Don't ask me why I started looking at this style of bike or why even started bidding but just fancied something to strip down and rebuild as something to do.

I still have no idea as to the final result I'm after and to the extent that I'm willing to go for a bike that is yet to be tested or even aware of anything on it actually works, but it's all a learning curve right?

So after splashing £200 for a local bike that had sat for 16 years in a garage and never seen in the flesh and little information I was the winning bidder. The. seller even offered to deliver it to me at no charge. How nice is that?

A bike for the whole family

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/29/bikepics-2655268-full.jpg

So far the bike has gone from a complete bike to a pile of parts in the garden, slowly getting cleaned and inspected before hopefully a strip / paint / powder coat and rebuild.

First up in no particular order the engine, a full automatic 50cc beast.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/29/bikepics-2655292-full.jpg

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/29/bikepics-2655297-full.jpg

I have no real intention of running the bike with this engine but am keen to see if it works, plus gives me chance to swap heads and pistons if needed as similar engine set ups for the monkey and of course rather experiment on this than my road going bike.

Was a little dirty.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/30/bikepics-2655673-full.jpg

After some gunk and a little brushing started to look better.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/30/bikepics-2655705-full.jpg

Managed to buff it up a little more after having a go with the steam cleaner as well. Only thing as now taken the head off oil has got under the fly wheel and need to remove this before putting it back together again.

Head off:

Valves looking a little charred

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/31/bikepics-2655986-full.jpg

Diddly looking 50cc piston

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/31/bikepics-2655989-full.jpg

Have been informed that the full auto came in a 72cc version as well so might look at getting a large bore kit for it as not sure if this will be down on compression as slight vertical marks on the barrel and piston. As I've said it was a non runner so no idea if the engine was the reason for it to be shoved away for all those years?

Engine still needs some cleaning and scrubbing, I want to paint the casings, barrel and head before rebuilding. Pain in the ass at the moment is removing the old gaskets!

The fuel tank is well and truly filled with shit and funky smelling fuel. I have yet to even muster the motivation to empty and sort this out but did tackle the diddly carb, stripped and cleaned the crap from the jets and float bowl.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/29/bikepics-2655455-full.jpg

All I can describe is that it looked like filter coffee had been dumped into the filter and bowl?

Front wheel, 17 x 2.25 of 'grip'

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/29/bikepics-2655299-full.jpg

The tyres were well past the use by date and cracked along the rims when pushed and even managed to remove them using a bicycle set of levers.

Laughing

In quite a good state actually, and all spokes removed with just a whiff is wd40 on the nipples.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/09/bikepics-2658959-full.jpg

Apart from some 32 years with of patina the wheel cleaned up nice with some wire wool and a little rubbing.

Front brake assembly:

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/09/bikepics-2658961-full.jpg

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/09/bikepics-2658960-full.jpg

Note the internal speedo drive, this was covered in very clean and very yellow grease, the shoes and drums were in great nick as are the bearings so hopefully just replace shoes and a few ancillary washers and they're ready for paint / powder coat as are the rim.

Front suspension is different to most modern bikes but a cool little set up none the less. How effective it is as opposed to just being a pogo like front end is another matter.

Front end removed and shocks dropped out, one was free the other took a more shear brute force and ignorance approach.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/12/bikepics-2659455-full.jpg

One complete and one split. I have a repair kit arriving that will replace the worn bushes and fabric washers that protect them as well as a new bolt with grease nipple.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/12/bikepics-2659453-full.jpg

Again a little paint to the exposed to prevent further rust and these will be ready for reassembly.

Here you can see one of the grease nipple holes that lives the centre bearing on the lower fork mount.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/12/bikepics-2659454-full.jpg

Will be taking the front end and rear swingarm to be blasted and before powder coating.

Rear is by far where the most attention is needed, not just in the body work but also the wheel. Not only did the rear brake seize when mucking about with it in the house thanks to a mangled washer on the cam lever but I also had to cut the rear parking brake cable to remove the wheel (this part is no longer available or made anymore!).

