How do you keep the patience to spray something? I can't do it, I get bored waiting for it to dry enough to apply a second coat. I ask because a nice, smokey Italian machine has fallen into my possession. I would rather not cough up for someone else to spray it.
I re-attempted the fork seal trick on my Kwak, I lifted off the dust cover and it would appear that there is a load of Vaseline underneath it. I was puzzled for a bit, but then realised that one of my daft mates had told me to do it to help seal the rubber, and I fell for it. So the melted Vaseline gave the impression of leaking fork seals, what a prat. With regards to seal life-span, I'd agree that it must only last so long before the rubber starts to get hard and not seal, the advantage with off-roaders though is that usually they will have some sort of fork guard, gaiters or socks whereas road bikes tend to have chrome stanchions on display. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

Patience is critical when spraying, particularly with the preparation side of things. I learned very early on that there's no way of rushing any part of it if you want a decent result. Temptation is always to get the paint on so you can see how it looks - but that invariably ends in disappointment because the end result is crap due to rushing
Have already seen the Mito thread, can't wait to see what you do with it.
If you want any help when you get to painting stage just let me know, if you're prepared to take your time with it you'll get decent results.
On the topic of painting... started flatting down the side panels today as they are next on my list to paint. Got part way through doing the r/h one then realised I haven't tried them or nose fairing on the bike to see if they fit / line up yet.
They were just loosely cable tied in place when I got it and the flimsy crappy mounting brackets on the frame had been squished. I'd already crudely bashed those back in to some shape and did a little straightening of the headlight bracket but there is a strong chance none of this is going to fit without alteration so set about doing a mock up with the panels.
Got both side panels on and they looked okay from either side but things weren't lining up right at the front, headlight bracket seems to be shifted to the left (or right looking at it head on)
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1516_zps8fnadvbv.jpg
Had a quick try of the nose and it confirmed the bracket needs to come over to the right - gonna have to get the frame jig on it
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1517_zpsv0phde6y.jpg
So a little gentle persuasion with the 'jig' and things are looking a little more symmetrical
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1518_zpsujapnioh.jpg
Tried the nose back on and it sat better but things are still far from right!
The fairings for this are an absolute PITA! I'm sure even factory new they must be a pain to fit without scratching hell out of them! Only a few bolts to secure it to the actual frame then the whole front end bolts to itself, it's just fiddly, flimsy and crap!!
Anyway, heat was really stressing me so came in to a have a drink and chill for a few mins... then went back out to this
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1519_zps9afhsbc7.jpg
Headlight has melted the nose!! WTF? Somethings not right!
The headlight shouldn't be protruding like that and the nose still nowhere near fits, I fitted the headlight surround insert things so I could tell properly where things should be sitting and it made the situation worse.
The nose is now right up against the headlights and it needs to go at least an inch further back yet!
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1520_zpsa7qdtl0p.jpg
Heat was really getting to me now and I couldn't think straight, I feel like I'm going backwards and just really pissed off!
Picked up the crow bar ready to start smashing shit up... then had a light bulb moment
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1521_zpsi8ifw2qz.jpg
Must be the headlights that are mounted wrong on that bracket
Set to mounting them the other way about (and got the back of my hand burned multiple times from the stupid magnifying glass projector things in the process!)
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1523_zpss3eust1s.jpg
That looks to make more sense
Nose then slides back where it should sit and headlights are sitting in the right position
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1522_zps8v0t1fyl.jpg
Took about another hour of making minor 'adjustments' to the frame mounts with a lump hammer and a few bits of tweaking here and there and eventually everything fits and lines up correctly
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1524_zpss4qshvnf.jpg
That was all quite infuriating and I feel I've made no progress but... now I've calmed / cooled down and looking on the positive side... if I'd have already painted (or indeed PAID someone else to paint) those panels, they would be needing doing again by now after all that thrutching about. So yeah, could've been a lot worse ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

I may not have read up on this in the mist of staring the the pictures of your work so here I ask.
What setup do you have for painting. Clean room with spray gun or is it a rattle can job. ____________________ yzf 600r |

Hi mate, the frame and other bits and pieces have been done with a rattle can but I'm doing the panels / bodywork with a gun.
I have filtered extraction and an air fed mask in the workshop but it is very cramped in there at the moment so the majority of this has been sprayed outside. ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

I was thinking it was a spray gun job on the fairings.
Nice work keep it going. ____________________ yzf 600r |

