filtering past a funeral procession?

on my way into work this morning the traffic was moving very slowly, filtered to near the from and realised there was a funeral procession (a herse and 2 limos). i had the dilemma of wether to filter past them or slot in behind. This was made worse by the fact that the coffin in the herse had a motorcycle helmet on top.

i decided to stay behind and wait it out until they turned of. wondered what everyone elses view on this is?

I would more than likely either wait or find another route out of respect. Although if it was a motorcyclist (like you say) you could have filtered and paid some respects with a nod or such.

You did the right thing IMO. I wouldn't overtake a herse simply out of respect regardless of whether I knew them or not. It's their final journey to their resting place and people should sacrifice the few seconds / minutes they'd gain by overtaking as a mark of respect. But maybe I'm old fasioned and some may feel filtering past is fine.

you made the right call... if it were me i would have slotted in behind or made a u turn and found another route... i'd never overtake an occupied hearse unless i absolutely had no other choice than to do so.

Agree with all the above. Slotting in and riding behind is about the nicest thing you can do.

I think overtaking it makes you look like a bit of a dick, and it's nicer to the person/family by just slotting in.

I remember coming off a roundabout to a huge queue, shot past most traffic and waiting near the roundabout at the end of the road was a large amount of funeral cars and a coffin... baring in mind i'd been flying past this traffic...

Out of respect I obviously stayed behind, was noticed by the car and gave a genuine "hand up" saying sorry, totally unaware... got a hand back from a family car.. I then changed my journey as it seemed countless eyes were stabbing me

I am fully in-line with the need for respect, but surely a fellow biker would appreciate you filtering, enjoying one of the clear benefits of a bike? I know I wouldn't want my funeral procession to hold anyone up more than necessary. I think a respectful overtake with an appropriate salute would be fitting.

Yep, always stay behind no matter what, as a mark of respect. It was the one excuse you could use for being late when despatching - got caught behind a funeral cortege. I used it all the time - it's a wonder I haven't been struck down yet

I spent the early years of my life in Ireland, where traffic in both directions will stop until the funeral procession has passed. Or at least that's how it was 17 years ago.

It would be inappropriate to stop here, but I still coast past quietly if I am going the opposite direction, and never overtake unless on a dual carriage way, and even then slowly and quietly.

They're dead..Life continues. The mourners will still wee and poo, the funeral blokes will eat a butty and have a smoke whilst waiting outside the church.

The living i respect best i can.... it's proper sad and upsetting when someone close passes(i'm old enough to have lost lots of people i have loved).

I do notice that i don't blip the throttle when i'm passing...Does that count?

sometimes overtaking is unavoidable (dual carriage way, emergency ect), but i agree that if overtaking should be done as respectfully as possible and not ragging past as fast as you can

When I bite the bullet I've left express instructions for the procession to drive as fast as possible



I had job taking a urn of ashes from a house top the garden of remeberence, the daughter explains her dad (natural causes) was bike mad and half the family wanted a bike themed funeral, the other half won but conceeded that they didnt mind his ashes going by bike, when I arrived the daughter said
"Can you take the Long way round and as fast as you like, it woulda put a smile on his face!"

If I was late for something herse or not I'd be filtering, my boss isn't going to take lightly to "But sir, there was a herse!"

Was going down the A259 towards Brenzett the other week and there was a hearse in front doing about 40. Nothing went past for the whole 9 mile stretch.
