Been wanting a little two stroke for ages, and on Saturday I bought this:

https://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/monteme0/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsbd688fe6.jpg

Took the above photo today during a quick blast around the country roads during my lunch break. Absolutely loving this bike so far; very surprised how fast it feels (had 70 out of it on the way home today - albeit down a hill, but it felt like it would go faster).

I have 2 mods in mind for it at the moment. I'm considering a set of Ace bars as I've seen pictures of a few on here with them on and think they look great. As well as this I will likely be attempting the 12v conversion at some point as I will be doing night riding along crappy country roads so do need something decent.

Also, I am aware that these bike are not exactly renowned for their excellent braking; however, the front brake is a joke. It does literally nothing whereas the rear is actually ok (in comparison). I expect the brake shoes are just very worn and in need of replacement (although I am yet to take a look). Can anyone recommend some good shoes?

Other than the brakes and electrics though, I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase Very Happy

Looks really clean Thumbs Up the 12v mod I considered also but it is a bit of a fart on and I found I got good results with a new battery and using a different wattage bulb (can't remember what it was but it was an improvement over the original though it only lasted a month, I'll see if I can find the box and what it was).

On another note I just left the club on Saturday Sad

I will be using the bike for commuting most days and from what I gather, the expansion pipes increase engine wear and fuel consumption. I'm quite happy with the performance for now anyway so will leave it as it is Thumbs Up

I'm sure I saw someone on here (maybe in Duvet's thread?) tried this and it looked pretty rubbish. I can't imagine I will be changing the bars over just yet anyway - more interested in getting the electrics and brakes working properly first!

Do you mean the 12v conversion is a bit of a faff or it's not that good once it's done? The battery and different bulb may be something I try first actually as that would be less work. I am just a little worried about the availability of bulbs etc for the 6v system (will have to look into this).

Oh right, was just wondering then if you were the guy I bought it off but after looking at your location (and current bike) it would appear not.

Well I got the bulb from Wemoto but I can't remember what it was (30/35 W at a guess), wasn't too pricey and it was an improvement over the original by far but short lifespan luckily they're cheap and it is easy to replace the bulbs on the RXS.

No not mine, less rust, no tears in seat and also mine had the Yamaha fork brace thing.

Where have all these shiny RXS100s been hiding? I seem to be the only person on the road with a really rough looking one Confused

You used to be able to get soft compound brake shoes (think they were for one or other elderly MZ model but they fitted the RXS). Braking was relatively outstanding with these but they only lasted about 1500 miles. Roughening the surface of the shoes and making sure the drum isn't scored usually results in OKish braking.

12v conversion isn't worth the hassle, IMHO. 45w 6v halogen bulb will give you enough headlight power not to hit anything in the dark. But sourcing these bulbs has become quite tricky now.

Always stick with the original pipe. And be happy if you've got one that hasn't rusted through in about seven different places Laughing

Thanks for the info. I'll try sanding the shoes down when I have time and will check the drum Thumbs Up (don't really fancy changing the shoes every 1500 miles).

Something I was wondering about was the 2t oil consumption. The sight glass was showing nearly empty so I topped it up to the top of the sight glass (although this is not anywhere near the top of the tank) which took about 1/4 to 1/3 of my 1L bottle and the sight glass is now showing half full after only about 50 miles. I read on the yammy 100 forums that someone is getting about 400 miles to a tank of oil (although I don't know if this is just filling it to the top of the sight glass or literally filling the tank).

So I just wondering if my bike is using a little too much oil? If so Then I hope it's just a case of adjusting the pump setting.

I tend to get about 400-500 miles per litre of 2T oil. Had forgotten there even was a sight glass - must be 20-odd years since I last looked at mine. I usually wait about 50 miles after the red light first flashes before replenishing my tank. Normally get about 700-800ml in at that point.

But be aware that some gauges are set higher than others - I knew someone whose oil light used to flash when he was down to almost nothing in the tank. Best idea is to remove left panel and visually check how much is in the tank now and then, topping up to the neck as necessary.

This is good to know, it would seem as though the oil consumption isn't so bad then.

I will do as you suggest and just look at the tank rather than the sight glass. I don't actually know if my oil light works to be honest, it doesn't come on when I switch on the ignition like it does on my 500. But then again I think that may be down to the battery being in need of a charge.

This will likely be a very stupid question, but... I removed the seat the other day in hope of removing the battery to charge it and I couldn't see how you actually remove the wires from the positive terminal as it's all encased in the battery. Massive noob question I'm sure but it confused me so I put the seat back on and thought "a job for another day." But I really do need to charge the battery now.

On my bike, I have to remove the fuel tank to disconnect the earth wire because its attached by the regulator. The proper position is somewhere on the side of the frame - which gets all the road shit over it and leads to issues. Or that was the case for me.

The positive wire should just be connected normally to the loom unless someone has had a bodge under there. Or you can disconnect it at the fuse case.

These tiny batteries need topping up regularly, especially if you do a bit of mileage. I tend to check my water level every time I put more two stroke oil in. If the level drops much below the minimum mark, the battery will soon die.

Only ever use Yuasa batteries. Wemoto does them at a sensible price. Everywhere else tends to take the piss. Think I paid £8 something with acid for my last one.

Aye de glaze the brake shoes if they need it...clean out all the dust from the drum, check the steel liner in the drum and deglaze as well. Take the cam out and clean any crap off it and regrease... Fit new pads if needed and finally look at luring or fitting a new brake cable if the original casing goes spongy....fit an oem one rather than cheap aftermarket/we moto one tho!
