You all do know that if Russia decides to lob a nuke it will be coming here.

We are big enough to be a threat but not America or the EU and the yanks wont let us throw a few tridents back.

If Scotland gets its independence from the UK then we will give the UK all its nuclear deterrent back.

Our coast is pummelled on a constant basis by tidal waves....

https://americanmilitarynews.com/2022/05/russian-state-tv-simulates-nuclear-strike-that-would-obliterate-uk/

“The explosion of this thermonuclear torpedo close to Britain’s coast will cause a gigantic wave tsunami wave up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) high,” Kiselyov said. “This wave also carries extreme doses of radiation. Having passed over the British Isles, it will turn whatever might be left of them into a radioactive desert unfit for anything for a long time.”

Well, that’s Iceland gone too. The wave, albeit reduced in size, would reach the continental coast also, maybe even the USA? And the radiation. It’s odd that state media is so gung-ho when I’d imagine ordinary Russians would be horrified at the idea and must surely know that wouldn’t be the end of it.

Do not appeal to common sense, this is Putin we're talking about Smile

That being said if the Kremlin PR department was running the show the whole world would have been a nuclear cinder a year ago. "The mouth is writing cheques the body can't cash."

It's true. Tidal waves are caused by the tides which are a constant process. I suspect you actually mean tsunami.

This is based on a speculative theory that a 100 megaton device exploded 8km off of a coast would cause a tsunami. The largest bomb detonated to date was the 50 megaton tsar bomba and although a 100 megaton device is possible it's hardly likely. Russian scaremongering at best.

Oh and we're still a NATO member. It would be suicide for Russia to attempt any nuclear strike on any NATO member.

If you think any other country will back lobbing nukes at Russia if they lob one at us you are increadibly naive. America will posture, threaten, offer to help us rebuild, but they won't risk Russia winding up their ICBM's for anyone. Yes it will kill NATO but in will mean the USA isn't shovelling millions of dead bodies from New York or Denver and that's way more important to them than our poxy little island.

NATO has never been put to the test. It's like MAD. Works until someone presses the button. Then let's see who's willing to play chicken.

The TSAR bomb was considered a waste of time because a good proportion of its destructive power just shot out into space.

If you think it wouldn't trigger immediate retaliation from NATO forces then you're incredibly naive...

The fireball was 8km in diameter but then they did detonate it at a very high altitude (4km) so it really didn't reach space although the proposed 100 megaton device may well have. The mushroom cloud did reach the mesosphere though. It wasn't a practical weapon more a 'look what we can do' demonstration of capability.

Nuclear retaliation? The only countries that will ever launch nukes are dictatorships. USA will never launch unless their own country is attacked. Hence why Russia would hit here. It's shows they are willing to launch but gives the US a way out as alliances last until the bullets/rockets start. Do you really think the US would risk Russian nukes landing on American soil if they can limit it to Birmingham or Manchester being atomised.

Once one NATO member is attacked it's only a matter of time before the rest would be. NATO policy is attack one of us and you attack all of us.

NATO policy was set up when it was the west v the east, an all or nothing MAD. Todays scenario is completely different. If Russia nuked Brum I am totally sure Berlin, Ankara, Washington etc. would be ecstatic about risking everything to support a nuclear response. It might go conventional, with the US putting troops on the ground but I actually doubt that. NATO has never been tested and I very much doubt it would survive past the first mushroom cloud as countries disassociate themselves so they don't get the next one.

But we will never know who is right until it happens. If they nuke Milton Keynes I won't be around to say 'I told you so'. If they nuke Kirkwall, you can die happy knowing they didn't mean it to land there. Cool

This new weapon is supposedly undetectable at launch. Unless the Russians claimed responsibility there would be weeks of ‘investigations’ and accusations all round (like the pipeline detonation, or the Novichok poisonings) until the moment for violent retaliation had passed. There would be fighting later when nations arrived to claim the island as their own though!

The traditional targets of Bath (now Bristol), London, Plymouth, Brize Norton and Faslane would be hit first.

Why, when a mysterious tsunami (or ‘tidal wave’, as we used to call them Wink ) would be more effective, and at first deniable?

Pretty sure the French would be loosening their nukes the instant it happened.
