Gave me an idea...

How about having a different icon for th post ratings?

Say a thumb pointing up/down by different amounts?

That way people can seperate the idea of post ratings and karma a bit; as at the moment a lot of people seem to see rating a post as dropping/raising somone's karma, rather than just rating that post.

I'd expect then people lots of the time (when using Thumbs Down ratings) would just use which was the thumb pointing down the most so it had the most effect on whoever. Having the ratings all having different thumb pointing up/down icons would make it more apparent what effect the rating will have on that persons karma level and so the most Thumbs Down ones would get used more than the very slightly Thumbs Down ones if people know what score they all give.

Sorry, I'm talking about the icon by the post, which is a greed/red dot, like the karma system. Thinking about it, this would naturaly associate post ratings with karma.

The state of the thumb would be similar to the colour of the dot at the moment.
