Hi all iv just recently purchased a beautiful vintage 1956 Phillips gadabout..it has not been used since 1965 and was tucked up at the back of a shed.

https://i1335.photobucket.com/albums/w678/Tweenies112/D6F8D87F-5339-4C41-AE5B-37FDF6ECDD09_zps8nfodgnr.jpg

It's all complete and original and is a restoration project I shall be doing over the coming future.

https://i1335.photobucket.com/albums/w678/Tweenies112/06BFFA53-8D36-4BB1-B4D7-F57844AFF0A3_zpsm4m7gkfp.jpg

Is there anyone on this forum that could shed some light on more information on this moped..ideally i would like some sort of repair manual like a Haynes etc etc but I would be grateful of any info if possible.

I know its a 49cc manual clutch with a 2 speed hand shift..that's about it.

Cheers

Love the Flash Gordon styling on the mudguards.

Lovely and unmolested, careful not to over-restore it

I'll take a guess it's a 2-stroke pre-mix. Feel free to correct me on that.

A good find and an interesting bike, complete with pedals.
I imagine the old Tomos mopeds that were sold in Woolworths were of the same design.

Reminds me of the quaint old machinery you get at Barton Bike Night.

Best of luck, watching with interest Thumbs Up

Totally agree,
I know it`s a restoration but do as little as possible to make it run and be safe.

Don't restore it, get it running and ride it like that!

dont restore, its taken almost 60 years to get that patina,
rebuild the engine, replace cables, bearings, tyres etc, but dont touch the metal work at all,
youd make it worth less than the paint if you did

Dunno what you paid for it but if you're into moving it on there's a thriving moped market these days so it's got to be worth quite a bit, especially unrestored.

ps are those O/E waterproofs roped to the carrier ?.

Wow love the color, personally I'd just check consumables and then repaint the engine or clean it up.

Iv restored the moped with a few changes...iv resprayed it in British racing green. Iv also been having a play with differant carburetors I'm using a 15mm bing style carb but it's proving difficult in getting it to run right

The first two-wheeled powered device I owned as a 1959 Phillips Panda PLUS (it had basic tele forks that refused to move) that was even cruder than the Gadabout, by comparison this thing was relative luxury !.

Did you have the engine apart ? Presumably there would be cc seals to be replaced ..

Those bing clones are notoriously hard to tune, due to the fact that they apparently come with the wrong atomizer fitted. You would have been better off buying a second hand original Bing 14, they are easy to tune and decent quality.