The rear wheel is also by far rustler than the front and had to use the angle grinder to remove the spokes.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/03/29/bikepics-2655301-full.jpg

This wheel will be shot blasted I'm sure as can't be bothered trying to rub this down before powder coating.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/10/bikepics-2659123-full.jpg

After using some grips, a hammer and some lube I finally managed to remove the seized cam and inspected the assembly. The hardest part was trying to remove the rear sprocket. For a simple bike it's very well engineered.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/12/bikepics-2659452-full.jpg

Again like the front, only needs a new set of shoes and washers and ready for blasting and coating.

Nice wee bike that for 200 quid!

I picked up a couple of Z50s a few weeks ago one has a C90 engine in it and the other has the original Z engine..dunno what the difference is but the parts prices are hilarious Laughing

How much do you anticipate spending on shotblasting and powder coating?

Front forks and swingarm.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/04/12/bikepics-2659456-full.jpg

Not too much rust on the frame, small amount on the down tube above engine.

I like stepthroughs. I also like cubs. Don't want to rub nything in,but I picked up a C70 for £50 non-runner from round the corner, changed the fuel and set the points then took it for MOT and it sailed through, 130MPG, 120MPG flat out everywhere. Taught me how to ride in a field.

Always fancied stripping and re-painting everything and building up again.

I won't tell you how long it took me yesterday and last night NOT to complete the first wheel but it became frustrating to say the least. No idea as to what the problem was as far as can see same as today but worked virtually first time? Oh well!

So spokes, one at 90 degrees and one less bent. The 90 degree bend goes on the outside of the rim (pushed in from the bottom of the hub) and the less bent one on the inside of the rim (dropped in from the top).

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670267-full.jpg

The wheel is a 38 hole (4 hole pattern) and pretty much get the first few right and it's self explanatory. The holes in the rim are angled upwards and downwards and just need to line the angle of the spokes with the corresponding holes and count to the next available one.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670268-full.jpg

Here all the inside spokes on the bottom of the hub in and secured loosely in the corresponding holes. No idea as to why I odd the bottom first as wasn't planned?

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670269-full.jpg

The next inside bent spokes were dropped in and are secured in the opposite direction as to the ones already in place.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670271-full.jpg

A look at the rim and can see that the angle of the holes in the rim and the angle of the spokes lines up and matches. Also note the crossing over of the spokes.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670270-full.jpg

Now comes the outside spokes, remember these are the 90 degree bent ones and pushed upwards into the hub. No real reason as to why I flipped the wheel at this point but you can see that all spokes have been inserted and either hanging loose or secured.

Again the new spokes to be secured are crossed in the opposite direction tho those already on the side you're doing. So for this side that's in the pic, the initial inside spokes were to the left and the new outer spokes are crossed to the right.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670272-full.jpg

By this point as long as your crossing the spokes in the correct direction the holes in the rim will line up nicely, if not then it's going the wrong way.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670273-full.jpg

Flip the wheel over (or work from underneath as I did as the wheel is balanced) and again cross the last row of outer spokes in the opposite direction to the inner ones and all done.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670274-full.jpg

Front and rear all done.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2014/05/22/bikepics-2670275-full.jpg

Was going to get the powder coated first but good job as didn't as would have been scratched up beyond belief!

Whether I can be bothered to true these as well or take them to a specialist is a dead on cert for spending some cash on peace of mind knowing that they're secure and round.

Slow going at the moment for various reasons!

Only really need a few new parts to get this moving along a little the biggest ones being the new panels for the body. I'm still waiting for the v5 to come back before doing too much to the frame. Not going to splash out only to find that it's been nicked or written off, so far so good.

I was hoping to get the head back on the engine buts managed to break the oil ring so need to order a new set.

Still having a mental argument over just getting it back on the road and doing it right in my mind. I know that if it's rushed and not as I wanted then ill only regret it later.

Got the v5 through and only 3rd keeper from new, first keeper only had it 18 months. Let's hope the last keeper looked after it in all that time?

Engine back together with new gaskets me piston oil rings.
