Owned my VFR400R for a year now, and in that time it's become, quite frankly, a heap of shit!

Was pretty much spotless when I got it, except for a mark on the fairing and small crack in the screen. But for £900 who was I to complain about little bits like that.

https://img511.imageshack.us/img511/7643/hondavfr400290805008gm5.th.jpg https://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1232/hondavfr400290805010kc4.th.jpg https://img404.imageshack.us/img404/4033/img2962le5.th.jpg

Then 2 weeks later a twat in an Omega pulled out infront of me, and down I went.

https://img512.imageshack.us/img512/8999/sidefairingis4.th.jpg https://img230.imageshack.us/img230/7745/mirrorzl0.th.jpg https://img527.imageshack.us/img527/5218/frontfairingandindicatowr2.th.jpg

Fortunately, he admitted fault and I won the claim. Got a healthy payout, 300 quid more than I paid for the bike!

And since then, I haven't really cared for it, it's lucky if it gets a wash once a month lately.

So why am I doing this? I was recovered from Basildon on Saturday (3rd time in a year), because my engine started tapping. I still don't know what the cause is either, because I don't have a spark plug remover.

So instead of it just sitting there, I thought I'd take bits apart, clean (what is most likely) 18 years of dirt and crap from our shit roads, maybe give some bits a polish.

I've no idea if I'll continue this, it could be that I get the engine sorted then put it back together and never touch it again, but I might continue it, it depends on a number of circumstances.

So it began on Sunday, Luke came round and helped me to take the main bits off, bodywork, tank, airbox etc. Most of the time was spent trying to remove the bolt from the front fairing which lodged itself into the thread, so I'll have to drill that out fairly soon.

Removed front mudguard:

Discovered why it vibrates alot, it's only held on by one bolt:

And some pictures of it being gradually taken apart and to show you how dirty it is:

Then gave the swingarm a quick wipe and T-cut:

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/VFR%20Clean%20Up/28.jpg

Only one bulb seems to be working in the whole set of dials now...

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/VFR%20Clean%20Up/29.jpg

Shows how rusty the edge of my downpipes are:

Bits to be cleaned up:

So there we have it for now, will update as I get things done, until then, she's tucked up in the cold garage again Sad

Shocked That is one seriously dirty bike!

Craigs23 will surely jizz in excitement at how much fun he would have with it! Laughing

Best of luck mate Thumbs Up

Those pipes will need repairing, happens to all NC30's. The whole system is stainless steel except that bit, which overtime just rusts off. Take it to an exhaust repair place, I got mine repaired with stainless steel collars for about £20

Erm wouldn't it be worth trying to find the cause of the tapping in your engine /before/ you spend lots of time trying to tart it up Confused.

That's a pretty damn good price, will find a local place Thumbs Up

It would indeed, just bought a castle nut so should be able to drop out the engine
Thumbs Up
One idea is to buy LukeVFR's engine on the cheap, and transplant it, as it's a newer engine.

Oh and also, someone said that if I polish my downpipes, within a couple of rides they'll be going rusty again. This true?

Nope, they should just turn gold due to the heat. The polished surface should make it easier to clean afterwards, as baked on grime should just rinse off. Might need the odd Autosoling here and there, but shouldn't tarnish like alu does.

Sweet Thumbs Up

I bought this off Ebay for 12.50, it's a castle nut for the engine nuts, and the swingarm nut. So if the engine swap does take place, I can now do so Very Happy

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/VFR%20Clean%20Up/36.jpg

Also had a quick rub down with WD40 on my downpipes:

https://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/GrahamVFR/VFR%20Clean%20Up/37.jpg

And won all this on eBay for £22.50 Very Happy Bargain!

You'll need something stronger than WD40 if you want those pipes to shine.

A tip, in future please don't post as many pictures.

A lot of them aren't necessary, and even on broadband it takes a while for them all to load, and everytime a new one does, the post I'm reading jumps down off my screen.

re: the exhaust, I had a new stainless collar put onto my bandit downpipes for £20, was absolutely perfect aswell.

Confused Pictures are good! I find it annoying when people say they've done something, but don't show any pictures to show it. Pictures say a thousand words!

Sweet, still got to look into stuff to sort my downpipes. I don't think it'll blow as the other section goes inside it, but it's best to seal it anyway, incase it gets worse!

I'm not saying pictures aren't good, I love looking at pictures. But did we really need 2 pictures of your dirty can? And a picture of /each/ dirty rearset?

I like seeing them once, but when I have to load them /every/ single time I open this post. It's annoying.

All the best with the rebuild anyway!

Anyhow on with the original topic.

I haven't done alot lately as been busy with temporary jobs, just had a go at cleaning the rust off the downpipes with white spirit. Thumbs Up

What do you all think about spraying stuff black? I'm leaning towards a black effect all over.....black rearseats, pillion pegs, etc. Maybe even black downpipes.......

What do you think?

not black downpipes, that would look rubbish IMO. Get them shiny and would make the bike look much better.

Black Rear-sets sound a plan, maybe some aftermarket ones??
