|
|
Two GSXR's!
After a getting a taste for track days I decided that I wanted a cheap track hack, which was also road legal.
Last night I picked this up:
https://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh163/adam673673/Mobile%20Uploads/20160609_224355_zpscf7mfbt2.jpg
It's a k1 gsxr 600. 38k ish miles. 3 previous owners. Some sporadic history. Ohlins damper, carbon akrapovic exhaust and the consumables seem in reasonable order.
It's been unused for a couple of months and has no MOT.
Cosmetically it's not great, crack in the front fairing around the headlight, ripped seat, scuffs on right fairing and crash bung from a slow spill and both front indicators stems snapped.
I had to fight the spiders off of it and de cobweb it. Dirty is an understatement. Be interesting to see the condition under the grime on the wheels and swing arm.
I did plan on sticking it straight in for an mot after getting home and changing the indicators but i got back later than expected in the dark.
Hitting the first roundabout I thought the wheel bearings had gone, it felt like the front wheel was going where ever it wanted and just horrible. I needed petrol so I checked the tyre pressure just in case, front was 24psi. Upped it to 32 but it made little difference.
It dawned on me a little while later to adjust the damper, it was on the loosest setting. Turned it round to about half ( 9 clicks or so) and huge improvement. I fiddled with it a couple more times and found I was much happier on the tight side (around 3 clicks). Bike felt much more solid, capable and planted.
It's currently got reversed gearing (1 up 5 down) and the rear shock is on its hardest/highest setting. I'm on my tippy toes!
Problems I noticed on the way home:
Main beam bulb is blown
Speedo reading is intermitant. Sometimes it's fine, other times it just read 0mph.
I want to get this road legal asap to do a few track days before the winter when a full strip will be happening.
Plan for now:
Change engine oil/filter
Check what air filter it has and replace or clean
Change spark plugs
Fit new bulbs (might haveone spare)
Fit new indicators (already purchased)
Change the gearing back to 1 down 5 up as it's just confusing
Check the speed sensor for loose/corrodedNess. Replace if necessary.
Replace ripped seat
Clean and inspect chain. Might need replacement as looking dry and brown.
Give the bike a damn good clean.
Mot
For winter:
Check clearances
Pads and brake fluid, possibly braided hoses
Decide what I'm doing with fairings
Maybe a few cans of Hammerite to tidyou any bits up.
Riding this makes my k6 1000 feel tiny. It feels a lot wider. I also forgot how gutless 600s are up to 10k.
More / better pictures will be coming.

Nice bike! Liking what they've done with the indicators as oposed to actually replacing them i hope that level of incompetent work hadnt repeated itself elsewhere on the bike |

If you're going the fix the fairing route. Might as well plastic weld them.
Soldering iron. Some ABS rods. Job done.
Can even use acetone to melt ABS chunks and make a thick and slurry/glue. ____________________ yzf 600r |

That poor bike!
Excellent work bringing it back from the brink.
Like the shape too.

New (used) speedo sensor fitted and a quick turn of the back wheel confirms this is now working.
Progress!
Still waiting for the service stuff. ____________________ || Past: 1991 Kawasaki ZXR 250 ~ 2003 Honda CBR 600 F Sport ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1999 Yamaha R1 ~ 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R J ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1998 Honda VTR1000F Firestorm ~ K1 GSXR 600 Track bike ~ K6 GSXR 1000 ~ 2006 Speed Triple 1050 || Current: 2005 R1 https://www.adrucore.co.uk |

