A few jobs to do over the winter.

350YPVS. Acquired this a couple of months ago. 8.5k miles, really good condition, never restored. Need to paint the pipes back to original finish, repaint the swing arm and do some touching up on the frame. It could do with some decent brake pads in as well. Also replace a fork seal.

350 race YPVS. Intend to do some hillclimbs on this next year. It was last run in anger in 2009 but last year I 'fettled' the barrels fitted 2mm oversize Wossner pistons and a Banshee spec crank. Need to sort the battery mounting out, get some new race tyres, replace the hardened fuel lines and generally tidy it up a bit.

Probably the biggest project is to rebuild my mates firestorm engine. It lunched the front cylinder valves after the tensioner broke. Fitted a second hand head and manual tensioners but it sounds like a bag of spanners so there is probably more damage. He's got a good bottom end (supposedly) so it's a strip both to make 1 good engine.

Finally the good old Beemer. Check tappets, oil and filter change, wash its lamby seat cover Smile .

I'll try and update as and when I get chance to do something. The Honda engine build might be 'interesting'

Jamesdoe99, as 1999, therefore being 16? Once you get a job, you'll soon find out that a lot of things are way more accessible than they appear now. Wink

RD's are getting rather rare, but it's not impossible to obtain one in alright condition. We are talking £2,000-2,500 here, which is the same money a 10-15 years old sportbike would go for now. It's all about your preferences. Thumbs Up

And clearly classier.

Rhyno was just trying to help and having 99 in your username suggests one of four things..

1. You were born in 1999.
2. You are aged 99.
3. There are 98 other people named James Doe registered on this site.
4. You sell ice-creams for a living.

Option 1 seems the most likely, I'm sure you'll agree.

Anyway, if you're rich then go and buy what you want - an RD350 YPVS. There are plenty out there.

Being older is nothing to be proud of once you hit adulthood. Richer you might be, but then you find RD's expensive, which they are not. Thinking

Had a couple of hours this morning to start stripping the Honda engine. Originally the lad whose bike it is just got a head and didn't want me to fully strip it so I did that with the engine in the frame. It timed up ok but was very clattery so engine out and full strip.
This was the head I replaced a few weeks ago. All the valves bent, one snapped off.

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000444.jpg

Start point.

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000440.jpg

A few bits to take off, give me a smoker anyday Smile

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000443.jpg

Front cylinder looks as was when the head was replaced, marks where the valves hit it originally.

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000442.jpg

Rear cylinder looks normal.

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000441.jpg

So, nothing obvious so far. Think something further in is bent or has moved. We will see.

Afternoon in the garage on the firestorm engine. Looks like the problem might be a bent rod after looking at both pistons at TDC, should have seen it sooner really.

Back cylinder -

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000450.jpg

Front (problem) cylinder -

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000451.jpg

So it wll be a full strip down. Clutch off first -

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000445.jpg

Had a holding tool from another bike, had to drill some more holes where the yellow dots are -

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000447.jpg

Ready to undo -

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000448.jpg

It was 'kin tight! me sat on it, son swinging on it, grandson on the camera -

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000452.jpg

It's off, bent the holder which is made out of 6mm steel plate!

https://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt220/OldGitRacing/P1000453.jpg

Need a M20 bolt now to get the flywheel off, then the starter clutch and cam chains before splitting the cases to get at the crank/rods/pistons. To be continued...

There's 'rich' and there's 'affluent'.
Technically, I'm relatively 'rich', 'cos on the balance sheet, I own more than I owe, but I am far from 'affluent'. & I don't think I have ever been as 'affluent' as when I was a 'kid'; 17 working on building sites, cash rolled in, and bills didn't... I could afford a brand new RD350YPVS back then.... I couldn't afford a second hand one that came in kit form, these days! This has nothing to do with the 'appreciation' and 'classic' status the things have acquired, it is to do with the difference between 'rich' and 'affluent'!
