After not having a bike for 2 years, My father in law has just given me this, he planned to turn it into a track bike but he can't be arsed.

I'm gonna be just getting it going as cheaply as possible. Tart it up and stuff.. Anyway, pics.

Its complete and was told it was running when it was stored (in a leaking shed 10 years ago). Carbs are seized, no idea if the engine is.

Very Happy

mines been around the clocks and gets ridden pretty much every day.

if you ride it hard, keep an eye on oil levels, it seems they do use oil due to a design flaw in the piston/piston rings.
front brake bobins tend to go slack as well.
good luck with the carbs, spars for those are tricky to come by.
plenty of other engine casing fit if you drop it though.
digital ignitor do have a thing of going up in smoke at times too.
fuse box sit in a bad place and the contact tend to corrode and cause issues.
bandit 600 speedo cable works fine, same as early rear shocks

Has anyone got a wiring diagram for this? I've found a few but they are all slightly different, this is a 1989 but can't find a diagram for that model year. Thanks

Carbs will need rebuilding, use Litetek seal kit and make sure they are surgically clean. Also will probably need plugs as well to even have a chance of starting.

GK73A carb tops liberate more power.

I only have 92-99.

is it helps my bike doesn't match any of the wiring diagrams either and so far as I can tell is a 94.

but the manual has some wiring diagrams titled as "other models". it would be helpful if you new the country of origin. twin disk models were never imported to the UK by Suzuki as its definitely a grey import.

What is it that you are having issues with?

Is a Japanese model, the cdi has the green wire for the 112mph restriction.

The wiring is sorted, had to strip back the loom and sort it then retape it all. It was mainly previous owner bodges.. The usual spade connectors and twisted wires, wrong colours etc.

Just waiting for a rebuild kit for the carb, but might need some new carb tops as they are cracked.

Possibly one of the worst bikes I've owned and ridden. I'd not be able to score it less than a GS500 but it comes close. I'd rather ride a mobility scooter.

Hope the build goes well.

Good brakes and chassis, crap build quality, slow compared to it's GK73a brother. Mine was unreliable and tried to burn me alive in a filling station which was the last straw.

its funny, the gs500 and bandt 400 are 2 of the most fun bikes ive ever owned,

loved the revvy-ness of the bandit, and the bomb proof engine of the 500 was good for winter reliability.

horses for courses.

Yep my gs500 just kept going, think its still about now, sold it due to needing a timing chain. My current 400 is coming up on 110000km and sees the red line almost daily.

The 400 only let me down once, 200 miles from home. The gs500 never let me down. Both bikes use oil, specially when ridden hard, keeping an eye on the oil level is essential. Saw a guy go through 2 engines on a gs due to not keeping the oil topped up - this is purely a user issue and really the bikes fault.

i bought mine for £500 with 50000miles on it, was at 85000 miles when i gave it to a work mate when i went back to new zealand, he still has it and its still running fine.
never had a single mechanical issue with it at all, had to repair wiring weekly with all the salt corroision, only left me stranded once when a mis-used chain broke on me.

one of the few bikes i'd own again,

Not had chance to do anything with the bike at all until the last few days, took the tank and side panels to work.
Upon handing the tank I discovered it had a leak. Only to find this monstrosity. A piece of tin stuck on with liquid metal.

Thought it could be made into a decent repair after a quick zap with the welder, removed the plate to clean up the steel for welding to find it was made from an old coke can Evil or Very Mad

Hopefully should have time to weld it up and get the tank in primer tomorrow.

Welded the tank today, not the prettiest but the seat hides most, what the seat doesn't hide a tank protector will.

Can only do bits of the bike as of when there is a few hrs spare at work, so it's been slow. Took a proper look at the back of the tank and realised that it looked a bit shit, so rubbed down the back and ran a skim of filler over and went over the tank again with some high build primer.

Does anybody know if gsxr400 heads will fit the bandit head. None vvti model.

Been busy with family life and work so decided to get my brother on stripping the bike down for me so I can work on bits at a time. Big mistake, he's butchered the exhaust ports, mainly the raised bosses where the flange bolts to, ones sheard off. Took the engine to work and stripped the head off, I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the cams and how clean the engine was inside.

Might be able to salvage the head but cba fucking about drilling and tapping if I could just get a head cheap enough.

I thought you would have had difficulty with engine mounts due to the different frame types but apparently:

https://forums.banditalley.net/index.php?topic=9365.0

I guessed the cams would be a different profile, and carb sizes were different between some models but other than that they seem the same...

Join up to some GSF/GSX-R forums, but keep us posted on here as it's interesting.

Like most Bandit 400s it's really not worth the aggro. It'll run fine for 3 days then break.

Gone over the head and it's probably best to get a new one. Everything else looks okay though apart from one rocker.

https://i.imgur.com/mRhOtjJ.jpg
This head is a 1990 gsxr. Look at the rockers compared to mine below, this head is cheap as chips but unsure if the rockers will swap over. Anyone have any ideas?

That head isn't from 1990 GSXR if it's got locknut tappets. The GK76 models from 90 to 96 run shims.

Yeah the one for sale is shimmed. Are the valve spacings all the same etc? Could just transfer everything from my head over so it would be lockouts.

Ended up just drilling and tapoing new studs into the head, also got a new follower. I dont have any ohots as i forgot as i was fitting it. It seems to be worn in the same place as mine, although nowhere near as bad and the plating it still on.

Really dead at work so had the opportunity to take some bits in. The back wheel was shagged, its not the original wheel as its factory white that someone has just sprayed black over, no primer or anything. Front was ok, still gave it lick of paint though. Yes, the tyres will be getting changed.

Forks wasnt bad at all but gave them a coat too.

https://i.imgur.com/uYlPhnM.jpg

All the disc bolts played nicley apart from one which was seized and rounded. Had to cut a flat into it and hammer a t45 torx into to. Must remember not too use my ratchet as a hammer though.

Tried some electrosis too on the remaining front dosc bolts. Its still bubbing so no pics of the finoshed result yet.
