Currently the carbs are apart. Should be able to have another go when I can get down next. I believe it was flooded first attempt and one shut off valve in the foat bowl failed, bloody fuel all over the shop. Laughing

I've uploaded a video of last times attempt with the fuel leak. defo flooded that try, but it wants to go! Twisted Evil

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94ZYW0pnH9A

I drained the battery and had no time to pop back another day to charge it. So todays attempt was no joy as battery is still flat, however I rebuilt the carbs and put in some new o rings, checked the cutoffs etc. no more leak Smile

While battery is charging I cleaned up the front round the instruments all sprayed and cleaned. also run foil over the chrome.

lovely.

My sphincter used to work overtime when I had to remove those ladders to do the valve clearances on my 90's 'blades! Probably not helped by the excessive warnings in the Haynes manual about snapping them.

Still not started. Turns out the fuel pump had stopped but i'm not 100% convinced it was fully running, I tested the starter relay and yeah its foobar. stuffed a wire in to bypass it, away it went. I'm expecting this to keep happening till I get it all!

https://www.shaunboundy.co.uk/project/22ndmay/20160522_204354.jpg

Well with another attempt the battery drained, so I stripped the breaks.

Also if there is any other reasons why the kill switch is completely been overridden i'd love to no.

Okay brakes are done, only thing really left is tires after engine is going. The rims are really nice to Smile

Now I've reached an interesting point, I have 3 major problems to which two I believe I may of created.

1. I finally got a part I needed to convert a cheap compression tester down to 10mm. The results was very poor.

Spec = 171 Psi / 11.8 Bar

1 = 90 psi / 4 bar
2 = 116 psi / 8 bar
3 = 90 psi / 4 bar
4 = N/A Not tested ran out time, but i'm guessing poor.

Ouch Question

I'm guessing clearly not enough lapping on the valves seats or clearances?. Any other info welcome or advice here please.

2. I have no spark electrics are a mess, I'm thinking still stop switch as its does not kill starter motor. not sure at all still testing.

3. Lastly the gear issue. It is not disengaging in neutral the light is on the dash. But without running the engine and testing I'm not 100% sure.

So its an interesting situation I'm gonna have to remove head again that much is clear. But i'm trialing with the other 2 issues

Now the question of the other of play, what I'm hoping for is if the engine will run?

Even with that low compression for now?

If so then I could test gear problem and clear wire loom.

What do you think?? Neutral

If all that makes sence! Mr. Green

Valve clearances first, then re-lap valves. Could the lack of spark be related to the neutral light fault? Does it need to be in neutral to start normally?

Hi regards the bridging in the kill switch, could be that whoever you got the bike off had the same problem with no spark and decided to isolate the kill switch, could be they isolated with the wrong 2 wires and it needs to be re-done to isolate it properly, just a thought Thumbs Up

Gonna have to test every switch, relay, diode.

I think order of play is clear, get electrics going then look into compression, finally this wired gear issue.

As for kill switch, It was running fine before it was sat for years. Just old and unloved. Neutral

I'm sure I figure it out with persistence! Thumbs Up

pour a small amount of oil into each bore through the spark plug hole (not enough to risk hydraulic locking the engine) and then do the test again.

If the results stay the same, its valves (clearances or lapping) and if it dramatically improves then it's rings.

I've got very close it's like puffing a little here and there. Low compression?

I would still expect it to fire on that compression, did you set the valve clearances after lapping the valves?

In general I would try to avoid getting the head off again. Let it run for a bit and bed down before chasing problems, they may sort themselves out.

Well my god amazing news!

https://youtu.be/5Dt1J3P9tYA

its alive! however very bad news at the same time. The gear issue is not going away its gone wrong. My folt somewhere on reassembly it kills the engine in second gear up Embarassed

Thinking about it I mite be able to sort the issue from under the bike in the oil pan access just by pulling the gear changer out.

It's nice reading a resto from someone that's finding their feet and is honest about it. I'm genuinely interested this, and really want to see you succeed. Also, my mates dad had a maroon one of these, he used to go out riding with people nearly half his age on brand new kit and he used to leave them all behind.

Good luck to you sir, keep the posts coming!

Thumbs Up

Nope, please spell it out for idiots like me who have no real idea how a gear box works? Laughing

Although about the clutch bolts, do you not own a torque wrench?

Snapped bolts aside good job sir! I would never have attempted a project like this...
