Is there anywhere on the net that lists the byways on which we can ride legally in the UK? Being not far from the NYM, im wondering if theres anywhere around here which i can use the bike.

Your local TRF group should be able to help you get started.

If just looking at maps, get some OS maps and look in the key for 'Byway open to all traffic' and 'Other route with public access' as those are greenlanes you can ride on. They're like this +-+-+

There's info on the National Trust website about greenlanes down south, have a bit of a look around and I expect there's similar for ones up north.

I never worried when I lived in Devon, just put a big splat of mud on your No plate, slow down for walkers and horses and if anyone gives your grief just ask if they can confirm if the byway is closed.

Or just f*ck off, the police wont be able to catch you not even in a 4x4......there are some police trail bikes but I think they are mainly used for chasing junkies across parks in urban area's Laughing

Cambridgeshire County Council has a copy of the definitive map on their web site, and I think quite a few other councils have too. The definitive map shows exactly what status any given right of way has: footpath, bridleway, byway etc.

Don't be tempted to ride illegally, as if you're caught it can lead to having your 'bike confiscated and destroyed, a fine and points on your licence. Shocked

You could also get a well-deserved kicking from other trail riders whose hobby you're putting at risk (that's why lots of byways have been down-graded: illegal use). They will, of course, be wearing their MX boots to do the kicking Wink

There's lots of riding in the moors - as has been said already, join the the TRF, get along to a meeting and go on some of their rides. You might be able to borrow marked maps so you can mark your own.
