That frame looks lovely!

I'd like to see some close up pics of the Triumph engine internals (pervert I know Laughing ), as there is an article in this months CMM magazine about re-building the Kawasaki W1 engine that was based on BSA's 650cc twin. They say how much better the design of the Jap lump is, and how they've eliminated troublesome features like crankshaft sludge traps, and it uses a wasted spark points ignition set up too.

Would like to see a de-badged Kawasaki lump in a Featherbed, just to see if it would confuse or offend people? Wink

Where do you find these projects? Only I see on Ebay, are insanely priced. I just was a relatively complete 60's 650. Ones that look like they are missing half the bits and rusty pieces of shit go for ~£2k, more if the numbers match.

I think its more of a case of right place right time! I picked this one up for cheap from Glasgow, the guy owned it for 30 years, but sadly had a stroke and couldn't complete it.

The front brake alone is worth more than half what I gave for it Smile

There's a lesson for us all.

Put your bike together and ride it. Don't collect bits for thirty years and have a stroke.

hah ya bastards!

Going to make a start this weekend I think, already sorted getting the frame and parts blasted, im planning to do the chassis first this time, as ive got a few motor parts to find (primary cases)

Edit: I found some history about the bike, turns out its a 1955 model 88 dommie that was sent to Whittaker's of Blackpool in march, a day after my old fella was born.

Well, time for a little update, nothing massive as I've been holding back on the build until Christmas is over with.

I got the bike up on the bench to start sorting through what I have got, making a little list out as I go on.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141127_194348_zps42e72d1e.jpg

Ignore the Front wheel, that's off my 67 Tr6R.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141127_195935_zpsbcee9190.jpg

Just sizing this up as its not staying on this bike, its going on my own, looks good, all it needs is linkages re-plating, and some new torque arms (about £30 for polished alloy)

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141127_201612_zps96aa2f48.jpg

Stripped the gearbox, (1959 slick shift)
All the bush's/bearings were absolutely toast, but all bar the kick start ratchet gear it was very good!

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141213_181947_zps0b2e36f3.jpg

The forks were stripped as I've ordered the full front end, with external springs, new dampers, stations bush's etc.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141213_182504_zps71cf261b.jpg

The only damage was the damper rod bolt, some idiot hadn't tightened it up, so when they came to insert the (stepped) spindle, it fowled the head of the bolt... so the solution was clearly, hit the spindle with a very large hammer... you can see its bent it, and shaved abit of the top.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141213_182545_zps8bd2cb55.jpg

Bottoms need a little bit of dressing up, but otherwise very good!

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f215/stesewell/20141213_182611_zps5214b83f.jpg

There probably wont be much happening until after Christmas now, the plan is to have a rolling chassis straight after the festive period.

Steve.

Are new bottom bushes on the stanchions a good sliding fit inside the sliders? Just saying, if the inside surfaces of the sliders are worn, don't waste time dolling up the outsides.

You probably already know, but the layshaft bushes can be replaced with needle rollers, which are available from bearing suppliers. Probably doesn't help anything, but makes you feel good. And they don't have to be reamed.

To be totally honest id get away with using the old bush's but that's not my way of working, as you rightly say, I expected it to be worn out, threads f*cked, at very least the damper bolt hole to no longer be round! but I was pleasantly surprised, so ive ordered the full front end now im happy with them.

yeah, I will be fitting needle rollers, only for the fact it saves me finding a reamer, saves time too Thumbs Up

Thought it might be a subtle modification, to take account of road camber and the curvature of the Earth.
