PostPosted: 16:26 - 17 Aug 2006    Post subject: Changing Honda CBR125 Air Filter Reply with quote

Hi,
Straight in for my first post, and I need to know how to change the air filter on my 2005 CBR125 for the 7500 mile service.

How do I get the fuel tank off? I've removed the one bolt under the seat, but can't see what else keeps it on, and whether I should drain the tank from somewhere first.

Any help appreciated!

I know that I'm new here, but I'd appreciate some help. I'm a single woman, and passed my CBT 6 months ago. I can't afford to get the full service done at a garage, but can afford the £3 for an air filter. (And I don't want the typical comments I got when doing the CBT with 3 young guys)

If only I could get the beggar in there!
Rolling Eyes

How can Honda not make the filter come out the side in a cartridge or something?

Cheers!
Ellie

Sorry i can't be of any technical help but i know nothing about the cbr125. I had a look though my manual collection but i don't have one for that bike.

Although there are a couple of people on here who own/ed them who will know if they read the post you'll probably get a faster response asking here https://www.125ccsportsbikes.com/forums/index.php?showforum=15

Oh, and kudos for getting your hands dirty, too many people go running to a garage for everything these days. Thumbs Up

Going from what the config is like on my CG (Ok, totally different engines I know)

Remove right hand fairing.

Look for a largeish panel (Black plastic I think) with screws at each corner just above the engine where the carbs are.

Unscrew panel.

Air filter in there? If so, pull out, and slot the new one in.

Job done.

Toby, I wish the setup was like on your CG.

The airbox is split horizontally in half, so I have to unscrew the top section to get to the filter. To do this I need to lift the tank. They haven't made it easy for the home mechanic, perhaps so we have to go to a dealer?

Hey there, you will need to shift the tank to get to the air filter.

Seat off, bolt out, then you will need a little strength and dexterity (tho i manged it and im just a weak little woman Wink ) and slide the tank back and you'll see how it fastens in then. Obviously you can't take it off completely, just move it to the side and rest it securely so you can get to work on the air filter.

Remember to pull the breather pipe things up slightly and gently pull them back down when you replace the tank.

Good luck (but don't blame me if it goes horribly wrong!) I'm on my way to my bike today to clean my air filter so I'll be doing the same.

Cheers
Jo
ps you don't have the wiring diagram scanned by any chance do you? Mr. Green

Cheers Jo.
How do you support it when you move it to the side? I'll have a look at the weekend. I've got the seat off and bolt out so far anyway.
So, just lift the tank straight back, then to the side?
How do you support it then?

Ellie.

P.S. Sorry I don't have the diagram either. These bikes don't have the same amount of information kicking around as the big boys.

Have you found how to remove the fuel tank cover? I'm having the same problem. I found some illustrations about the air filter here https://kolik.planetka.cz/manualy/Honda/default.asp but the chapter 3-4 for the fuel tank removal is missing. What about you? Have you removed the tank?

gpktm, you got me excited there, but the manual is for an NSR125.

On the CBR, the tank is "the tank", not a cover for it.
Pity, cos there are wiring diagrams there too, that Jo was after.

Thanks anyway. The air filter box looks the same right enough.

So what about the tank? Did you manage to take it off? I must change my air filter and clean the carburator but I can't take off the tank. I removed the screw front of the seat but I cannot understand what other holds the tank Question I'm afraid that if I'm gonna pull it maybe broke something.

Sorry gpktm, I'm waiting until the weekend to have a look at it.
It's too dark when I get home to be doing it.

I don't want to break anything either. I'll end up pulling off a hose or something and get fuel everywhere!

Shocked

Ok. If you manage to do anything, PLEASE post. Meanwhile I'll continue to search how to get this thing off and I'll post if I'll find anything.

Blimey, lots of posts since I was last on!

Ok, I'll describe what I did on Thursday to get to my air filter (which was clean anyway!).

The tank seems a bit awkward when you first take it off, like the guy on the other thread says, theres a rubber 'bung' on the front tab which slides in snugly, so has to be pulled out once the bolt is out at the back. Don't be afraid of it, but likewise don't pull it with such force you launch it & yourself backwards or owt daft!

Right, supporting the tank. If I remember correctly there are 5 bolts holding the air filter lid on, two either side & one at the back. What I did was move the tank to one side, kind of tipping it and it seemed to rest on the frame ok. Be careful though. What would be ideal is if you could get another person to hold it for you, then you won't be worrying if it's ok.

Anyway, take out the two bolts on the side you have revealed, and the bottom one if you can reach it now. Then move the tank to the opposite side to get to the other two bolts. The lid will come off with a little manouvering and theres your filter.

Same drill for putting back together, but a word of warning when replacing the tank - I did knock a fuel pipe while doing this. I only realised when trying to start it later and soon discovered that engines don't start with no fuel going to them!

Anyway in my case there was no gushing fuel, I easily reconnected the pipe and no problem. But remember it is fuel, so take much care & maybe do it when you haven't got a full tank?

Hope this helps, good luck Smile
Jo

Sorry I was late getting her. Revising for resits. Yeah you got it the right way its all about pulling it back slow enough not to lose that poxy rubber bung (lots of tank rattling if you do.) but hard enough to actually get the tank off.
The CBR has got to be one of the most user unserviceable bikes out there. When you get tha hang of it theres not really much to it and the servicing actually becomes enjoybale.
Like i said sorry i got hear late and you'd already sorted it out. Hope all goes well Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

P.s when i done it one of my breather tubes come off but didn't manage to forget to reconnect the fuel line lol Mr. Green

You can't see the bung until the tank is actually off the bike. It goes into the headstock just below were the yoke connects. It is right under the black cover on the tank but you cant get that off again without first getting the tank off.

Just found an ebay photo and its the best i can find at the moment. I might check my filter out this weekend and if i do ill try and get some better pics so you can see properly. Thumbs Up

Just found another photo to give you an idea of just where the bung is. This probably illustrates it better. Thumbs Up

Thanks scott. I took it off, cleaned the filter. The problem remains though... Sad Must be the carb.

I don't really know to be honest. I had this problem once but think it was just a bad batch of fuel to be honest. Have you touched any o fthe screws on the carb as this would adjust mixture settings and result in running either lean or rich. I think both cause a loss of performance but not sure of their exact effects. The only other thing i can think of is a problem with the choke cable in that it may be stuck on a little and i think this would definitely cause poor running and engine damage. Like i said im not sure as im not a mechanic (yet) but these are two problems that need ruling out first.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Yay!
Longer than I wanted to wait for the air filter, which cost £10, but it is now fitted!
Thanks to you all for the encouragement and help.

Hopefully you can see the photos I took, so others can do it too...

The tank needed a firm pull to the rear to remove it from the rubber bung at the headstock. The tank can rest on the frame lightly, but hold it with one hand when you can! Best to have all your tools and a mug of tea to hand to start with!
