This is a seat post clamp it is slightly too long.

The side with the washer is threaded like a bolt. My plan was to cut down the other side with a hack saw then run a tap down the thread to resurrect it. Any better ideas?

I'd clamp it in a vice and file the female end with a hand file.

Depends if the threads bottom out in the nut / female part.

That's how they fit tightly against one another. In the unlikely event they didn't, I'd file both sides.

Whereas I'm far less subtle than your esteemed self and would probably employ the same method with a grinding wheel Mr. Green

Filing the female end would work but once the bolt end hits the bottom of the hole you'll need to cut thread down. When the thread engagement gets below one diameter you're compromising the connection.

Washers were my initial thought but it has a lug on one side which stops the use of the washers on that side. Stacking them up on the other would affect the aesthetics. Wink

Thats how much I have to play with, I can see the thread goes up to the the shoulder I guess I'll try it gradually with the file Thumbs Up

And as to how much It needs cutting down, I do not know, but it doesn't clamp the tube hard enough, I'll start with about 3/4mm and go from there.

A spring washer might be narrow enough, or you could grind down a normal washer?

Laughing

It's a clamp. If I open it up and then tighten it it'll be in the same position.

???

Do you understand what it is used for?

The bolt tightens on a clamp, the clamp clamps onto a seat post. If I widen the clamp when I tighten the bolt it will still only tighten the clamp to the same ammount, not enough to hold the post. Filling down the female side will allow it to clamp tighter.

No point buying another with I can modify this one, it'll be quicker than waiting for another to arrive and won't cost anything.
