I am fairly new to this forum and this is my first 'proper' post so here goes....

i bought this grey import 1991 honda crm250 last week for £1300, its spent the past 4 years living in the countryside so it was covered in mud and cow shite, but with less than 15,000km on the clock i knew there would be a nice bike under there somewhere
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_5895_zpsxmfwkqt4.jpg

after a few days of fettling and cleaning she looks like this (and of course the picture taken on a decent camera helps a bit Wink )
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_0889b_zpsjfhtmdbn.jpg

But there are a few jobs i want to do/parts i want to change

- The rear sub frame is rusted

-the clutch lever is a cheap nasty aftermarket one which the blade is too short on and the F brake lever/master looks old and corroded so i wanna replace both

-its going to be ridden on the road around cenrtral bristol so it will need indicators and (maybe) mirrors (sometimes Laughing )
the wiring is there with a relay so it should be a case of wiring indicators straight in.

-someone has cut a nasty slot out of the original rear mudguard for a tail tidy or something so i need a new mudguard

-remove the hand guards because theres not really enough bar space for em and the mounts are chewing up the renthal pad (even though its knackered anyway) and im not that keen on them

-fit red renthal bars. it has renthals on atm but they are looking old.

ooh! I like that a lot! A proper 2stroke supermoto indeed!

I think Adam's bike would like to have those wheels and tyres for his gentle rides to work with the BMW M3's and MR2's he often meets. Laughing

@pepperami: nah, you probably just have a large screen Razz

@dangerousdave: from a distance or in the pictures you wouldnt see the blemishes that would bother me (like the slot cut out of the tail or rust on the frame) but its still a real nice looking bike. its an animal on the road, its geared for quick acceleration and it doesnt weigh much either. top end is about 100/110mph.

Here's mine, red and purple, in "pretend supermoto" mode, with tyres courtesy of Steve, with "Tristan." who owns an AR, off the forum, I took this picture after picking his bike up after he slipped and broke his leg. Laughing

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/DSC_01741_zpsbwo19wey.jpg

I'm not sure about getting some YZF-R125 wheels for the TTR, or some NSR 125 wheels for the CRM. Thinking

Look after it. Tea leaves love them, I love mine, pulls the front end up in third and tops out at around the tonne! Thumbs Up

Well... I'm nothing if not a gentleman. I just wanted an excuse to ride his AR and see if it was much different. Laughing

It was very funny, I'd got to a suitable waiting point, Tristan wasn't close behind, gave him a minute or two then decided he'd crashed. I turned and headed back to fund him flat on his back with the front wheel up in the air with the bike wedged in the rut somehow. : lol: : lol:

With the nonstart, I've found my killswitch has been caught between run and off because it's worn a bit. Maybe nothing though.

today some deconstruction took place. the bikes had a new sark plug fitted (which was buried annoyingly under the petrol tank) and ive cleaned out the carb/jets as well

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_5960s_zpsgvasrzot.jpg

ive taken off the rear subframe and its worse than i thought, somebody has touched up the paint in places by painting over the rust. ive scraped some of that off in the worser places and the frame looks fairly rotten. ive thought about grinding the rust off and repainting it myself, but maybe it would make more sense to buy another one (£45 from a breaker) Confused

the rust has got to that. doesn't look too bad though, as long as it is solid it should be ok with fresh paint.

does the bike run yet?

the rust isnt too deep from what i can tell, its more to do with it being around the welds and tight spaces that i wouldnt be able to get into

And no it still wont start Confused Sad

I found these on ebay -> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/Honda-Crm-250-Mk2-Plastics/262070802155?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&_trksid=p5197.c100068.m2280&_trkparms=ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140211130857%26meid%3D93392cf991b542018a159da962f93f93%26pid%3D100068%26clkid%3D164664969100750078&_qi=RTM2063723 the whole set looks quite badly painted and one of the front fairing pieces is cracked. i only need the rear mudguard so I'm thinking £35 is maybe a bit steep. what do you guys think?

If that was a set of kmx125/200 plastics they would probably make £80.

Parts for old bikes aren't cheap dude.

But one question, why?

OK 2 questions, have you got it running yet? If not would time be better spent getting it running right before getting into cosmetics?

the ebay listing has 6 days left, by which point i should have the bike running or at least know what im dealing with. £35 did seem a bit steep for an uncomplete set of plastics which look well used but maybe it isn't. £35 still doesnt put much of a dent in what ive put aside to spend on this bike if need be though.

why im looking for a new rear mudguard is because (for reasons unknown) somebody has cut a square section out the rear of the panel and it also has the slot for the original rear light which isnt present, it just looks bodged and scruffy. the ebay set look like they are meant for a motocross bike so its clean with no light fittings

you can see what i mean from the picture atatched

cheers

The old honda is running again so now work continues Smile

These plastics were delivered last week, they have been repainted badly from the original white into 2 different shades of red... But now that i have the rear mudguard ive been after, the rest will probably be kept as spares (unless anybody else needs them for their CRM?)

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_0965_zpshyhfs7vw.jpg

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_6216_zpsub2mt4rt.jpg

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_6213_zpsfilid4rm.jpg

The two mudguards are a different fit, even though they are from the same bike/ model. It looks like its gonna need a bit of altering before it fits

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_6217_zpsilj2ksxg.jpg

The erm 'tail tidy' is just a tail piece which has been hacked off another bike and was screwed onto the mudguard using plastic number plate screws... Nothing like doing the job properly is there? Laughing

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_6227_zpsyjxsgrhl.jpg

i stripped the old paint with cheap wilko value paint remover, and filled the holes with mitre bond (a strong super glue with activator spray) then sanded level
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/IMG_6277_zpsihidbps1.jpg

and after 5 coats of primer... it'll be painted black after ive drilled new holes into it

So this is the CRM? this is gonna look mint, i can already see you're prepared to put the effort into it to make it so. its a shame about the rear mudguard though and that somebody's incompetance has meant that you have had to find another panel. i can only guess that section was cut out of the rear for the tail tidy, some people just have no concept of how to make an improvement and do it right, in fact it probably would of looked better if they left the original light cluster on it to begin with.

looking forward to more updates Smile

instead of buying a replacement sub frame, i had the rusty original one shot blasted and powdercoated instead. the frame was solid underneath the rust, no pinholes or anything! i didnt want it white again because white doesnt stay clean for very long, so its been painted red. the cost was £30 Very Happy

I had some chrome paint leftover from another project, so I've done the fork yokes, gear lever, brake pedal, kickstart and a few other bits in it... i didnt want this page to become too pic heavy so heres a before/after of just the LH yokes. you get the idea Wink
