I'm pretty happy with the colour, hard to get it to show properly in artificial light but will get proper pics when I've demasked them and got them out in daylight

Thanks for comments Thumbs Up

The wheels are not as mint as they look in the pictures, theres the odd dog hair and a few imperfections where I'd lost patience with the prepping so not like brand new but I'm happy enough with them. They were in a seriously bad way with a lot of corrosion and pitting and are over 15 year old moped wheels at the end of the day so am happy enough with them.

The colour (titanium grey), now I've looked at it properly, I'm not as happy with to be honest. It's a nice colour and am sure will look fine back on the bike but it's not really what I wanted.
I mixed a 'one off' colour for the MR2 wheels many years ago which turned out really well (purely luck, didn't know what I was doing) and I wanted a similar colour for these wheels and also to do the frame of the Mito and a few other bits in. The titanium grey is similar but the mix I did had a lot more of a bronze pearl kind of effect to it which I really liked.

https://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e66/deepthinkeruk/wheel.jpg

I have a bit left of what I mixed but not enough to do anything significant with and as it was a one off experimental colour, I didn't keep any kind of formula for it to have more made up.

I think I'll use the titanium grey for the main colour on the RS2 and then maybe play around 'modifying' any I have left by mixing in a different colour.

Anyway, only had an hour free today so just got the wheels ready to go on, tyres reseated, discs and sprocket on etc then tomorrow should be seeing bike back on its wheels and venturing into the cave for the first time Very Happy Thumbs Up

I'm left with a huge dilemma here, of if I should jizz all over the Bike wheels or the car wheels? Laughing

You don't fancy painting some car wheels white by any chance do you? Wink

I'm also not sleeping very well trying to decide how you get British racing green as a rim tape effect for them so it matches my obsolete car paintwork?

Keep your jizz away from my wheels thanks Laughing

Not that the car wheels are here anymore anyway Crying or Very sad
Incidentally, when the guy came to buy the MR2 he wanted to knock £100 off the price as he was going to concours it and 'would have to source some original wheels' Evil or Very Mad
Cheeky fuck, they'd just had £600 of new rubber on them. I told him he could have £500 off and take it with no wheels!... which he didn't take me up on Neutral

I used to refurbish alloys for a living but it's not something I really take any pleasure in anymore to be honest despite having a long break from it.

If you want car wheels doing I'd highly recommend getting them powder coated rather than wet sprayed. You should always get a near perfect result and the finish is just so much more durable than a wet sprayed clear coat - particularly what you want with a colour like white which could soon start to look dull and crap.

I'd have got the bike wheels powder coated if I wasn't able to paint them myself and save the cash but they also generally don't get the same abuse as an average car wheel.

I had the wheels on my truck powder coated last year, can't tell you how much it pained me to pay someone to do them but was having them done in gloss black and needed that tough powder coat finish that I could never achieve with spraying them.

With regards to the green rim, I've never had to do one but it should be something most wheel refurbishers should be able to do for you. Depending on exactly what you want to achieve the rim can be first sprayed the green then rim / fine line tape over it, spray wheel white, remove tape then clear coat.

Bit of a mixed day today

With some trepedation I went out this morning to remove the cover on the bike for the first time in 4 months, was half expecting to see a pile of rust similar to what I started with Laughing
All generally still looks fine though, a little dusty etc but only real issue is the top nut I polished up has rusted but I should've expected that anyway as obviously polished through the chrome in places. Something I'll sort this week.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1035_zps5b1a4810.jpg

Only other thing was.... it would appear the bike cover has a hole in it Laughing

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1037_zpsc5e71d98.jpg

Conveniently, water is significantly easier to remove from a battery tray in its frozen state Very Happy Thumbs Up

Before getting wheels back on, first job was to get the rear shock back on - huge fail! Evil or Very Mad Embarassed Crying or Very sad
Totally butchered the freshly powder coated spring by wrestling it back on without spring compressors! No excuse for it, I've known for months I needed to buy some compressors but have always had something better to spend my money on! Evil or Very Mad
So they are next on the shopping list and the spring will have to come off again to be redone, I've just touched it in for now to stop it rusting Crying or Very sad

When I'd done swearing at myself I brought out the wheels to get them on

Wheel in daylight - take note of the fooked front disc!

