Not much good with the internets so if this works You should be looking a picture of a B40.https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/PICT0026_zpsfszmj18g.jpg[/img]

This belongs to My Dad who after buying and registering left it for
several years in His garage, I in a moment of masochism offered to
get it on the road.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/PICT0029_zpspflk8onh.jpg

Its definitely better looking the further away You are.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/PICT0030_zpsalvzpy7y.jpg

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/PICT0041_zpsfeqjqjq3.jpg

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/PICT0042_zpscif3no85.jpg

Its a unit single 350cc from 1959 one of the first 500.
The idea because of a minute budget is to get the thing running first before spending money on anything else.
At this point (about 2 months ago) we have never heard the engine run.

Yep get on and ride the bugger
If you go all precious and classic on it and throw money at it
it'll never see the road again.
Amal monobloc, 'mushroom' distributor, ahh that takes me back
Fag paper in points, tickling the carb, jerseys for goal posts
it were all fields round here when I were a lad....... Laughing

Am jealous.

+1 what WD said Thumbs Up

Just clean it up, get it running and ride it. Don't let it become a money pit.

Luvvit! Better put some oil in it first, I can tell there's none in else there'd be a pool of it under the bike.

That is absolutely lovely. Agreed about not over-restoring it, though it's a difficult one to judge. Wonder what the thing screwed into the side of the tank is?

Wotcha.

If you mean the thing in the first picture - it's the bracket that holds the rubber knee grips in place.

Wolfies correct.
These were a pain to get off needing a piece of metal welding to the screws.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/DSCF1247_zps0o7vdsdt.jpg

It was decided the top end was too worn so new small end, gudgeon pin, piston and rings also valves, guides and springs.

Three of the rocker cover stud holes needed helicoiling so head had to come off again.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/DSCF1284_zpsp2nishuf.jpg

The spark was intermitent so the old man decided on electic ignition.
This however fitted like a 6 fingered glove.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/DSCF1286_zpspxhqgjzk.jpg

After slotting the holes it fitted better.

She fired up after the 5/6th kick and sounded meatier than a 350 should. Now we know the engines good the rest of it could be looked at and some of it aint pretty!

I know the points housing clamp is shit and all that, but I'd almost bet 10 pence that the electronic ignition will leave you stranded somewhere, more than once.

Just realised- you still need the shitty clamp!

I mean the fastener that looks like a side cover screw, that releases the "distributor" so you can turn it to adjust the timing.

All my C15s were a bit old and abused, but that bit was always erratic. When you tightened it up, the timing moved.

you mean the fag paper in the points
could just as easily be a fag packet? Laughing

That electronic ignition 'upgrade' looks a bit crude and 1960s
I'm sure that could be refined.
It was probably ln all the mags in the 60s/70s as a new
high tech improvement over points/condenser
Just looks nasty now.

I can't even see it. Is it one of those mad points-triggered electronic systems?

The "distributor" clamp is tighter than the proverbial.

My worry would be the two mounting screws that hold the printed circuit board.

There was a problem of the left fork being seized and the swing arm blowing about in the wind.
The wheels had to come off for new tyres so seeing as most of the bike was going to be stripped it was decided to paint the frame.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/DSCF1299_zpstpdkntgx.jpg

New swing arm shaft and bearings.

Only then did My failing eye sight spot this.

I will point it out to you.

Can any one confirm the seat loop is meant to be like this IE appearing bent?
I've compared it with a photo on ebay which looks like it may be this shape on purpose but it was hard to tell.

Thanks that's the first line drawing I've seen showing the seat loop as it really looks.

New non stick slider, one on the right with snapped stud.

Sprayed along with non bent seat loop and new swing arm.

The drawing shows the swingarm to be a bit lopsided.

Does the spindle sit ok in yours? Did the wheel look straight in the bike?

Didn't really check that closely when the wheel was in the bike, if you look at the photo of the slots the left hand one bends upward so the further back the spindle goes the more out of alignment the wheel will be.

Today's progress.