Thanks mate
Yeah for the fairings I prefer to run stuff through the gun. You can get an equally good finish (at least initially) with quality 2k rattle cans but it would prove an expensive way of doing it for a full respray.
Last thing I felt like doing tonight was painting but I've got so much to get through I gotta keep plodding on so got the r/h side panel flatted ready for paint.
Before I paint it, I put some new aluminium heat shielding on the bottom section and of course... fitted (some of) the LEDs
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1528_zpsedr8qe9x.jpg
Managed to get it painted and a single coat of clear on
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1526_zpsetxmpenv.jpg
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1527_zpsdkoq9euw.jpg
Would usually prefer to get a second wet coat of clear on but was having unwelcome visitors
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1525_zpslsjom6tt.jpg
Might keep him there as a mascot
Had various specimens of nature sat in the first coat so can't give another coat over them and if I try to do anything about them at this stage it'll make a mess... so they stay as they lay
Got to expect it painting outside and it's no big deal, although I'd have preferred to have got another coat on there's enough clear on to be able to flat and polish it once it's back on the bike so no worries, happy enough
So that's one side panel out of the way
Just another one of those.. then the nose.. then front mudguard... hugger....
Really wish I'd never bought this thing ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Today my left indicator fell out due to a crack in the fairing running from the indicator hole down to the end of the fairing...
Tip on repairing at low cost
How would i go about fixing the crack to make it strong again?
what items do i need
indicator crack goes from the bottom of the stem and straight down
(not mine from google)

Tricky to say what's best without seeing the damage but a plastic weld is probably your best bet.
If it's a clean break without any paint missing etc you'd probably get away with just welding it from the back and leaving the front.
You'll just need a soldering iron and a cable tie (though if you have any spare broken plastics from the bike it's better to use a slither of that rather than a cable tie).
Once your soldering iron is up to temperature, hold the crack firmly together and just put a couple of stitches in it by pushing the tip of the iron into the plastic and dragging it down a few mil'.
Once it's held together work the iron down the entire crack, try to make a groove about half the depth of the plastic and then working plastic back in to smooth back over as you go along.
You can then keep taking a bit of the cable tie on the tip of your iron and using it to build up any areas that need it.
Fumes from this really are nasty so do outside if you can or at least very well ventilated and with a fan at the side of you to blow fumes away.
One of those things that easier to show than explain really but plenty of vids on youtube etc for plastic welding.
If you were local I'd do it for you but I don't think it would be worth you paying the postage both ways for me to do it so you may as well just have a crack at it (pun intended) ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Good luck... and pitchures when you've done it please
Today postie did bring...
New fairing bolts
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1530_zpsvkxjcfqn.jpg
£1.75 - Would usually get stainless but they be too fancy for this bike
Was missing a couple of spire clips from the fairing, too fidly to get a nut and washer on the back so had to replace those
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1531_zpsxjprxyyi.jpg
£1.64 No idea why these things are so expensive for what they are
Also, discovered the other day that the throttle cable (although seemingly working fine) had been bodged and was being held together with insulation tape.
Can't be 100% confident that it's operating the oil feed properly so not messing / re-bodging; brand new one bought
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1532_zpsaqoq7obh.jpg
£14.99
Tonight I (reluctantly) got stuck into the l/h side panel... it's been a bit of a late one!
Gave it the same treatment as the r/h one with LEDs fitted and some new heat shielding
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1533_zpsdvay2pcr.jpg
Then flatted the primer, degreased, base coat.... and finally (at 11:30pm!) got the second coat of clear on
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1534_zps6yppbkye.jpg
Can finally start unwinding for the night now

Only made a little progress with this tonight.
Spent some time attempting to fit the new throttle cable only to find it doesn't fit!
Want to start building the bike back up tomorrow so have ended up rebodging and making some alterations to the original cable, it's now working fine and I'm happy enough with it
Wasted nearly 2 hours of my time but on the plus side, will be returning the new one for a refund so that will be £14.99 saved
Other than that, I want to get the wiring in for the LEDs before I rebuild so fitted the rear LEDs to the splash guard.
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1535_zpsl2ouewqz.jpg
Then quick test
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1536_zpsqzxrgqnw.jpg
Will be interesting to see how it looks when it's all built back up and the blue ones on the side panels are illuminated too but.... they will be unplugged while I'm riding it and will be on only for ad' pics and any prospective buyer visits!!
4 LED strips £2.10

Made some progress today.
Got the tail, tank and seats etc back on then sorted wiring for side LEDs and got the side panels on with new indicators fitted.
Need to extend the wires for the indicators yet but other than that all went smoothly

