Im looking at buying a mates 2000 r6 cheap, he wheelies it like a bastard and his 2nd gear has gone twice now, how much is a new second gear likely to set me back? How much life can you expect?

Is this a common problem? cheers

Leon

yes i am a gear cutter

it will cost you more to get a company to make you one as you pay for the time it takes and heat treat as well

its cheaper to buy OE as they make them by the thousands

Hi

Problem is not the gear, it is the engine strip / rebuild that will be required to fit it. Just the gear, gaskets and sundries (oil, coolant, etc) will be around £200 before you spend the time / pay the labour for doing the job.

All the best

Keith

but do you do any one-offs??

I'm planning on putting the YZF750 6 speed box in my spare thunderace engine, but 1st and 6th ratios are the same as the standard 1st and 5th ratios that come with the 'ace.

If I was to get a couple of gears custom made, and ran a higher sprocket ratio, it would give me more akin to the current gearing with a 6th, higfher gear which I would find useful when sat on the Mway, or when touring.

is it feasible to get a couple of gears custom made, or are we talking silly money?

You'd be a lot cheaper just raising the size of your front sprocket by one tooth

It would probably be better to have a hunt through the Yamaha parts lists and find suitable standard gears. Basically the same engine is used on the FZ750, FZX750, FZ700, FZR1000, FZR1000 EXUP, FZR750, FZR750 OW01, YZF750, GTS1000, Thunderace and YZF750 / YZF750SP. Good chance that you can source a suitable couple of gears from one of those.

This guy might be worth contacting as he has a wealth of knowledge on the older 5 valve Yamaha engines.

All the best

which will also raise the gearing of 1st..

what I really want is to effectovely keep as close to the ratios I have, and gain a 6th higher gear... an "overdrive" if you will.