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1036_zpse1c53f80.jpg

Was very unhappy about putting that disc back on but good news is I think I've finally sourced a brand new one - bad news is it's from a dutch supplier and they want £20 for postage alone but at least I've found one Thumbs Up

Anyway..... bike has wheels on! Very Happy

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1038_zps90335fe3.jpg

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1039_zps6a9b354a.jpg

The keen eyed amongst you will notice my battery wires are still in a cryogenic state Laughing

Seem to have misplaced a spacer for the front wheel somehow so it's only on in a temporary way until I find the missing spacer but other than that am really happy to see it with wheels on again - bit of a milestone for me really and will be so novel being able to work on it in the warmth and not relying on weather / daylight Thumbs Up

And so it has seen the inside of the cave for the fist time

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1040_zpseed74149.jpg

Block of ice finally fell off the wires once I'd got the heater on Laughing

Not had time to get much done on it tonight but have fitted the shiny new pegs and rear brake system.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1041_zps8573e4a1.jpg

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1042_zps211947ec.jpg

Tomorrow I shall mostly be trying to find the missing spacer for the front wheel so I can get the front brake built back up and get them bled.

I've changed my mind! There's no way this bike should ever end up in the hands of a 16yr old now that want's to ride and abuse it, it's too mint! Are you still planning on keeping the RS2 as well?

You'll have to put up with the old man's re-living his youth/sunday polisher abuse though like some KMX125 owners do! Wink

Oh and that was good advice about the car wheels, I forgot that you could powder coat and mask off parts of a wheel like you can with painting too. I'm definitely going for powder coat on my wheels, I'd have gone for gold, but all my stickers are white lol!

To be honest, I won't be keeping this one or the RS2 now I've got the Mito. Only realistically got room for one bike and just want to put all my efforts into the Mito as that will be a long term keeper - until I can afford a 916 anyway Laughing

I won't really be making a project of the RS2 now, will just get tidied and will have to sell it on as I'm now skint. Will use the RS1 as my daily runner until I find a sensible buyer for it or until the Mito is done at least. Despite putting some money and effort into it I'm not overly attached to it really, will be a tidy bike for what it is but theres a few things I really don't like about it - painted engine for one, theres just no way I'd have done that if I was doing it again now, I'd have stripped it properly and bead blasted it. So long as I get some use from it and see my money back it's all good though, theres very little I've not enjoyed doing on this project and it's been a good learning experience so time and money well spent Thumbs Up

I take back what I said in my last post! Me and this bike have not been getting along recently! Evil or Very Mad

Can't find the missing spacer for the front wheel anywhere and now not convinced I ever had it (that's the excuse I'm running with anyway), have wasted enough time looking for it so just going to have to order a new one. Sad

Decided I'd start sorting the lights out so fitted the rear light and cheapo indicators

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1047_zps25cc620f.jpg

Indicators work but are flashing too fast, pulled one apart to discover they've got crappy 5W bulbs fitted! Evil or Very Mad
Suppose I'll have to go down the load resistor route now so cheap indicators not working out too cheap! Rolling Eyes

The cracked rear light lens is an annoyance so figured while I'm this far in and already spent so much I might as well keep going - so have ordered a brand new one along with new front disc and wheel spacer from Holland.
This build is getting silly expensive!

While I was messing with the indicators I got the rest of the loom all plumbed in so I could test everything is working... I know everything will work just fine because I've been right through the loom already so this will just be a 5 minute job... Rolling Eyes

No dash lights whatsoever Confused

Most of the repairs I did to the loom were where it had been melted between the multiplug and dash so figure I've done something wrong somewhere.
Cut off all my heat shrink and double checked everything and I'm sure all is as it should be. Confused

Electrics and wiring are not my strong point so downloaded the wiring diagram and checked it over and over convinced there's something I've missed somewhere, but it's all right and everything should work! But I've not a single light on the dash, no neutral light, even the indicator light isn't flashing. Confused

I know all the dash bulbs are fine because I went through them when I repaired the loom and replaced a couple that were blown so it's out with the multimeter! Crying or Very sad

After much testing, throwing things around and swearing I discovered what I'd already figured - everything should work - but it doesn't! Evil or Very Mad

Test that I've got feed to each of the bulb holders and checked each bulb, they're all fine!!!

