PostPosted: 10:50 - 26 May 2009    Post subject: What's your favourite cheese? Reply with quote

Last night I came to the realisation that I eat a lot of cheese. I would even go so far as to say it is my favourite food. I use it as an ingredient, as a topping (for chillis etc) and sometimes I just eat a huge great slab of it, just because...

As such I wondered if there are any other cheese lovers out there, and what their "fromage" of choice is.

I'll start:

For me it has to be the humble Cheddar! I love it's texture and full flavour. I usually go for mature/extra mature, and at Christmas I treat myself to some extra special ones, such as Isle of Mull/Lincolnshire poacher/Montgomery. I just find it has the best all round properties for cooking with and the taste isn't so overpowering that you can't taste anything else.

Please share your cheese views, and please note that "nob cheese" is not a valid answer!

Cheers

Drew

Any cheese is good cheese. As long as it's served with something fried.

Pilgrim's Choice. Especially for cheese on toast with marmite underneath, and salami bits on top.

Mmmm...just thinking about it is giving my tongue a bit of a stiffy...

I'm sitting here now with Derby cheese on toast with a bit of Worcestershire sauce because of this thread.

My favourite cheese is Red Leicester.

fresh chunks of parmiggiano (not bloody pamesan!!!)

drizzle with some olive oil and enjoy.

another tip (and try it if you don't believe me....)

parmiggiano shavings with pears.

don't knock it till you've tried it.

I bloody love cheese me! I rarely buy anything more than cheddar from a supermarket mind you - there's an amazing cheesemonger (that is actually an absurd word now that I type it) round these parts called I.J. Mellis which is really quite expensive but their cheese is worth the price (and trip - the closest one to me is about 15miles each way). I don't buy their cheese as often as I'd like though, but it's def a case of once I've tried their version of something I can't eat the supermarket one.

My all time favourite one is their Gorgonzola Dolce, but even then I only ever buy it in the summer because it's much creamier and it just flows (something to do with the ambient temperature when it's being produced and stored I think). Used to (and this is going to sound both a) weird and b) really quite posh!) go to St. Andrews with my ex and buy 200g or so of it, go down the beach with a bottle of Sauv Blanc and a baguette (not to roger her with before you say) and just eat it. Good times!

Also am a sucker for any kind of smoked cheese (even that plastic Austrian processed stuff you get in the sausage shape) so will usually buy something like Smoked Ardrahan whilst I'm there too - the tag on it in the St. Andrew's shop has a customer review on it which says 'tastes like burnt tires, but in a good way'...

Aargh - I want some cheese now, haven't bought some in ages cause I'm skint!

I don't like much about the French but they do make nice cheese, Roquefort being a particular favourite of mine (the smellier the better)!!!

Depends on my mood, but I never turn down a nice mature cheddar, Edam's good and so is Wensleydale with cranberries, and if there's crackers and grapes around then Stilton goes down well too.

Brie/Camembert is just vomit from someone who overdosed on Dairylea, pressed into shape.

I have moments when I crave for cheese.
Other day watching 'come dine with me' I just had to go buy some blue cheese - to Claires disgust I ate the whole lot in one go - She can stand the smell so a good excuse for no kissing. Ahem.
I like most - I live the cheese with bits of apple/cranberry ect init.

A wodge of room temperature brie with some crackers and a bunch of crisp seedless grapes is absolute heaven.

For everyday cheese purposes, proper strong cheddar or caerphilly in toasties. Thumbs Up

Best cheese for just eating is called "black bomber" Once again from the snowdonia cheese company. They deliver it in polystyrene boxes with ice and such so it stays cool.

So creamy but not in a bad way. I don't like brie or those other ones.

I also like cathedral city on pasta/toast/chillis

A lot of faith in the BCF masses there!!!

loving the replies! for the record, my wife loves Blue Wensleydale... I'm personally not fond of most blue cheeses (but then most blues I've had are from supermarkets), although the few "proper" ones I've had were very palatable.

Try strong cheddar on sesame ryvitas with Habanero Jelly smothered over the top... Very Happy

Tasty or crumbly Lancashire is a good cheese, especially for cheese on toast with a dash of Worcestershire sauce (Lee & Perrins of course) and any blue cheese, Stilton, Danish Blue. For everyday use I just buy a block of good old versatile cheddar

Gorgonzola. Although it is very antisocial cheese.

Whatever cheese. It ought to be at room temperature for flavour.

I poured some Channel Island brie onto biscuits for my supper last night.

Almost any cheese will do me, although I’m not a huge fan of goats cheese or some of the stronger smoked cheeses.

I was hugely addicted to Blacksticks Blue last year, but I fear I may have overdosed because I suddenly don’t find it so appealing. It is very good if you like blue cheese though.

On the milder side I’m quite partial to a bit of President Emmental, especially as part of a cheese and ham sandwich.

Last night I made puff pastry tarts with tender stem broccoli covered with thin slices of Cambozola. Bake for ten minutes and they were gorgeous…

… actually, that sounds a bit ghey, but they were very nice indeed. Very Happy
