I bought a FZS1000 Fazer at the beginning of the year with the intention of converting it to a naked machine, just to be different! A bit unusal as although I believe they made a naked version of the 600cc Fazer, The thou only ever came out the factory with a fairing. It has taken a while as i've had to make a few brackets for various items - using only basic hand tools!

I just thought that I would share a few photos of the process.........

So, This is the bike when I first put it in my garage :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/IMG-20160121-WA0000_zpsjpbn9dxn.jpg

I soon started stripping the fairing off :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160201_192807_zpsnyyqyhhk.jpg

Note the Reg/Rec on the right hand side by the fuel tank, on the standard bracket it lived within the fairing. This was the first bracket that I had to make.

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160201_192802_zps0bz30k0b.jpg

I used a small piece of aluminium to make a small bracket to fit it close to the frame as you can see here:

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160322_200624_zpsaacxwkit.jpg

Next up was the speedo. Again, that originally lived within the fairing and this produced a bit more of a problem, as it was never intended to be mounted outside of the fairing. I got a template of the speedo and obtained a 4mm thick aluminium road sign to make the bracket.

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160312_111951_zpsjvkiqeej.jpg

With only hand tools, it took a while to cut out and file all edges, but the end result was this:

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160312_112124_zpslaxtkypo.jpg

Trail mock mount :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160312_112449_zps0fupuitf.jpg

As you can see, the bracket is still straight and has not had the angle put on to it yet :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160312_112459_zpsxhlmpy5h.jpg

Rubbed down all the road sign paint :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160325_182057_zps3xwkzyr2.jpg

Into a vice and bent to the correct angle, then spray painted. I used some rubber inserts for the speedo bolt holes to reduce the vibration transferred to the speedo :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160407_163105_zpsctxptywg.jpg

Mock fit of the speedo in the new bracket :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160407_163258_zpsd3mixmml.jpg

Before putting it together, I wasn't happy with the brake pipes. Look at the one heading from the master cylinder to the left (right in the photo) caliper. Not only was it tight, but it was actually rubbing in the steer lock on the frame. Needless to say, I replaced these!

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160321_073307_zpseuym5brn.jpg

I bought a universal 7" round headlight, indicators, some headlight brackets, mirrors and then mounted the speedo on its new bracket. It took a bit of wiring, but got there! Also replaced fuel tank with a black one :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160416_190424_zpspqvh4axa.jpg

Then made a new bracket for the horn. Getting there now! :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160416_193448_zps7c33fbui.jpg

View from rear of the bike, speedo seems at the right angle. :

https://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc378/dannymassive/FZS1000/20160423_161441_zpsyrlv653a.jpg

The end result.........

Bit of ingenuity and some effort, top marks. I never liked the faired models.

Cheers Tommy Thumbs Up

Whilst it is not to everyone's taste, I do prefer a naked bike to a faired bike. I'm very pleased with how the bike looks now.

I've recently got a 1st gen Fazer 600 and was toying with the idea of this, that does look tidy!

Always preferred a traditional headlight on most bikes. Yours is cool and I like it more because not only was it self done it was done with basic tools and materials instead of spending a lot of money.

The pointy FZS1000 Fazer fairing is soughtafter by people with the square headlight fairing as a replacement, so be sure to stick it on Fleabay!

Do it! The cost of the conversion is absolute minimal. If you ever change your mind you can switch back within an hour or so.

Fair play that's a good effort. Needs something at the back of the clocks though Thinking

I don't mind that - I might look at painting that forward-pointing spar of the frame (by the reg-rec) black as this clearly was never meant to be on show and might clean up the look from the side.

It is far better than many a 'street-fighter' though. Thumbs Up

That's another advantage of doing a naked conversion like this. I could very easily change the headlight to whatever I want, as and when I want. It's so easy to customize a naked.

Cheers Paul, glad you agree!

c_dug wrote:

Yes, If I had spent a day on it I could have easily done it in one shot. Gathering materials and getting child-free spare time is what has taken this project so long. As said, I could swap back to faired within an hour or so now and now that I have made the brackets I could swap back to naked just as quick as and when I please.

These clocks were never meant to be mounted outside of the fairing, hence the wiring from behind. Going forward I may box the wiring in, but for now (since the photo was taken) I have used some flexible conduit to hide the wiring. Looks much neater now.

Thanks Weasley. I too think it looks better than most with some of these new "modern" universal lights that are available these days.

As Avid Merrion would say - It's proper bo, i'll tell thee!
