I know nothing about these things, but I have been considering getting one for various projects - is this a good deal to waste some cash on?

What does it come with? Why not just provide a link. 16A connector?

You can run it on a 13A socket but it is likely to trip the fuse on higher power settings.

Probably needs a commercial power supply 3 phase 440v

Anyway I have went into Aldi's two or three times looking for these elusive deals and got nothing. The lassies in the shop know nowt about the deals either.

Not for a 160a arc welder.

My 100a arc welder would trip/blow fuses if I used any sort of extension, even a 4mm one. Had to be direct into the wall right by the RCD box.

Current Aldi web site only shows offers up to Sunday 21 October.

There is this thread from a year ago that I suspect is the same unit.

I ran a 150A arc welder from a 13A socket, only tripped the switch when cranked right up. Just don't be tempted to do anything like replacing the fuse with a nail.

Mine only blows if welding with a 4mm rod and it gets stuck and not freed on time.

Ok with smaller or if you're careful.

Camp out all night in front of the nearest Aldi's?

If I'm passing one I'll pop in. The problem is if they don't have any I can't really unload both barrels into the poor store folks.... And Head Office give not one jot.

Very nice! Found my cheapo ebay 100amp arc welder was enough to turn the frame on my bandit 600 into a liquid on the higher settings. Laughing

If the tripping becomes an issue check your MCB for the sockets, more than likely they will be on a 32A ring or 20A radial, should not be a major issue to make one of the sockets outlets a 16A commando.

I think Walloper took this as meaning that it wasn't available. Bear with him, he's Scotchlanderish.

Welders are heavy and take lots of space so get the right type, what are you going to weld?

ARC welders are good for big things, like landrovers and tractors. BUT not much good for thin sheet.

ARC for >3mm
MIG for 0.8mm-3MM
TIG for awesome, but needs gas bottles..

would recommend getting a USED, but decent branded welder from ebay. My mig cost 60 quids, + £10 in parts/gassless wire, £15 for a decent mask/gloves

Managed to weld a fire extinguisher and weld a metal tank cap onto it. Fooking hard, but then again I am using 2.5mm rods. Need smaller ones but it is possible!!!
