cheers vince, that paintjob was a bit of a ball ache actually because initially the paint reacted quite badly so i had to layer up on the coats but reprime and sand it in between applications. I went through half a pack of halfords wet and dry on it alone! Its a real nice finish though, and the quantity of coats means i was able to sand out all the scratches and stone chips. its also turned out quite reflective as im sure you can tell. Should be durable too once it hardens fully

The Nissin brakes are off the bike and have been stripped down

the bleed nipple though is seized in nicely and because its made of cheese, the nut has been rounded off in an attempt to remove it. all i can think of is to apply some heat and force on a smaller socket. otherwise its a new calliper
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_1018_zpssgep9ymm.jpg

id like to keep the original lever really but it is looking tatty and the rubber on the master cylinder is starting to perish
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/DSC_1019_zps4zg2ehml.jpg

original hose i presume, judging by the patina

Had this on an old caliper I was rebuilding.
Have you got a bench vice?
If you do, can you get the jaws on to the nipple and turn the caliper around the nipple?
That's how I got mine out!

The nipple snapped off on my rear caliper on my CRM when I was trying to bleed the brakes after I replaced the Master Cylinder when the seal blew and I lost all my fluid. It was cheaper to get a second hand one than a rebuild kit.

I then went to drill the snapped nipple out, and snapped the drill bit off in the the caliper. Laughing Embarassed

I then ended up just turning the caliper upside down and putting some wood between the pads and bleeding out the banjo bolt. Laughing

im not even sure this one is worth an update but i have the pictures so here it is....

24 years of rust and dirt on the rear wheel cams lets the look of the shiny swingarm down, i wanted to get them shot and powdered but i thought the pressure of the wheel nuts might cause the powder coat to crack, so i did it myself instead
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/31_zps8ufmtsmf.jpg

i got an 80's makita drill for jobs like this, i put a wire head on it and grinded the cams down to good metal

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/33_zps4eqdnh2s.jpg

i got the sandpaper/wet n dry out and my girlfriend wanted to help, so i did one and she did the other. teamwork! She actually seemed quite proud of herself Laughing

in the hands of my new assistant....
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/34_zpsjqekllfl.jpg

i used heat dispersant engine paint because you can apply it thin without primer and it still dries hard

i couldnt reuse the old bleed nipples so i bought new and red dust caps to match...

Im really pleased how well these calipers turned out, and once they are set up with the red HEL hoses they're gonna make a huge difference to the look of the bike....

....And so ive ended up with three brake lever/masters, the top one being the original, which is quarter a century old and i think with its straight bladed lever it looks ancient. its in shitty condition as well, The rubber inside the master cylinder has perished and broken, bolts are seized and it would be a shame to put that back onto new renthal bars. I bought the chinese cnc master off ebay to replace it, I was drawn in by the cheap price and the red bits i guess but you guys here convinced me that using a chinq master cylinder wasnt such a good idea, and i scrapped the idea of fitting that and bought a Nissin unit which is from a 2013 Honda CB500. I thought at least i know what im buying, quality wise Thumbs Up

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/43_zpshhaekyfh.jpg

I did a swap-over on the levers but Im not sure it looks 'right' somehow. I think these levers are what id expect to see people fit on small engined sports bike like the cbr125 or yamaha yz but the nissin lever was far too long for what is essentially a motocross bike. I was thinking first of all about cutting it down and rounding off the end using a vice and a dremel....

To be honest mate, i think those forks look good with the gaitors... Btw, where did you buy your supermoto wheels from?

I did think about removing the gaitors from the forks but decided that if I want to change the wheels back to the knobbly tyred ones then I would have to refit the other dirt bike stuff as well.

I bought the wheels from a friend of a friend for £200 and only came with the rear sprocket. The hubs are Talon and the rims are anodised Morad, which is a far better finish than stove enamelling or plastic coating.
The front disc was £95 from Race-Spec and I had a spare rear disc in the shed that was originally meant for the dirt bike. The tyres that came on the wheels were worn out Dunrops but they protected the rims until I was ready to replace those with new Pirelli Diablos.

I have fitted the largest front sprocket that would fit and while Renthal did not sell one then Talon Engineering had the size that I needed on their shelf.Top people Wink Thumbs Up

It would look better with the gaitors left on i think... It sounds like youve run out of things to do to your bike, sometimes when that happens i think i look for parts to change on my bike just for the hell of it Laughing

The reason i asked about the wheels is because yours look the same as mine (or similar at least) just in a different colour. I dont know what make my wheels are because they were on the bike when i bought it, but the red anodising is starting to fade and wear off the spokes so i would like to buy new wheels at some point

New SM wheels are expensive to buy, especially if you buy them as complete wheels from somewhere like Talon,Central Wheels etc.

A friend did their XR250R as a Supermoto conversion by buying some spare wheels, dismantling them and sending off the OEM hubs to be painted and reassembled with new stainless spokes and painted ally rims. This would be a cheaper option.

