A mate of mine has just bought an ER-5. But he is unsure about his Fuel tap.
It has 3 positions...

On
PRI
RES

Now it has been running all day long on the "PRI" setting.

Can anybody shed some light on what this stands for and where is the "OFF" position...

Cmon Dodsi...

I would imagine the PRI to mean primary, ie. main - obviously res=Reserve.

Pri is short for 'prime'. After the fuel runs out you turn it to prime to get the fuel back in the system, then you turn it to resrve. AFAIK.

(That's what I was told anyway).

copied from somewhere else:

That sort of tap has no 'Off' position, it's called a vacuum tap and the diaphragm is sucked open by a vacuum via a thin black pipe from one of the carbs. The Prime position by-passes the diaphragm and allows fuel to flow under gravity for times when the carbs have been emptied - strip-down, run out of gas etc.

It's possible for the vacuum pipe to perish and split or become dislodged, or the diaphragm to stop working. In these cases the petrol would not therefore reach the carbs.

I'd suggest you try running it on Prime for a short while - warm-up, ride round the block for example - to see if that cures it. If it does then we know where to start looking.

It should be noted that leaving the tap on Prime may, given a combination of faults, cause the engine to flood and fill with gas. Obviously this is very bad, so if setting it to Prime does work, turn the tap back to 'On' when you park it as you'll effectively be turning it Off.

^^^

Like they say.

PRI stands for prime and there is no off position. I tend to leave mine on 'on' and fill up every 100 miles or when it gets to the red.

I'm surprised the thing actually ran on prime....I would have thought it would have jsut flooded the thing.

Paul?? 100 miles??? I could ride my er5 to the red line and wouldn't get less than 110 or 120. 150 riding normally!

100 miles would get it to just before the red line. And i use it everyday but the journey is only 4miles. So it gets started and stopped alot. But the new ER5 has already done 100mile and still has a quater of the tank left Confused

Well, for a start , the fuel gauge on ER-5s lie. When mine hit the red I could go at least another 50miles or so.

Yes - don't run the bike on PRIME, just leave it in the ON position Thumbs Up
