Bought from a freind for the sum of £200. It's a 1995 GS500E with 58,000 miles on the clock.

https://i.imgur.com/w8jA9dy.jpg

It doesn't run, and the rear brake dumped all its fluid. Has a lengthy MOT though, and did run recently...ah well. Will work on it on Thursday and see about getting it going.

Hoping this turns out to be an example of a cheap hack worth having. Laughing

Get it going, sell to noob for vast profit and then buy a cheap hack worth having.

You know it's just going to break otherwise at the most awkward opportunity.

Indeed. However, it has an MOT till november, half a tank of petrol & I have a ton of spares kicking about at my mums house. They're horrible to ride, unreliable, slow and generally the worst of the 500 twin commuters...but it is a bike, and for £200 we're talking fucked pitbike money.

Plus, the guy I bought it off wants funds ASAP to buy a ped & i need a wingman for ripping it on the superped. Laughing

This is option one. And a good option at that...

Option two however is to put knobblies on the wheels off my GS I crashed & greenlane/BBQ 2015 it, then use whats left of the road tyres giving it death at Lydden.

I'm conflicted.

Burn it! (at the stake it possible) would never consider another one of these, surprised you have after what was probably a worse experience with one than my own Shocked

A friend paid £500 for one a few months back thinking it was a bargain, it started developed a fueling bug on her ride back with it from Newcastle and eventually died at 70 mph somehow resulting in the back wheel locking up & her drifting into the hard shoulder of the A1 rather spectacularly, never heard good stories from anybody who's owned one of these.

After I'd finished crying over the loss of the KTM, id probably say for £200 that GS is ok.

What has always got me with these is that they look quite good compared to both the CB500 and ER5. Beam style fake alloy frame, mono shock rear end, big front disc and 3spoke sportsbike style wheels.

I hear that it's the finish and the engine that fuck up most on these bikes, but I reckon both could be sorted out. It could be possible to build one 100x more corrosion resistant, with deep quality paint and powdercoat, and acres of stainless fasteners etc.

The Motor if they are really that un-reliable? Then what about an ER5 or GPZ500 engine transplant? a 60bhp GS500E with a better chassis on paper than the frumpy looking twin shock opposition could be a legend? Idea

If you go for this option please do let me know, I've been toying with the same idea for the cb500 I've had hanging around. Would make for some interesting race toys.

Flat out, hit drain cover, back shot out one way, kept it up, it slid the other way I paniced bigtime and shut the throttle, it catapulted me over the bike, cue lots of bouncing, rolling and all my leathers falling apart. I then came round to find myself at the other end of the road, with the bike splatted into the bus stop.

Becausegs500.

Great sucess.

Sandblasted both plugs, replaced main fuse, shorted out starter solenoid and got a few coughs. Drained carbs, and it mysteriously started on the button.

Rides okay tbh, pulls fine, does burnouts pretty well.

I did pinch the workshop manual for it from work. My moneys on the timing being out, boss seems to think GP100/125 ignitions fuck up all the time.

ANYWAY

Fixed the rear brake. Caliper split seal was the wrong size, however all the caliper had been rebuilt. Touch.

Now everything works....Chucked it up for sale. Perhaps it'll do someone on a tight budget a good turn.

£200 for a running (now) MOT'd bike seems outstanding to me. Nice one!

But you are selling it after 3 days! It obviously made an impression Smile
