Hi,

Should I use locktite on caliper bolts?

I put them on with copper grease to stop them from siezing on.

What's the recommended?

If anyone was to remove the caliper bolts from a new bike, they would find no copper grease and two stripes of (normally blue) loctite.

Never, ever use copper grease on caliper bolts (which just about every dealer does Rolling Eyes ), they should be thread locked in so that they can't vibrate out.

Cheers

Stuff you put on bolts that kinda acts like glue and stops the bolt from working loose due to vibration etc etc Thumbs Up

Oi ... not good enough for you in the Scottish section anymore?

Been working on bikes 20 years ... never used loctite on caliper mounting bolts ... always copper grease ... never had a bolt undo!!!

Bolts which should be torqued to a specific value should not be greased ... like caliper mounting bolts ... but again I've never ever had a problem.

All the best ... Barry

P.S. I'll forgive you this once Wink

Loctite is a brand name. They do a product called thread lock, which is what is being referred to here.

Anyway, a bolt isn't going to work loose over the course of a days rideout, is it?

Would probably take a while before it became dangerous Laughing

Meh... I was riding with a siezed caliper before anyway Laughing

OK smart arse Laughing

So when you ask for WD-40 you don't say, "can I have some water displacement solution please?", or "can I buy some metal polish?" when you just ask for Autosol, do you?

You use the brand name Thumbs Up Wink

I just thought that if someone wanted some they might be given superglue or something instead. Certainly don't want to use that on your caliper bolts. They do many products, so make sure you get what you need!

And I don't ask for those things, I just pick them up off the shelf Wink

Was just having a larf Laughing

However, it was only last year I discovered that Locktite was a brand - I thought that was what the product was called. I'm sure many other people think the same Thumbs Up

Nah, the product is nail polish, Loctite is just the professional brand name Very Happy .

By the way, some of the Loctite thread locks on basically meant for bolts that will never be undone.

All the best

Keith (who also uses copper grease on brake caliper bolts)

I've been using copper grease on my caliper bolts for about the last 15 years and I've never had one come loose yet.
Disk bolts come with loctite on when you buy em new, caliper bolts dont. Doesn't that tell you something?

Yes it will. If they're gonna come loose it normally happens straight away.

I use copper grease on caliper bolts as well. The blue stripes on the head of bolts are just to show they've been checked at the PDI.