But if your hubs are anodised they can be redone in a different colour.I have had some red bike parts redone in black, which does not fade like red plating seems to,which turns to pink after a while. If your rims are painted they can be shot blasted and repainted.

The hubs are black and havent faded, so i could have them rebuilt onto new rims if it worked out cheaper than buying new wheels. However, from what i can tell it probaby wouldnt be once the cost of labour and new spokes are factored in Confused
the rims are anodised too and im not sure how i like the idea of having the rims powder coated, if powdercoating on top of an anodised surface is even possible...? i'll have to keep an eye on ebay and gumtree i think, to see if i can find a cheap set

ive just noticed you have what look like rubber frame protectors on your bike, do you think i could get some to fit my CRM? the alloy ones are what i would ideally like, but they are like hens teeth for this bike

They are not rubber frame protecters but plastic.Polisport I think. But I bought them years ago, with the intention of making some ally plate frame protecters at some time in the future. It would not be difficult if you start of with a cardboard template and then cut the plate with a bandsaw.

If you go to 'goggle images' and type in 'CRM 250 SM',there are some good examples Wink

yeah i suppose, these really are what im looking for.. unfortunately though im not skilled enough to fabricate a pair from a template. ive emailed a couple of mx parts stockists that show them on their websites, but both seem far-fetched and neither have got back to me... Confused

14.01.16

ive got a small selection of stickers gathering, so starting with the rear mudguard...
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/45_zpszsb9jm83.jpg

i like the HRC graphics where they were on the old mudguard so ive stickered the new one the same...

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/49_zpstnofw92s.jpg

The old one is a UFO replica which has had a slot hacked out for the original light cluster and also has scratched and gouges all over it, so it looks sh*t and i couldnt put that on the bike...
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/50_zpselz3fgko.jpg

probably the closest thing to a personalised plate without spending 3k+
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/52_zps5fon56vs.jpg

Fenders are clean and ready to go back on. They got some scratches that i couldnt remove and the stickers clearly arent original but still good condition for 24yrs old Thumbs Up

Brakes are fitted and bled, as are the new renthal bars and renthal clutch lever. the fork guards are UFO aftermarket like the rest of the plastics, i thought they were original because they were white but it was just vinyl stuck over the top. i think they look much better black....

I bought some passenger pegs off ebay cos i haven't seen them for sale often. They wont be on the bike most of the time because theyre unnecessary weight but at least i know i have a pair in a spares box if i need em

I had an oil leak coming from the oil sensor so I removed and resealed it with silicone shortly after buying the bike but it was still leaking from around the wires as well. the replacement sensors seem to be like hens teeth but I did find a company that sells them for about 45 quid. Ive been told though that the leaking sensor is a common fault for the CRM and i didn't want to replace it with another one only for it to leak again some day, so I decided to remove it and plug the hole instead.https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/59_zpsli7rbirh.jpg

https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/60_zps7egnxrev.jpg

I thought it best to leave the wiring connected in but replaced the sensor with a rubber 'test tube' type bung. Ive put a seal of silicone around it and hit it in tight with a hammer & block of wood... usually after being parked for an hour there are drips of 2 stroke on the floor but 12 hours have passed the bike is still dry underneath so im confident it'll hold.

The paintwork that the previous owner did on the side panels was a bit sh*t so ive redone it.... Smile

As i started to sand, the paint was just scratching off because no primer was even used Rolling Eyes so i just continued to scrape the old paint off
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/62_zps10r13dci.jpg

i sanded the plastic with 400gritt wet and dry to remove the scratches and shiny finish to give the surface a key for the paint to stick to
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/63_zps3qyehzvz.jpg

The missus' masking skills Cool
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/64_zpscig0gzod.jpg

about 5 coats of red plastic primer and sanded with 1500 in between applications
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/65_zps6pvzjap6.jpg

3 coats of satin black
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/66_zpsfh761e9s.jpg

And after 2 coats of lacquer....
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/67_zps0dtkc2na.jpg

i thought these plastics might of been the only original panels but they're dated '89 so theyre either off a mk1 CRM or even a CR... Theres a real triggers broom selection of panels here Laughing

One step forward, two steps back... i fitted the seat and all the plastics but the red frame on the sides, connecting to the white main frame looked 'a bit much' so i removed the frame so that i could paint the tubes black where you can see them under the side panels

i sanded the lacquer back with 400 grit paper and gave them four coats of primer
https://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd404/SeanS91/My%20Motorbikes/69_zpsgbqlmxrn.jpg

three coats of gloss black, no lacquer...

From left to right: '92 CRM guards, UFO guards for 90-98 CR, 2006 CRF guards but restickered... i took a chance with the CRF guards not really knowing whether they'd fit but all 3 models are similar and pretty much interchangable with a little persuasion. they still need to be trimmed down to fit the supermoto tyres
