Thanks, I see it as a challenge, if I can get a Suzuki GS500e with 80,000 miles on the clock running like it was new the B40 should be a piece of piss. Wink

Great work so far. Will look forward to the finished result. When do you think that will be?

My Dads going through some bad stuff at the moment so I will have to wait for one or two bits He wanted to do but next couple of months should see it back together.

I have had fun with the swing arm shaft I presume these would have been pressed in at the factory, unfortunately something I don't possess so decided to swap it for 22mm copper tube!

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/DSCF1339_zpschtwnzma.jpg

The only way the shaft was going in was with a big hammer so turned a drift to save from knackering the end of the shaft.

My philosophy in life is"Why stand up when you can sit down, why sit down when you can lay down." So chemicals.

Doesn't work like it used to, turns paint soft so you can wipe it off rather than lifting it.
So i use wire brush attached to a drill or bench grinder with wire wheel on the barrel , head and rocker which were then painted with high temp paint.
The crankcases were wire wool for ten minutes then spayed with silver paint . I hated it so was wire wooled again. The cases only took half an hour.

Very interesting. One question - earlier you wrote that you did not have an original swingarm shaft, so you are using a 22mm section of copper tube instead. Is that right - just a copper tube to join the swingarm to the frame?

The shaft is in there, driven in with a specially made drift. I would guess the copper was just to hold it in place.

22mm copper tube would last until you sat on it Shocked

Yep MattB's right, I was just using it to hold the swingarm and the shims (you can just make out in the pics) in place.

If you have the right tools like bench grinder and polishing mops and don't mind getting filthy it takes/ took me about three hours to do the whole engine.

Death stopped play for awhile.

So did things like head bearings taking a month to sort out and buying the wrong rims and getting sent the wrong spokes ect.

Many thanks, a little update of progress.

I've been putting off the painting of tank and panels because I do so little spraying with compressor I'm never sure of the outcome.

Had to get on with it as autumn is here so cant rely on the weather, here's the outcome.

https://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w464/deeds18/B40/PICT0122_zpseuw70cb3.jpg

and a bit more progress with the chassis.
