so that needs replacing.
Mixed up some P40 filler, the one with the fibreglass in it, roughed up the panel for a bit of extra grip and stuck a bolt in the filler:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1338_zps31e51046.jpg

then I used some quiksteel to make a sort of peg shape:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1339_zps29f62c63.jpg

(admittedly it looks like an Easter island statue here)
left it to cure and sanded it to shape it a bit:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1340_zps3d1cd0db.jpg

then tried it on the bike!

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1341_zpsfcccb963.jpg

needs a bit of fettling but it's pretty much there. Smile

oh, I also found a much better use for the crappy nylon tyre that used to be on the front of my old 125! Smile

Mrs Phrealey (pending) has bought me an early birthday present! Cool

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1351_zps86771c71.jpg

we thought she bought 1 carb, but they sent 2.

So Efes123 if you need any carb bits I may have some spares... Laughing

Project tart up is on hold...
Sad
it has turned into Project fix the bastard thing!

about 2 weeks ago me and Mrs phrealy (pending) had gone out for a sunday afternoon bimble, we were heading down the M42 to her parents house, and as I was trying to overtake an artic I lost all power from the bike.
while I was looking to work out why I saw some light blue smoke behind me.
"That's odd?" i thought, "I wonder where that's coming from?"
realised it was from my exhaust... Mad
so as we stopped on the hard shoulder of the M42 I realised what had gone. the front head gasket.
cue me pushing the bike for 2 miles on a lovely sunny afternoon.
started hunting for bits soon after!

so strip down starts again, Drained the oil and there wasn't 3 litres left in it.
drained the water, it should have about 2 pints of water, and when I drained that out, well... I've had bigger doubles measures in pubs!
first new quirk for me is finding extra spark plugs. turns out the head had 2 plugs per cylinder for reduced emissions and more POWAH! you can see the HT lead for the other plug here:

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1390_zps98b2ac5a.jpg

so off came the coils and the cam cover and then I was reminded that V twins have cam chains...

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1393_zpsb3ca350e.jpg

bugger! that has made the job harder.

had the fun of removing this timing cover...

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1398_zps941d6428.jpg

in the end a big screwdriver and a hammer worked, i tapped it round!

got the camshaft guides off

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1407_zpseb12c3ae.jpg

and I found that I can turn the engine round by hand so it didn't seize the engine (thank fook!) however I left my laptop with the PDF of the manual at mine so I stopped there because I didn't want to guess what timing mark was TDC.
got a replacement gasket, but why did Honda insist on using silly bolt sizes? all the bolts in the head are 12 or 14mm and not the 13 and 15 i was expecting.

this coffee Mrs Phrealey made would have been a lovely one too had my size 12 feet not got in the way.

https://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y475/i_p_phrealy/DSC_1408_zps74d21120.jpg

so Tuesday night I'll be in the inlaws garage, fixing my bike whilst listening to bikes hooning up the Coleshill bypass on the way to Bassetts Pole, and I won't be jealous, honest Crying or Very sad

See my earlier post in this thread, sounds like yours is going the same way as mine did! We were lazy and didn't really care so just kept topping everything up, my mate toured France on it and ended up filling it with some really thick tractor oil, that didn't seem to disappear as quick lol. The bike still never died been sold on now, should think its still going!

aye, STONEY! but at least now I know the overheating/water use was the head gasket, and an OEM one is going in. it's done 55k now, and these bikes had a fairly hard life so i'm not surprised it needs some work now.
Efes123, cheers for the offer, and if you need any carb parts give me a shout.
trevor saxe-coburg-gotha, the dartboard looks like that due to it sitting in a shed for 10 years as my cow of an ex wife never wanted it in the house.
