Hi,

I have basically raced motocross for the past 10 years and fancy giving road bikes/track days a go. I have read the FAQ section which was very informative, but just have a few questions. I am looking at taking my full bike test next month and then doing a few track days to push the bike in a safe environment.

- I have seen a yzf r6 which is advertised as daytime mot only. This would be ideal for track days as will save time covering the lights etc. However, do you need indicators for a daytime MOT?

- I have always been put off track days by people saying they cost a fortune. Motocross isnt cheap, but you can get by. I just want to start out doing it for fun and the obvious question is the tyres. Do you really need slick/wet tyres? Or would general road tyres be suitable?

- Also what other costs are involved that i might not know about?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Daytime MOT's are a bit of a grey area. There is really no such thing as a daytime MOT, rather an MOT where they don't test the lights as they aren't fitted. There seems to be some confusion. Some sources say you need a brake light, some say you don't need anything at all.

If the bike has a daytime MOT as it stands then I should think it's OK. I don't think you need indicators for a daytime MOT but I think you'd be crazy to ride on the road without them.

You don't need slicks for trackdays, and something sporty but road legal like a Pirelli Supercorsa would be fine. The trackdays themselves don't cost too much, and tyres should last three or more trackdays. The main issue is transporting the bike such as van, diesel etc. I personally would never ride to a trackday unless it was very nearby because of the concern about getting home if you have a crash.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

You need a speedo, horn and number plate.

That is all. I'm about to MOT my track bike which will have just that.

From what my CBT instructor advised, and correct me if I've been misinformed, motorbikes don't need to have indicators fitted. BUT if they are fitted they must work properly.

So if you have them but don't want to run them just remove them and block the hole.

Shared a garage Donnington earlier this year with a lad that had raced MX for years, then started doing track days. He was on his fourth and solidly near the front of fast.

Having tried both trackdays and MX, I can solidly state that MX takes WAY bigger balls!

I am kind of the flip side of burnleyian (i.e. many years of track then migrated to MX) I found MX so very scary! Pale

Therefore I would bet anyone that is good at MX will find being fast on track no problem at all.
