My brother wrote off his GSXR 600 K5 on a road he knows relatively well. He's had the bike for quite a few years and has done one Europe tour and three visits to France on it and clocked up quite a few miles on his little Gixxer, so he was comfortable and knew his bike pretty well.

Only protective gear he was wearing was his boots, gloves and helmet. Other than that he was wearing jeans, a t-shirt and a light hoodie on (all shredded to pieces). Just goes to show, no matter how well you think you know your bike or a road and how confident you are on it, there's always a chance of you fucking up so be prepared not cocky.

He came off while in triple figures, was lucky to walk away tbh. He's got a broken finger and some pretty bad road rash. Most of the road rash is on his arms and stomach.

Pictures of the bike before and after:
(crash images coming tomorrow, when we go to pick up the bike)

Hope he's learnt his lesson about proper kit.

Good job he was wearing boots and gloves though, could have been some very nasty foot/ankle/leg injuries at those speeds, and could have permanently lost all useful function in his hands.

I fucking love reading about those people who think they're too pro for gear, it makes me laugh.

I hope it hurts for a loooong time, idiot.

To quote Forrest Gump " Stupid is as Stupid does!"

Glad to see your bro came out the other side, rather than coming out "the other side".

Oh, thank you very much for making Tef's point about modern supersport 600s. Mad

Those are very light injuries for that off - I take it that he did a lot of sliding and not much impacting?

Anyway, I'm glad that he walked away. Thumbs Up

Me too. Very surprised, but glad. EDIT Shame about the bike, have always liked the Rizla colours for some reason.

OP - do you think he'll wear leathers in future or will he rationalise it in some way?

So he was doing triple figures in no gear, except boots and gloves. I say it's his own fault.

Heck, I did this at 30-40MPH without bike trousers... Would I do it again? Hell no. I couldn't walk properly on the leg for about two weeks every time I took a step or straightened it the skin would rip and sting. If it wasn't on the inside of my knee cap I would have sucked it up and been fine. Had to wear shorts for a month until the scab went as well. Sprayed in anti-septic spray daily as well and showering with cling film on my leg.

Although I ain't one to moan at bikers who don't wear gear, their body leave them to it, although me myself will wear full gear even if I was riding a 50CC fagped (highly unlikely)... Thumbs Up

I'm not too "Pro" for bike gear, I just don't want to wear it. I'm fully aware of the consequences of coming off without it, I just don't give a fuck.

So that will be another £xxx, xxx worth of medical care, pissed up a wall because he just doesn't care...

Yeah its cool to 'not giv'a fuk' however when your antics go wrong its everyone else that stumps up the money to put you back together.

Would you give a fuck if you had to stump up the medical expenses?

*sighs*

Strayed a bit off topic there!

3 figures without much gear.
Luck to still have an arm Rolling Eyes

Jesus. This is exactly the reason I want proper leathers when I jump on my Thunderace with a view to jumping on the motorway or doing any route with serious twisties on it. I wouldn't dream of topping a ton with anything less then textiles with full padding and even then I don't think I'd want to.

It's got nothing to do with being "cool." I'm old enough to make my own decisions, and be responsible for myself. Again, I am fully aware of the risks involved with riding, with or without gear.

Gear doesn't prevent you going to hospital in the event of an accident, and is not the defining factor on whether or not you walk away from an accident or not. If we're going down the "pay your own medical bills" the majority of people would not be riding, period.

I've come off my bike a few times, I've had a broken foot through an accident, my boots didn't protect me. All have been relatively minor, and the reason for that is my own sense of self-awareness. I don't ride at triple figures, I'm not a boy racer at all.

Me not being "responsible" not wearing full gear all the time is no more an issue than the binge drinkers, or smokers, or obese people that are going to cost the NHS at some point in their life.

Heavy Drinker - Check
Smoker - Check
Obese - Check
Not a Full Gear Wearer - Check
Ride like a Nob - Check

Ok BCF I get the hint I'm off to 2WTT

Regardless of what gear you chose to wear, learning skillz that'll help you not crash are more important than having full leathers etc etc.

I'm sure its pretty painful but at triple figures in a t-shirt I'd have expected his arm to be ground down to the bone.

Should have worn a long sleeved t-shirt and only done 80mph and he'd have been fine.

He'll defo' be wearing leathers in the future (that's if he even gets back on a bike, his wife isn't too happy). He does normally wear leathers but he just thought that he was only nipping out for half an hour and it was a road he knew really well so just thought he'd quickly pop up for a little ride then come home.
