It's alive

I've been absolutely shitting it all day, thinking what could go wrong or how much of an ordeal it may be getting it going.

Couldn't have asked for better, it fires up, sounds and feels mega crisp and smooth, idles nice and everything. Absolutely made up.

Stupidly threw new carbs on not thinking and it didn't want to catch..finally it clicked... I checked the carbs and slides were totally closed, turned the idle screws in a bit, and first kick it fired. I Pre jetted the carbs to a base setting but didn't think to play with the idle. It runs brill.

Borrowed a standard CDI off a fella on the RDLC Forum and bought a new yammy loom, got a little lithium battery on it, all the wiring needs a tidy but I know what's what now.

Did a few bits over the weekend

Mount for RG500 oil tank

https://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/yazza54/E137E324-5667-458B-80EB-9DDADB133583_zps2eufzsuy.jpg

Battery box & lithium battery

https://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/yazza54/6F17A3E3-A304-472A-B68F-A67A93FE4435_zpssagrilog.jpg

Majority wired up, need to do the ignition key wiring next. There's a fair bit of wiring I need to tape up/hide, as I've used a full RD loom and whilst at the moment I don't have plans to fit lights it would be daft to cut all that wiring out. Regulator and fuse box etc mounted up.

Oil pump is bled up and working nicely

Rsv carbon mudguard and nice bolts

https://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/yazza54/20661A59-39A9-45F7-A570-A680559645BD_zpskm3li6q6.jpg

Adjusted up and finished gear linkage

https://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/yazza54/570901E4-29EC-49AE-BF8B-AC04B8811393_zps4ogllgnn.jpg

Had to extend the loom for the coils and mount them up, earth the engine etc. Now that's all done I still need to get throttle cables made.

I vaguely had an inclination to build a similar thing. Ended up with a reasonable 350YPVS that got sold when I had to move house.

Now I have this instead:

Not quite as much fun as 90bhp, but still excellent fun!

[edit] Ohgosh I forgot how much I like the sound of those Banshee/Cheetah lumps... *fap*

Nice kwak. Yeah it's sounds very fit, not at all lazy like some bigger strokers do.

Looking forward to getting it on the dyno, it's not all about numbers but will be nice to have an idea. This spec of motor is capable of well over 100bhp, but I plan on having a reliable rev limit and safe jetting. We'll see!

Been quiet but done quite a lot lately albeit not stuff that is mega exciting to take pics of

Wiring is now complete, fitted ignitech mappable ignition and wired the aprilia ignition key up to the Yamaha loom, killswitch wired into the ignitech too.

Bled brakes up finally and had to modify rear caliper mount as it turned out my brakes were binding once I'd given the rear caliper a pump, nice and free now.

Riveted chain up and torqued up front sprocket, swinger bolt, head bearings.

Got my quick action Domino throttle and a shitload of inner & outer cables, brass nipples etc from venhill and set about making cables this weekend. Turned out quite well.. so today is the first time I ran it up with no premix. Fitted clear lines on the pump and watched it pump back up to the carbs. drained the tank of premix and chucked a gallon of petrol in and runs nice. Big step forward as I could actually ride it round the block now if I wanted.

Little vid, its probably run about 8 times since the first run video now, not really run in but done plenty of heat cycles so not too afraid to give it a bit more of a blip without going too mad.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T13FXKrhc6g&feature=youtu.be

Next I need to get fairings and a dash fitted.

Very cool!

Can I ask how much Kenny's custom pipe's cost you? And did he have a pattern/set of dimensions for that engine/spec already?

Also how much work was it to wire up the aftermarket programmable ignition/CDI? Is it a case of chopping off the Yam CDI plug, and after tracing the wires and extending if required, putting on a new plug for the Ignitech unit? Do you get a base map with it BTW?

Kenny's pipes were around 800 from memory, there's a hell of a lot of work involved. He had the bike and made them on it, spent 2 weeks designing them as its a totally custom engine build in a totally different frame.

It's not mega difficult, you get a 20 pin plug to fit the ignitech and a load of pins, in the end I only used about 6 as I don't have power valves to control etc. if you have a colour wiring diagram and some basic skills you can do it.

Maps wise I got some base figures from someone with a similar engine and programmed it in but I'll have it fine tuned on the dyno.

Do you have a RD?

Building it seems fun. But to set it up to run right is going to be challenging.. I imagine hours and hours on dyno.

Imagine away..It's runs really well. The map I have and jetting are from a fairly similar engine. Even the first start was first kick, you'd be correct if I didn't have any base setting information but the fella I bought a lot of parts off gave me a starter for 10 with regards to jetting and ignition.

A few hours on the dyno should see me right, but it takes as long as it takes.

I never envisaged any of this being easy, if I was scared of a bit of a challenge I wouldn't have started the project.

£800ish for a pair of stainless custom one off pipes is a pretty good deal id say when you think of the work, time and measuring and fitting that must go into such works of art.

I assume Kenny measured the engine's squish, CR, Port timings etc and used computer simulation too to help design the pipes?

The Ignitech CDI sounds like a very nice bit of kit too! I don't have an RD no, but I wouldn't mind a programmable CDI to set up and eek out the last bit of performance from my bike's std engine.

Shame that Kenny only likes making YPVS and RD based pipes though! Martin Johnson seems to only do TZR pipes as well, and they both have a great rep for making pipes that work really well too!

Yep he measured absolutely everything, simulated, fine tuned but also knows his stuff and doesn't just rely on his computer simulation.

Kenny will make pipes for anything mate, he's just done a Suzuki GT500 motor in a GS500, he's doing pipes for a Vdue motor in an RS250, kettle gt750 motor in a TDR too. Try him Wink

What do you have then??

New ally rad fitted, my number 1 pet hate of the bike now sorted Smile the one before looked like a bit of a lash up close and to be fair it was just to get it going. Was a mito rad turned upside down. This is much better.

Ordered TZ fairings and got these genuine TZ nose cone brackets hopefully I can do something with them.

Few bits done today, made a mount this morning and installed the dash

https://youtu.be/sXevFb9kNKM

Everything working nice, wired the tacho into the Ignitech CDI as its the most accurate. Got the oil level light wired into the rg500 oil tank level switch.

Fitted a fan to the rad and wired that up,

Got a new set of M7RRs to go on when the wheels are back from powder coating along with titanium disc and pinch bolts and all new wheel bearings. Slowly getting there.

Took a gamble on gold for the wheels and happy with how they've turned out. A lot of shades of gold are either too dark or too light for me but saw this and thought it was worth a go. The gold discs look a bit in your face with the gold wheels but I'm sure once they're on the bike with tyres on it'll break it all up a bit and should look good. Plus gold wheels have always looked good against the Yamaha blue I'm planning on having it painted in that I've seen on various R1s.

New bearings, seals, right angle valves and titanium bolts

Fairing looks to sit quite well on there.... can't help thinking it's criminal to hide away those spannies though!

I think I'd be grafting in some clear perspex to the lower half of the side panels Laughing

What are you doing about a seat?
