THIS THREAD IS 6 YEARS OLD!!

With selling the TL, one potential buyer is wanting coming to look at it this weekend and the plan he want to go with is he is going to leave a deposit (assuming the bike is as per description etc) and pay the rest at the end of the month after he's been paid and collect the bike then.

Now as you probably know people use the fact they can come and pay with cash as an incentive, but as good as it is, there is the risk that it is counterfeit cash.

I know the things like checking for the watermark, doing a small tear to see if the foil strip is all the way through, but how else can I easily check if the money I get is real or not? Has anyone had any experience with those pens they sell in newsagents which claim to be able to be used to detect counterfeit money?

I am aware of how easy it is for people to make their home computers and printers into a little money factory, so whats the best way of making sure I don't get caught out by fake cash? Confused

Thanks people. Thumbs Up

the bank of england text on the cash should be rought to the touch this is a way of check large amouts of cash as you just run you nail over them.

used to get so many fake notes at sainburrys were people had printed it off (and they allways claimed it was there change from the petrol station Neutral )

UV light - probably the best way.

The feel of real money is also completly different to counterfiet money. Go and feel a sheet of A4 paper, then some cash you'll feel the difference.

Check the metal strip, the queen's watermark, and the swirls at the top of a note, if you look reeeeally closely, the swirls are made up of the words "Twenty Pounds", or something like that. No real computer printer would be able to print these accurately.

Well for a start the money should have a Hologram on it, wich should change colour when moved in the light, the hologram would be quite hard to fake on a computer tbh.

And also the feel of the note would be considerably different, as for the pens I don't think they work to be honest.
Plus most places these days seem to use UV detectors etc rather than the crappy pens.

If you're worried about his money being counterfeit, don't accept cash. Ask for a bankers draft or cheque.

Or, trundle over to the bank with him and deposit the money into your account. If there's a problem, you can deal with it there and then with him being present. Mind you, technically, he's paid you so if the money has been found to be counterfeit, it's YOUR money which is counterfeit, not his anymore.

Anyway, I'd play safe, ask for a bankers draft. Good luck. Thumbs Up

Plenty of fake bankers drafts around. The guy I bought my Bimota from had been ripped off with one when selling an SB8R just before, and his better half worked in a building society so should have known how to check it.

All the best

If he's not going to pick it up till the end of the month anyway, then a cheque would probably be the best idea.

Definatley UV light. It works on all official documents. Try your passport or driving licence. The coloured shape at the bottom of each note should rub off some of the colour onto white paper. This is what these pens do. These are the best two ways to check.

My boss gave me a fake twenty once and I spotted it straight away. It just didn't feel right, not the same quality used by the Royal Mint.

Thanks people. Smile

Am having a look around at the UV lights as those seem to be the most popular answer of how to avoid fake cash. Smile

Ill make sure I check that it doesn't feel like A4 paper, and look at the detail of the quality of the money.

There is generally more problems with cheques and bankers drafts as these can be faked more easily, or cheques can just bounce and are general hassle anyway. Which is why I want to be able to tell the difference between real cash and fake cash and it's generally probably quite a useful thing to be able to do I would reckon. Laughing

Good point actually. Thumbs Up Will see what the guy says next time I speak to him about this idea, as he said he can pay cash as he has just sold his car so I'm guessing has a nice wodge of cash.

Will have to see what he says about that idea. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the help. Thumbs Up

If memory serves, bank notes are pressed at something like 30 tons pressure whereas a standard sheet of paper is a little under 5 tons when rolled, hence the totally different 'feel' to the papers. This means the paper weave and printing will also show up very differently under magnification (3d effect, basically), and unless you have distinct goth tendencies and want a UV light source in the house then a magnifying glass is much cheaper Wink

(I *think* the process is known as intaglio printing, useless fact for the day).

Ste I have a UV light that you're welcome to borrow.

Never used it for checking money before though.

Just a little tube job, runs off AA batteries.

Take some of it down to the local shop and ask them to check it for you, that's your safest and simplest bet.

If it's for the deposit, then you have plenty of time to pay it into the bank; if they say no, then you give it back.

If it's for the bike at the end then get them to go with you to the bank with the money and pay it in, if it goes in you're fine.

I believe along the top edge of notes near where it says bank of england you should be able to feel the braille equivalent of £20

On a £50 note, rub the red triangle at the bottom middle of the Queen side. If it leaves a red mark it is not fake if it doesn't it is fake.

It might be the other way round, so someone please clarify this for me, oh and this is what I learnt in the shop so it is probably wrong lol. Smile

If it rubs off, it's real. At least that's what I was taught when in retail.

But the most counterfeit note is the £20 I believe.

I work in a pub, dealing with counterfeit money is a common thing. The pens you ask about are fine to use and simple too, if it leaves a mark it's fake, if it leaves no mark then it is good to go!

Simples! Wink

Erm, not sure it's an issue for Ste now, seeing that he was asking 6 years ago and the thread was resurrected by a spammer?

What's with all this messing about, just have him do a bank transfer.

Once it's 'cleared' read cleared not available, then you are safe.
