Does anyone know how to remove the variator? I have a Honda SFX 50cc (34MPH)...wwwooooooo lol

I took the pannel and gasket off and tried to remove the variator but it spins round in both directions. It doesnt affect the brake, so pulling the brake lever will not do it. I think I may need some kind of special tool to remove it then I can get to the washer to derestrict that part.

Yamaha said they would take the washer off the variator and also derestrict the exhaust for £80.00, but I only paid £300 for the bike and will hopefully be getting a Yamaha Aroex 50cc soon so dont want to be spending money if I dont have to.

You may say wait until I get the Yammy, but I want to test and in the mean time still use the SFX to get to work and back but go a little faster.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Razz

look @ wadebridge peds web site, hosted by jonnay? on this forum, theres a piece on there about fitting a performance variator, there is a tool to hold it in place. you can also hold the flywheel still with a large bladed screwdriver against the casing, but the tool is better

If I admit, I did use a screwdriver flat-blade against the case, but took aload of skin off my little finger and there was blood all over my tools and looked like I was in a butchers lol.

Doesnt need stiches, but badish...

I'll take a look at that website. Thanks mate.

Seems Im looking at about £10.00 for a locking tool, which is a long bar with a kind of circle in the middle with teeth to lock the variator in postion while I undo the bolt hodling it on.

yep, thats about right if the screwdriver wont do it, the tool works well, just dont over-tighten the nut afterwards as it will snap off the crank thread like a carrot, be sensible & use a drop of loctite on the thread.
If you decide to do the clutch springs you will need a BIG socket to get that off & probably an air gun too, again be very careful, because that big spring is VERY powerful.

Not sure about scooters, but on a bike you can often use an impact wrench to do it (air/electric) - this gives it lots of quick but high torque turns so that the engine etc doesn't have time to spin up.

(And I've got a battery impact wrench now - much goodness Very Happy ).
