PostPosted: 20:28 - 19 Jun 2014    Post subject: WR125R/X Valve adjustment? Reply with quote

So, my bike has done just under 5k miles, and i dont think the valve clearances have ever been done, anyone personally done them on a WR/R125? Please reply if you know of a guide or how easy it is?

i know you remove valve cover, and slacken the 8mm lock nuts on each rocker, then adjust the square adjuster nuts, but does the engine need to be in a certain place?

TDC/BDC?

anyone know?

Thanks

Karma Thumbs Up

yeah makes sense cheers!

i think its a 4 valve though?

valve clearances are 0.10 for intake 0.20 for exhaust, so do i set the engine to TDC, and how do i know if its on compression stroke?

take inspection covers off, leave spark plug in - it will come up to TDC relatively easily on exhaust stroke, on compression stroke it will feel much stiffer.

If you are still doubting, remove spark plug, put your thumb over the hole and have some one else turn the engine for you, you will feel the air being pushed up at your thumb and try and pop it off the spark plug hole. This is compression.
Only crank engine towards front of bike, never try to turn it backwards because you just missed TDC, go back round again

Why are you doing valve clearances on a 5000 mile old 125cc 15bhp engine? I sold mine at 7k miles with only basic service history

Sounds a little bit tappy and dont think its ever been done, rather keep on top of things with a relatively new engine changing oil every 1k miles 1 litre of putoline 10/40 and an oil filter costs 15 pounds, not alot for the peace of mind

You'll have to take the fuel tanks off and quite frankly the rocker cover bolts are an arse to get to on the one side.

As mentioned, adjust when cold and at tdc. There is a line behind the inspection cover that you can align with another line on the casing.

Other than that it's easy Thumbs Up

Have a look on yamahar125.com Its the same engine as the YZF-R125 and there's a service manual for it somewhere on that site.

Mine was ticky, turned out to be a exhaust gasket.

pretty sure its not an exhaust gasket had that issue on another bike before! would valve clearances cause a slight reduction in power/response?

Still seems to easily out accelerate my friends WR125X, same year bike, similar mileage.

are the sprockets different on them?

The gearing is different between the YZF/WRR/WRX and the WR/WRX yes.

Check your valves to be on the safe side but I doubt they are out of spec..
