So the head gasket failed, lots of stuff damaged , start looking for a complete engine to replace the broken one ?

Seen them costing around £350 complete, far cheaper than hondas prices !

Did water get past the rings into the sump ? There might be more damage !

no the water didn't get past.

Intake Valve 3 was open when it was sat for 7 years, so it's water from condsation build up leaking in. I'm assuming that is. So bottom should be good. However I'm guessing the crank case needs striping if I wanted it reboring anyway.

Oh , was the airbox off the bike?

How could water get in ? To me it looks like the bike had a leaking head gasket,
this caused a miss fire and the bike was stored.....

Have you costed what a set of pistons rings head gasket costs ?

Also drain the sump, that could be even worse....getting a replacement engine is often cheaper/ better.... Very Happy

I the first owner that's how I have a rough idea. It was in ibiza under a plastic sheet I think the weather gets bad in winter. Waters defo got in from the airbox check the first pictures.

The oils long gone. It was perfectly clean. So I have to split the crank case basically. Or buy a compete.

So where are you ? There is 3 engines on UK ebay at the moment....

(Being a lover of obsolete 2 strokes I have as many spare engines as I can find)

The worst bike the British ever made , the ajs 410 stormer , it single handedly bankrupted NVT.......

To be honest I'd like to fix this engine if I can. Why I wanted this project to learn at the same time. I'm in Derbyshire Glossop.

I've seen worse engines be salvaged with a simple honing tool..... Take the barrels off, and give them a good clean. Buy a cheap honer and watch a YouTube vid on how to use it..... I personally use duck oil when lightly honing, but you'll probably have to use proper engine oil to do that (buy cheap shit car stuff just for the hone!)

As for the Pistons, buy new rings and send all 4 off to have the tops vapour blasted

Oh, and for the top end.

Buy a valve Spring compressor and get the valves out..... Lay them out the way you removed them! They must go back in the same port. Then, one by one, put them lightly in a pillar drill and use scotchbrite, wet and dry, or wire wool to clean them up. Again, take your time. Use plenty of duck oil and patience. Avoid the seat area of the valve as much as possible.

For the head, it might be time to change the seats, but if not an inexpensive valve lapping kit and YouTube will be your friend here. Once the heads rebuilt flip it over, spray some soapy water on the backs of the valves and blast compressed air up the ports. If you see any bubbles then you need to lap more.....

Had a few early blades 92-96 and spent 15 years riding like an absolute tw@ on them most of the time. Only motor work I needed to do was replace the coolant /oil cooler thing by the oil filter as they are prone to corrosion if ridden thru the winter salt roads and a cam chain tensioner which is a simple 2 bolt job....failing that it was just clutch plates and service items but every single one from the 92-2000 killed its reg rectifier and 2 of them also took out the genny coils!

Yes. The whole section where the cylinders are. The crank case itself is the very bottom section of the engine where the crank(duh), gearbox, and clutch lives. Then there's the cylinders/barrels, then the cylinder head.....

The section will slide off over the Pistons...... Use a bit of duck oil to help them slide off over them. Wd40 will work too, I just use so much that duck oil is cheaper and better in my opinion......

Remember that you can't replace just the upper crankcase/barrels. The uppers & lowers are machined as a matching set and need to be replaced together.

Probably easier to turn it upside down and remove the lower case then lift the gearbox shafts and crank out of the upper.

well everything to repair the damage is on the way. So when I get time I'll be striping it down and prepping for honing etc etc. Smile

As I said, for the honing use some engine oil! I've done it a fiat amount of times, so I use duck oil to make the process faster (less lubrication - more abrasion, obviously!)

Okay case is apart!, it took hours to polish the barrel to get the rust out to remove the piston but its done phew.

No damage at all just a little bit of rust that dropped through Thumbs Up

I'm not 100% confident that it will hone because it feels badly pitted but we shall see next time.

Not at all. The crosshatch will actually aid oil delivery to the skirt. It does seem like you're not using as much lube as needed. Story of my life. Are you using engine oil or duck oil? I'd hone a bit more!

To be honest I'll hone a bit more then and hope it's okay. it still cheaper way to go. Don't think it's worth a re bore, more then it's worth.

Hi I`m a bit late to this topic but I stripped down an engine, pretty much in the same condition ,the cylinder head was in the same state but what i did (and I know this sounds daft )was to put the whole cylinder head in a tank of distilled vinegar(20 ltrs) and leave it for a couple of weeks, it lifted the crud and rust easily and did`nt eat into the metal , sorry a bit late for you
