PostPosted: 22:38 - 12 Mar 2016    Post subject: 92 fireblade Reply with quote

Just got myself a lovely 1992 fireblade. This will be my first full rebuild. The engine to the shame of the last owner has got water damage while it's been sat under a sheet for round 7 years.

Any tips, do and don't are very welcome.

Also when removing the engine any recommended stands or methods? Thumbs Up

Nice! I do believe that model and that colour scheme was one of my bedroom pinup bikes as a kid.

Love the early nineties bikes

Do - replace that engine. Don't bother with a rebuild.

Don't - make it look shit.

I won't be touching the colour at all its perfect as is. Its all about the engine and tidying it up and replacing all presihed rubber parts. I'm going to see if I can bore out the head.

Lovely thing that, and they are still very quick bikes in modern company. Looking forward to seeing the progress. I have an RRV in mint condition and it is a blast.

The car jack idea is good.

Make sure you have someone to help steady the engine as you lower it on the jack.
The blade engine is pretty heavy and from memory wants to roll to the left as it is being lowered from the frame.
Caused me a few anxious moments as I dropped mine on my own.
I used two trolley jacks to get it back in. Makes lining up the mounts so much easier when you can control the front and rear heights independently.

One other thing, you will need a special castle type socket to back off a lock nut that secures an engine mount bolt, conversely you also need it to lock the nut up. It certainly makes things easier anyway.

Ebay item 111181448574 or search Honda CBR900RR Engine Mounting Nut Socket.

CMSNL shows these as items 20 (lock nut) and 15 in the frame breakdown. Do not confuse it with items 19 and 14 which from memory are for the swingarm.

Item 15 is a big allen bolt that simply pushes up on to the crankcase, it doesn't physically bolt in to the crankcase.

Only quick to modern standards if your "modern standards" is 15 year old 600cc sports bikes.

No cunt needs or can use the 124bhp of a 92 blade on the roads or needs more power within the limitations of highway use. Blades are great tough as fuck bikes, and no one with a 180mph litre bike who looks down on an early blade can use what they have got unless on the track and they really know how to ride bike well.

The thread about the GPZ900r is about another great cool bike with again more power than anyone needs for road only use, but I can see the handling and tyre and brake limitations for fast Road riding today, especially if mates are riding much more modern stuff.

Or mythical magical 3pot machine of dreams from Hinkley maybe? Wink

Seriously I've had bikes up to 110bhp ish, and ridden a couple of bikes with a bit more power still, Blackbird/CBR954RR.

I never found much over 100ish mph on uk roads necessary or relevant to my needs. I've never had a bike that was too underpowered to overtake safely, and I never found the need to be able to crack a throttle open at 130mph and out accelerate plain slow sluggish bikes under 150bhp on a straight or feel like I have a huge dong by doing so.

I've struggled with the concept that a pretty average at best road rider could be quicker point to point within the limitations of road riding and retaining your license on a 200bhp bike than a 100bhp bike or even a far lower powered bike.

When you see two up CB500's banked right over scraping the pegs on the twisties, and passing 04 Fireblades etc, you think what is all this extra power doing for people?

I do firmly believe that if you take away all the electronics on newish 200bhp bikes, that they would be far slower and harder to ride fast than a lower powered bike like say a GSXR750 SRAD, and give you no more enjoyment at best?

When I did mine, the problem is trying to keep the frame still while you lift the engine. I put a couple of strong blocks under the engine, took the wheels off and lifted the frame up off of the engine. Found in easier to fiddle the frame down over the engine when it went back in.

Putting a big fuck-off grin on their faces Very Happy Laughing

I'm having a hoot on the "mythical, magical 3 pot machine of dreams from Hinkley", but took the Fazer out for a quick blast the other day and that rush is just addictive! Whereas with the Striple I'm normally seeing speeds around 90 to a ton, the Fazer just steams past 120 in the blink of an eye and keeps going Twisted Evil I ain't knockin it. Mr. Green

Good progress today 10 bolts away from head removable. I lacked the tool doh. But so far it's intake valves on 3 that was stuck down.

So the head gasket failed, lots of stuff damaged , start looking for a complete engine to replace the broken one ?

Seen them costing around £350 complete, far cheaper than hondas prices !

Did water get past the rings into the sump ? There might be more damage !
