Recently had to clean the timing cover on my RoverV8, was really manky, dirt, oil sludge etc.

Tried a new route and stuck it in the dishwasher*, not mine of course my parents one Twisted Evil, better to use theirs for testing purposes Mr. Green. Used the industrial setting and a couple of 'tablets' for good measure.

Came back when it had finished and Shocked it was major clean (and dry). Got rid of all the cack and left a perfect surface for painting.

Recommend it to anyone if you have access to a Dishwasher.

* Note: no dishwashers were hurt during the making of this post! Thumbs Up

good tip!

heard of something along these lines before i think it was in Fastbikes you can put gunked up parts off a crosser to get them clean and sparkling!

i suppose if you stripped a bike down you could put all sorts in.

Hi

If I tried that I would be dead. Very dead.

But it does get tempting to buy a cheap 2nd hand dishwasher to live in the garage.

All the best

Keith

I've been reading the racebike project on www.reservoircogs.com with that Luke from RiDE I think it is. Maybe some other mag, I forget.

Anyway, they tend to dishwash quite a few things!

I, along with Keith would also be very dead if my mum found bike parts in the dish washer.

A mate of mine did his GS thou head, barrels and crankcases in the dishwasher (sent his missus shopping to be on the safe side) and I was convinced he'd bought new.

My dad saw me stick the timing cover in Embarassed

he's like:
Dad: "wot you doing"
Me: "um..er..just cleaning some of my engine"
Dad: "are you sticking that dirty engine bit in my Dishwasher"
Me: "umm, yep"
Dad: "errr...ok"

Very Happy

Almost tempted to use mine as a 100% parts cleaner now, never cleaned any dishes in it since I got it anyway (was just to fill a gap in my kitchen)! Rolling Eyes

Just do it when she is out. Make sure you clean out the sediment trap at the bottom just in case she finds a tell-tale screw/washer/rowl pin in it which would be a dead giveaway.

Best to quickly bung a load of dishes in and have it running when she gets back, they have an uncanny knack of noticing things like it having been switched on.

Like my Mum walking into the kichen "I can smell burning oil...and my oven has been on." (how did she notice that?) "Have you been putting bits of motorbike in my oven?" (I had, was fitting new mains to my Jawa).

Doubt it'd work in our dishwasher. In all the adverts you see Ainsley etc. put in a dirty, baked on tray and it comes out pristine and shiny. Apparently, according to the missus, not in ours. I've been told to rinse everything before putting it in the dishwasher Confused

So there was I at the sink with this stack of rinsed and to me clean pots and plates thinking "Why do we need the dishwasher if I've just cleaned them all?" Rolling Eyes Brick Wall

Without resorting to mechanical devices best stuff I've found for cleaning/degreasing is brake cleaner.

Aye, but she can't stay in the house all the time just in case you put bits of engine in the dishwasher when she's out.

This isn't rocket science. Any half decent engine shop has a "hot tank" set up which is basically an industrial kinda dish washer thats runs VERY fucking hot..... & you really do NOT want to get the detergent from those things on your skin. Some are so efficient that they will destroy aluminium parts from the caustic (lye) in the detergent.
They do a helluva job on steel tho Thumbs Up Place near here has one large enough to take 3 V8 engine blocks at the same time or 7 or 8 heads etc
