In general terms, what are the characteristic differences between 600cc and 1000cc sport-bikes?

Am I right in thinking the following:

    top speed - 155 mph on a 600cc vs. 186 mph on a 1000cc
    0-60 - low 3 secs on a 600cc vs. high 2 sec on a 1000cc
    gearing - longer gearing on a 1000cc
    torque - 40% higher on a 1000cc
    weight - very similar

So if I'm not bothered about the absolute top speed, then in real terms is there little to seperate them? Or is the accelleration noticibly better on a 1000cc? I also assume a 1000cc will be less affected by carrying a pillion / paniers due to the higher torque.

1000cc has power at low revs and so is more useable on the road
600cc has to be revved high to get the power

Ok. So in essence, it feels like you have to ride a 600cc harder to get similar performance?

Correct, my 600 has to be worked to get the best out of it, dont be fooled though a 600 sports bike needs as much respect as a 1k, they both are rediculously fast Smile

Not many people can use the extra power a 1000cc bike has safely so on the track 600's are often just as fast or faster.

My 600 didn't feel that quick because the power was so smooth, only when you look at the clock you think oh shit thats pretty quick.

Torque. Ride a 1000cc then go to 600 and you'll miss it.

1000 will be quicker and you could probably feel it too and perhaps to an extent enjoy it more. Whether its worth the extra cost in tyres, isnruances, fuel, other consumables, well thats up to you.

Torque, end of story. On a bigger bike you can be lazier with the gearbox and still do nice fast overtakes, on a 600, you;d have to cog it down to get into the power then overtake. I had a Blackbird for about a year and that was the laziest bike I've ever ridden, damn fast though. When I went back to the Blade it felt gutless and buzzy, when I rode my mates GSXR600 (K4) it felt like a 125.

The GSXR is probably the quickest on the track though, high corner speeds, less mass to accelerate and brake and enough power if you keep the revs up. On the road, the Blade was the best compromise of pwer and handling, which is why I got rid of the Blackbird and bought another Blade.

Cheers

I was only in first gear to get the front up. Cool

I always used to see the clocks go up really quick and not think it was that fast, didn't really pull my arms or anything but when i went in my friends TT that felt alot faster as you were pinned into the seat.

Something I always found interesting, I know of two skilled track riders that can lap quicker on a 600 than on a 1000.

Just because it's hard to get the power down of a 1000, whereas it's easier to use more of the 600's potential.

not quite but a decent compromise
the 600s in some ways make more sense and to the normal to good rider they are better track bikes as they are more usable and ultimately more fun coz u can nail the throttle without having to be almost upright and out of 1st gear(speciafically lookin at both the current gsxr and zx10 which u cant fully open it till 2nd really)
on the road when its shite out the 600 is better
on the road when its nice and warm and not rainin/slippy/crap the 1000 is better
the torque makes it easier to drive fast and power is more accesible, 600s can be a pain to use day to day coz the power is all up top and therefore u cant be usin it round housin estates and such Smile

silver, if its the ultimate trackday tool, why do you use an r6 on the track instead ?

Because in many ways the GSX-R750 is a much better bike than I am a rider. The GSXR would be faster round a track (in the right hands), but I found I can ride the R6 harder. For example, at Oulton Park (in the rain) I was coming out of corners on the GSXR at virtually no revs, otherwise the back wheel was spinning up everywhere. Wouldn't have the same problem with the R6. I even considered a 400 trackbike for a while, just so I could thrash the nuts off it everywhere round a track! Twisted Evil

Hope that makes sense...

i find i enter corners a hell of a lot quicker than most people,
also my downfall 400 + bush.Sad
there was a few moments when i thought please dont spin please dont spin.
also why its claimed the untimate trackday tool, its not very cheap if you slam it into gravel with road kit on.

ismunday, i am pretty sure a 600 will go faster then 155mph.

I aint been on a 1000 before but it would be alot quicker, personally i would get a V-twin in a 1000.

The 2003 gives it away, surely? Razz Dynos vary wildly though.

I've just bought a GSXR6 so that I don't have to use my TL1000s during the winter. To be honest the gixer feels elastic band powered compared to the TL. If you scream it its actually quite quick but the power is all in a 500rpm band right at the top of the rev range. I'm not being nasty to anyone witha 600 but in my humble opinion they're a bit too dull. Mind you if there was any bike which i'm going to end up binning its the gixer. I don't respect it.