Phoned m&p at 9am. Got told that even though I went through to the ebay option on the phone, he could not help me find my order or tell if it's anywhere near dispatching and to use ebay to email them.
Emailed them and waited a while for a response. No response came so I rang the number again and asked if I could cancel your order as I really need the stuff and can get a guaranteed delivery for Thursday elsewhere. Was told that he can not cancel it and I need to contact them via ebay (same bloke).
Left another message via ebay that I wanted to cancel the order as I had yet to have any notification of them sending out the order. This was about 10am.
At 1pm I still had not heard nothing so proceeded to order the stuff from sportsbikedirect or what ever it's called. Quickly got an email saying that they only have 2 and not 3 1ltr bottles of oil (the 4ltr was out of stock on the site). Phoned them and changed oil to a slightly more expensive one (5 litres for 24 quid). Get email confirming change and that I will have delivery tomorrow.
4.30pm get an message from eBay from m&p saying my items had been dispatched in the morning (nothing updated on ebay to say so) and that I would have to return the items for a refund the tracking says it was not picked up till gone 5pm from themselves. Got a notification at 9pm saying my stuff had been dispatched on ebay.
So tomorrow I've got 2 service kits arriving damn my impatientNess. Not sure whether to keep the spares for which ever gsxr needs servicing next or refuse the delivery from m&p.
In lighter news mot is booked for Friday morning ____________________ || Past: 1991 Kawasaki ZXR 250 ~ 2003 Honda CBR 600 F Sport ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1999 Yamaha R1 ~ 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R J ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1998 Honda VTR1000F Firestorm ~ K1 GSXR 600 Track bike ~ K6 GSXR 1000 ~ 2006 Speed Triple 1050 || Current: 2005 R1 https://www.adrucore.co.uk |

Looks new! So now my question is of course, what did you soak it in? |

As mixture of seamen, hot soapy water and bicarb soda. Didn't really soak it as such, a few rinses under the hot tap, shook it about in the hot soap water, repeated a few times and then did the same with the soda. Could have got it better with more soda and more effort. ____________________ || Past: 1991 Kawasaki ZXR 250 ~ 2003 Honda CBR 600 F Sport ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1999 Yamaha R1 ~ 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R J ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1998 Honda VTR1000F Firestorm ~ K1 GSXR 600 Track bike ~ K6 GSXR 1000 ~ 2006 Speed Triple 1050 || Current: 2005 R1 https://www.adrucore.co.uk |

Thanks Az, i'll have a look for those!
Right, todays update:
Both packages arrive from M&P and Sportsbikeshop, figured ill keep both as the k6 uses the same parts and will probably be done again this winter.
Though i would fit the M&P kit (came with oil filter, plugs and oil advertised to fit the k1 GSXR 600s) Fitted 3 of the 4 plugs in the k1 and then realised the plug cap does not fit the damn plug. Quick look at the packaging states Champion 8698 plugs and they have a different cap to the NGK CR9E plugs. Not happy. Have fired off an email to M&P to see what they have to say.
Luckily i have the correct plugs from Sportsbike shop so correct plugs, oil and filter all fitted. Had my 6 year old today so she gave me a hand;
https://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh163/adam673673/Mobile%20Uploads/20160616_121815_zpsdvcfrid5.jpg
Wired in the other indicator and fitted the relay. Noticed one of the rear indicators now wasn't working a quick check of the bulb revealed nothing wrong. Jiggled the wire and bingo, 4 correctly flashing bulbs.
Tested all the other lights and realised the front brake switch was only working intermittent too. Another bodge found;
https://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh163/adam673673/Mobile%20Uploads/20160616_125307_zpscmguuhkl.jpg
I did wonder why there was an extra cable (not routed properly) coming from the front brake. For some reason the original brake switch wire has been cut off.
Couldn't find any spade connectors in the garage so i've (poorly) soldered these back together and wrapped in tape. Plugged it back in and now works flawlessly.
Only other issue I noticed was that the akrapovic is blowing at the bottom end of the can near the rivets. Didn't notice this till my hand caught a slight draft in that area. I definitely didn't cover it in tape for tomorrow mornings MOT

Looking forward to giving it a blast tomorrow, hopefully I've not missed anything and it flies through.
And my sperm sitting on the K6, just because;

Looking good mate.
Might be an advisory/fail on the missing chain guard on the MOT? EDIT seems it's just an advisory. ____________________ My Flickr |
