Details now on page 2

During the recent Euro trip a few of us expressed an interest in seeing some d day landing spots.

It would just be a few days to go see some of the landing spots and visit some of the museums.

https://www.normandie-tourisme.fr/cultural-heritage/~~~~battle-of-normandy~~~~/offres-6-2.html

Most of the locations are within an hour and a half from Caen so I would be proposing that we stay near there, the HotelF1 has been the euro trip hotel of choice and for me at least, this would be ideal.
https://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-2235-formule-1-hotelf1-caen-est-mondeville/index.shtml
At £30.00 a night you get a clean bed and room with access to showers and toilets and around 4 euros a day gets you an all right breakfast.
To make it even cheaper you can fit up to 3 people per room.

Getting there is up to you, having run a couple of quotes the ferry looks like the best option to me.
Ferry from Portsmouth (5hrs) - £150 - 20 min ride to hotel
Train from Folkstone (40mins) - £70 - 4 hour ride
The money you save on the train you use in fuel getting down there, having done a few big mileage days in euroland I would prefer to ferry as a 4 hour ride will likely take a bit longer, though if you would rather ride you are welcome to.

Once there, as mentioned before, everything is pretty close at hand the longest distance being to Cherbourg, where there is a small museum. Motorway use will most likely be minimal so no restrictions on what bike to bring will be made.

Trip would be 5 days, you're welcome to stay longer or less time if you would prefer.

Dates I'm thinking of are mid August, I have holiday booked for the week of the 18th so would ideally like to do it then though I could potentially be flexible with that if the majority would prefer different dates.

The plan for me would be to catch the ferry from Portsmouth on the Monday and return on the Friday, allowing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to see as much as we can.

Total cost of trip would be Ferry - £280
Train - £190 (+ 210 miles worth of fuel)
(of course by sharing rooms that can go down)

Then just a few tanks of fuel, your food and the price of museums and tours.

18th-22nd August.

Anybody interested?

Yep definitely interested.

I still have a eurotunnel ticket left over from the euro jolly to use, so would probably do that, unless everyone else goes ferry, then I would join you.

As mentioned - definate for me Thumbs Up

At least a few others off Eurotrip are near definates I think too Smile

Will have to look into fuel costs to decide ferry Vs tunnel. Will be looking to roomshare again too so if Troy can't stand anymore nights with me again, anyone else is welcome Laughing

Defo. Ferry is a nice cruise and much closer for me almost 100 miles closer than the tunnel so fuel would almost cancel out the saving.
I have done 3 week long tours of the battle fields and landing beaches and learnt something new each time

Just had a nosy at this, tunnel, if you go out on monday, back friday, it's about £56 return, come back on saturday and its closer to £100.

Obviously then you have 220 miles each way from calais to caen to think about but would still be a saving over the Brittany ferry..

The way i'd go is newhaven to dieppe on dfds ferry for £78 return and ride 110 miles to caen, much savings.

You can either go sunday night to get there 4 am or go 10am monday to get there 3pm.

Dfds overnight is a good crossing and one I've done a few times gets you into France in time for a full day out. That or Portsmouth Cherbourg but could be more money .

I have booked the time off work but nothing else. To be honest, I am having second thoughts due to the amount of other stuff I have planned and the very small amount of Annual Leave I will have left for the rest of the year.

Will make a decision soon though.

Cheers Marm.

Depending on when/if noobriders passport turns up there will be 3 definites(myself, noob rider, my brother) + 2 more potentially from outside the forum.

Jim still fancy it?

Combining the 2 trips would be fine for me, give more time for passports to turn up. Just need to rearrange holiday time off.

Would anyone who is already interested have a problem with moving the dates to the 1st of September then riding up to meet the weekend lot?

That would be monday 1st-sunday 7th then if i've got my dates right?

That should be fine for me - and to be honest would be better really. Saves buying two fares to get us over the water and back, plus saves a bit of petrol to-and-from on the UK side.

I've already booked my tunnel for the mini-jolly, not sure if its adjustable like the last one was. If not I guess I could potentially hand it one of the others only going for the weekend dates.

Correctomondo, 1st to 7th. Thumbs Up

Ferry from Poole to Cherbourg on the Monday is £54, could be cheaper ones out there if anybody fancies looking.
https://i1156.photobucket.com/albums/p569/Ambitions0farider/ScreenHunter_092_zpse7b09c93.jpg

We can then either stay in Cherbourg or go down to Caen or Saint Lo (either have an F1) till Friday where we go North to join the others at their hotel in Boulogne sur Mer.

Saint Lo F1 looks like £109 for the 4 nights

Then catch eurotunnel home? For £40 seems the best choice.

Sounds good - ferry from poole would be nice and easy Laughing. Would spend more including petrol to get out there by tunnel anyway.

I'll have a check what i can do with my original return tunnel booking Thumbs Up