Can only be the contacts (yes, it's quite obvious now) so tried cleaning the contacts of the bulb holders and replacing bulbs, still nothing! Then 'for what its worth' tried fitting an led bulb I had lying around - and.... there was light! Shocked Tried it an a few others and it worked in each of them Neutral

So it turns out that ALL the contacts were bad! After a lot of fiddling around I managed to get the normal bulbs working but they are temperamental so just going to replace them all with the LED type that have a wider contact area and snug fit.

Just glad to have got to the bottom of it now though, I wouldn't have guessed for one minute that every single set of contacts was bad Neutral
So everything now working as it should and I can forget about the electrics for now other than deciding what to do about my 5W indicators.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1046_zps8125cd81.jpg

Other than that nightmare, I've just got the chain fitted

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1045_zps368d4b70.jpg

And went to fit the side stand but discovered this Shocked

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1051_zps23a38646.jpg

Am sure they're only a couple of quid to replace but like anything else at the moment, it gets cleaned and plated Laughing

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1048_zps47ffe715.jpg

Stand fitted

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1050_zps4c4f99ce.jpg

So while I'm waiting for my new bits to arrive, next logical step is to get the tank painted so I can refit it, get some fluids in the bike and have a go at pressing that red button Very Happy

Got the tank flatted down tonight and will hopefully get that sprayed in the next few days Thumbs Up

Bits have arrived!

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1052_zpsc1bc8c26.jpg

That was ridiculously quick! Shocked Especially coming from that there abroad! Laughing

All looks right so happy days and can get the front end built up properly now Thumbs Up

Interesting that the rear lens is the same as a TZR 125 and the front disc.... a Piaggio Liberty Neutral

Well, just when I was so close to getting this finished, life threw me a couple of unexpected turns and twists and I've had no time (or money) to spend a minute on this since my last update!

I did have a nice surprise the other day though.... the seats came back from being re-covered! Very Happy

I'd forgotten all about them! Left them with a mate of mine and, to be fair, did tell him there was no rush... but that was about 8 months ago Shocked Laughing

Anyway, here they are

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1128_zps9aeeyubj.jpg

Really happy with these! He's even put a replacement strap thingy across the rear one Very Happy

Although finances are still a struggle at the moment, getting these seats back has spurred me on to get back on with this!

Bit of an update as I've managed to make a bit of time to spend on this again.

Got the new front disc fitted and have now replaced front and rear pads with new ones.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1199_zpsp8epc6h7.jpg

Was having a nightmare trying to get the brakes bled through from dry so purchased this cheapo vacuum kit

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1204_zpsw2j8uiav.jpg

Had the front brake rock solid in minutes so well worth the money when I consider the time wasted messing around trying to do it manually!

Rear brake just wouldn't bleed up properly, then on inspection noticed master cylinder is weeping Sad Gonna have to order a rebuild kit for that which is an expense I could have done without Mad

Fitted the new rear lens and got rid of those crappy indicators for some with 12v bulbs! Almost identical to look at but these ones work properly Thumbs Up

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1200_zpscbhcbphk.jpg

Just painted the tank tonight, needs a flat and polish tomorrow but should be fine.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1202_zpsqapuoiog.jpg

Gave the end can a tidy up while I was at it, it was in a bit of a mangled state before

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1201_zpscnfcaowl.jpg

Also got the exhaust on as planning on giving this a run tomorrow when the tanks back on Very Happy

Was home late tonight so not had much time to spend on this but have given the tank a flat and buff and it's come up nice.
New filler cap and put it on the bike to see how it looks.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1205_zpsu9zmz53a.jpg

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1207_zps8kswo66r.jpg

I'm going to get some self adhesive neoprene to fill the 'cut out' section in front of the seat. I've never seen a tank for one of these with that piece still there but am pretty sure its just some neoprene foam.

Also put the end can on - it's crying out for an Arrow decal on it Laughing

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1206_zpsdrqewsrg.jpg

Was hoping to be able to start it up (or at least try) tonight but realised I'd used the last of my 2 stroke oil in the chainsaw so that idea went out the window Embarassed

I want to paint the tail fairing next so figured I'd put it on the bike and make sure everything fits etc first.

