Those big nuts would be easier to deal with if you held the ratchet at the end and got proper leverage instead of using only half of the lever Thumbs Up

Go full bodge mode on it... drill a hole in it and inject the grease using a syringe. Then tap some threads in the hole and seal it with a small grub screw and some loctite Thinking

P.S this is probably a stupid idea.

why would you strip a brand new UJ?

it will be grease packed from the factory.

Yeah, this. Why are you taking it apart at all?

Unless I've missed something and this is a used UJ and not a new one.

but still, if theres no noticeable play or roughness, why go to the trouble of stripping if your not going to replace the rollers or cups?

It's probably a reasonable precaution given the amount of damage the old one did when it failed.

FWIW at lunchtime I was at MT Motorcycles* near Doncaster. They're bike breakers. I was picking up a bit for the lad's bike.

I happened to see at least a couple of boxes on the rack marked up as Moto Guzzi bits. So if you're stuck for 2nd hand parts maybe give them a call. No guarantees they'll have it but if you don't ask you certainly don't get.

Best of luck with the rebuild.

HTH Thumbs Up

* don't go by website parts, I just generally give them a call (tel: 01302 391122) and ask. I've used them and found them reasonable for prices (others may disagree) but then I can just nip down the road to collect for cash. They are on eBay as well.

There's a lot of metal missing! And its a rather awkward shape, And it would play on my mind (i'm a worrier).

But, I have hit another Snag... but lets bring you up to date.

It was my week-end off, and I wanted to put the box back together. I've been waiting on a new out-put shaft seal... it arrived yesterday. that's why I was looking at the Universal Joint... which will have come from a bike at least as old as mine, and if it went 'dry' in mine making it seize and smash everything, I want to make sure this one wont do the same.

Breaking Tef's clamps though, has halted that until I get a vice.

So, I made the gaskets for the box.

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_3994_zps359d7643.jpg
Nice fresh new gasket paper, and a sharp craft knife, and....
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_3998_zpsf2375cf7.jpg
Then shortly after that...
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_4002_zpsb96aeeda.jpg

Fitted the new seal to the new casing.

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_3989_zps82f105cb.jpg

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_3992_zps37ab3f47.jpg

Time to get the box back together!

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_4008_zpsed88693a.jpg

Lining up all the shafts....you have to put them all in at the same time

But for some reason, it doesn't seem to want to line up properly."TEF"

Twenty minutes of swearing later, I found out why!

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_4016_zps8710d31a.jpg
New Casing, input-shaft end bearing diameter...... 41.9mm

https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Strada%20Stripdown/DSC_4017_zps0591da5d.jpg
Old Casing, input shaft end bearing diameter....... 39.9mm

SO, Stumped AGAIN!

Have emailed Gutsibits for either a bigger bearing or different case

And it was going Oh So well Rolling Eyes

You have made sure that every other casing measurement compares favourably , haven't you?

If it's just the bearing that's different, get in touch with a pattern bearing supplier and see if they can sell you something to match what you need.

This. Given they both use the same diameter shaft its just a change in bearing.

I would of been interested in just using a bigger bearing, would it not of been better for overall maintenance/life cycle? Or am I thinking a bigger bearing will last longer incorrectly?