Need to start making decisions on decals now so I can be getting those ordered.
Still got the nose and front mudguard to paint yet but plan to get those done over the next couple of days then in for MOT before the end of the week ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Epic colour and then some!
The orange wheels go brilliantly with it too. It just needs some orange Reiju and RS2 graphics now to finish it off.
Turn on the LED's for the ebay ad, and wait for kids banging your door down with fist fulls of cash!
TBH I'd say don't ride this, well apart from getting it MOT'd, as you don't want another keeper do you!
Oh and I thought about this colour for your Mito, and how well it might go with burnt candy red wheels, seat, and decals? maybe a red screen too? |

Yeah must admit I'm really liking the colour, think it really shows off the lines of the bike.
Pics don't do it justice really, it looks different from every angle as the light bounces off it, will try and get a decent vid of it once it's finished.
Must admit I'm less sure about my ideas for decals now seeing it more or less together. I'd originally thought it was going to need a lot of orange but I'm now thinking maybe some orange 'RIEJU' ones for the bottom of the side panels but then more discreet black / carbon fibre effect (weight saving innit ) for the others
Need to put my mind to it properly and bounce a few ideas around with what the decal guy can and can't do but no real rush for decals anyway, just want it on the road now!
This will be very much geting ridden!! I've slaved over 2 projects all this time and not been on the road yet!
I like the look of this bike and various things about it but I won't be getting attached to it. Will just be in a nice position really where I've got it for daily use while it's up for sale and as much as I don't want to /can't keep it, I'm not going to be in a desperate hurry to part with it over the next few months either so can try and hold out for good money for it.
No tears will be shed when it sells, I just swap the insurance over to the RS1 and have my first play on that.... and also start the Mito rebuild... then the fun begins again ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

Managed to get the nose painted tonight
https://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/RS1Rebuild/DPP1550_zpsmwobksuk.jpg
Getting close now
Only the front mudguard left to do (am leaving the hugger off for now) and that's a piece of piss so feel I'm at a bit of a milestone now.
So tomorrow I'm going to commit and get the MOT booked
Going to try and book it for Thursday which should give me plenty of time to get the front mudguard painted and fitted then just give everything a final once over, figure out where the left over nuts and bolts go etc
Also, had a quick test of the LEDs now they're all in

Again! Again! Again!
I agree that a minimalist look regarding graphics would suit this bike to a tee. Just enough to tell its an RS2 and leave it at that, and if your inner teen says carbon fibre vinyl, try not to go over the top with it. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

EDIT: I'm still admiring that top picture of it in the dark, those "eyes" of the headlight look so evil, my inner 16 year old is melting out of my nose. I'll go and get my wallet! ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

It's an Alien bike glowing blue with those big Projector eyes sticking out!
Awesome job though as ever!
That night shot will be the money shot for your prospective buyers, and after spraying their load over their laptop, I reckon you'll have a fight outside for the first to get into your house with the cash!
Oh and one thing I forgot, is that does the exhaust silencer unbolt at all? It just looks to me as if the exhaust tip is angled towards the rear tyre, and could do with moving so that you don't spray oily smoke all over the back tyre? Ouch! |

Will see about the queue with cash, gonna hold out and try to get close as I can to 1k for this, that's how I'm vetting the potentials!
Got a grand? No? Feck off then!
That would be 'top' money obviously but as I say, I don't need to be in a desperate hurry to sell it now. I can lower my price / expectations as the next few months draw on
Main thing is, I fully expect to be out having fun on this by weekend!!
If I was to bin it on the first day... I genuinely wouldn't be overly upset by it! I've done enough stripping and rebuilding, rubbing down and repainting etc etc... I need to be riding and enjoying what I've done
Yeah you're absolutely right about the end can, it's on my 'to do' list
It has three bolts so can be rotated into three different positions, obviously just 2 min job to rotate it. I'd just put it back to how it was when I painted it off the bike but it wasn't until I put it back on that I noticed where it was pointing ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50

If you're not careful Steve is going to run out of clean socks to mop up after with before you even get going on the Mito!
I think someone's daddy would pay a grand for it, especially when it wasn't another teen at the door when they went to view the bike.
When was the last time you were on a bike? ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

TBH, I really don't expect to get a grand for it - that price is more of a deterrent to stop anyone trying to take it from me too soon
Around £700 - £800 would be more realistic but that will be my autumn / winter price. Not even going to put it up for sale straight away, need to send the V5 off for the colour change anyway so will wait until I've got that back and had a few weeks of fun with it before it goes on the bay
Last time I had a bike on the road was my NC24... just been trying to work out how long ago that was and it got a bit depressing! Must be at least 12 years ago somehow
Don't understand how that's happened, in my head it just feels like a few years back I think someone must have hit the fast forward button when I got into my late 20s, I don't know where all those years have gone ____________________ Current Bikes / Projects: 1999 Rieju RS1 50