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1208_zpslvmjgd7p.jpg

Was looking okay until I went to fit the rear seat...

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1209_zps2ew7pix4.jpg

It don't fit! Evil or Very Mad

Had me puzzled for a while as it really looks like it should fit but it just sits on top of that lip. Eventually came to the conclusion that it's simply not the right seat for the bike Evil or Very Mad
Am guessing its from an Aprilia instead - odd though as the shape looks very close.

I've never tried fitting it before as I sent it off for retrim as soon as I got it and it came with a job lot of RS1 parts I bought so had no real reason to doubt it Neutral

Thoughts now are to cut off that lip on the fairing and see if I can make it fit, the lock is roughly in the right position so it may be possible. If not, or if it looks arse, I'm just going to fabricate a hump there and single seat it - next to no chance of getting a used rear seat for one of these now!

At least I've discovered it now and not after painting it - then I'd have been gutted!

Could it have been retrimed in such a way the fabric is interfering with the fit?

No, I did consider that initially as if there should be some recess there but on closer inspection it is blatantly the wrong seat Sad
Having a google of some images confirms this is definitely different from original.

Have gone out and removed the lip from the fairing (so I wasn't lay awake thinking about it Laughing ) and even doing that doesn't allow it to fit in place as there is plastic moulding on the front underside of seat that still interferes with the fairing - hard to explain. Will post better pics tomorrow but its obvious (now) some bits have been previously removed from the underside of seat - am guessing it did previously fit on an RS1 but one that had been modified to accept it.

I think it will fit with some more chopping, will have to modify the lock and make mounting lugs but looks like it should do - will see Neutral

Think I just about got away with this one Embarassed

This is the underside of the seat how it was - very obvious looking at it now that various bits have previously been hacked off it!

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1210_zpsuggifocn.jpg

Started off by 'adjusting' (crushing it in the vice) the height of the latch on the lock until was fitting snugly into the frame. Then made some crude brackets for it to slide under the tail fairing at the front and tapped a couple of holes in the seat to bolt them to. Not pretty but it's functional Very Happy

Fairing hacked away.

Seat now fits really nice and snug! It's not a perfect fit cosmetically but I can live with it, main thing is it's a good tight fit and is perfectly functional. I wasn't over keen on single seating it as the tail is a pig to remove and refit and I wanted to keep the convenient access to battery and fuse so bit of a relief on this one!

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1212_zpsqyccsaxu.jpg

Now it all works I'll make some proper brackets for the seat to tidy it up a bit but other than that it'll do! Disaster averted Laughing

Think it would have been more ingenious to have checked it fit in the first place before sending it off for retrim! Embarassed Laughing

Anyway, I got away with it very lightly really, I was lucky it only needed minor modification to fit.

The fit does look pretty okay, the seat just could have done with being slightly wider to meet the edges of the fairing better. If I wanted to be anal about it (seat - anal pun not intended) I could have the cover removed and a little more foam added but I'll see how it looks once the tail is painted and it's back together.

Have just flatted the tail ready for painting so may get it painted tonight... if alcohol doesn't get the better of me first Laughing

Few bits of crap in it but it will be fine with a flat and polish tomorrow.

Feel like I'm making some progress now Very Happy Thumbs Up

As much as I wasn't really in the mood, I pushed on tonight and got a couple more bits painted.

Had got the basecoat on the lower part of the nose fairing yesterday while I had the silver in my gun and figured I may as well get that finished tonight.

At this point I am VERY conscious of the fact that if I mess up the decals I'm going to have one seriously fugly paint scheme! Neutral

As I had the black in my gun I got the hugger done too

Really glad to have progressed this far but gonna have a break from painting for a few nights now. Going to get the bits buffed up tomorrow night then just have a leisurely weekend building it back up and hopefully give it a run too Very Happy

Just realised I'm still missing a couple of decals for the tank.

Does anyone know of someone with a vinyl cutter who can do them? Or can recommend anywhere that does small 'one off' jobs like this?

I basically need a couple of these

https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1221_zps7tarbnnk.jpg

I'm not bothered about the red insert, just the silver will do. So long as it's roughly the right size and a similar font I'll be happy.

Can't get them anywhere so just something close will do, tank will look odd without them.
