Does anybody know the legality (or for that matter the appropriateness) of listening to music through headphones whilst riding a bike?

Question

There's a big thread on it in New bikers > this one. I think the answer eventually was that it is legal.

Its not against the law, just advisable not to have heavy metal and stuff putting you off riding.
If like me someone pulls out on you and you crash while wearing them, get a mate to take the walkman out of your pocket before the services get there or you'll be paying out.

Yeah that's right: There's no law against it, but if at the scene of the accident-you're seen to have been listening to music, you could be done with not riding with due care and attention.

''In answer to your question, I am unaware of any law disallowing the wearing of earphones to listen to music whilst riding a motorbike.

However, if you were involved in an incident/ accident whatever, and in some way (goodness knows how) the cause could be put down to your inattention caused by listening to said music, you may be in play for careless driving. ''

that all sounds pretty sensible. Had a look at the other thread - thanks for that. I used to listen to headphones when cycling all the time no worries.

All the best,

Ok. Now the legality has been resolved can I ask a question about headphones? (don't want to go off-topic Wink).

I've tried the inner ear walkman type.
A find them quite awkward with a helmet. They either fall out or are uncomfortable.

Anyhow, I've just got a pair of the flat type designed for helmets, they fit with vercro behind the padding.
I just wondered if I should still wear earplugs with these. My personal preference would be yes but not sure how this will affect the performance (more volume=flat battery quicker on MP3 player).

Have you tried Sony Fontopia phones? They're in-ear but they're not hard plastic, they've got a rubber bit instead. It makes them pretty comfortable, they sit more in-your-ear, and they partially act like earplugs. I haven't tried them on the bike though (not much point with the race can).

They're what I use. I've always found them to be a really good fit for my ears. They work OKish with a helmet, but I'm not sure I'd want to travel too far with them in as they can (unless seated just right) get rather uncomfortable.

My bro bought some Sony ones with the same stuff ear-plugs are made of. They had a tube ging through the middle of the plug. They were excellent for sound quality. i'll see if I can find the name

That is silly about the blame of not giving due care and attention, blah, blah, blah....

I mean, you can have a £1K sound system in your car blasting music out at 100 decibells (sp) if you like!!!!!! Rolling Eyes

Personally I don't and don't think I would listen to music, I like the sounds round about me, but if I did, I'd probably only put one earphone in anyway!

These? (clicky picky for linky)

https://www.hifibitz.co.uk/uploads/products/std/1752_mdrex71.jpg

The sound quality is the best ive heared, they are very comfortable, however it will depend on your helmet, mines a flip up, i can pull the sides of the helmet so they dont drag accross my ear and dislodge it, same with takeing off (wich with a normal helmet will tear your ear off no matter what earphones you get!)

Usually i'll tend to have the left ear in when i'm useing them, but longer journeys consisting of 90% mototrway i hav had both in, it makes the journey sooooo much more bearable.

I'd like to try some of those custom moulded to your ear type plugs, but they are horrificly expensive for what they are (however clever they may be)...

If you dont want to pay allot for headphones try some cheepo ones, stuff them down the side of the cheek pads on your helmet just near your ear and tape the wire to the ouside of the helmet, now trun the volume up and you have music, you wont even feel they are there, only dissadvantage is haveing a wire stuck to your helmet, but with a sterio extension and by hideing the wire in the helmet you wont see it...

Gracie, most of the responses i got back, when i asked this question was to try it. Do it, and if you feel that it puts you off when you are riding then dont do it. simple.

See this link.

BASS MONSTERS are high volume ultra-thin (only 9.5mm (3/8in) deep) stereo speakers which plug into any personal AM/FM radio, tape, MP3 or CD player. Just plug them in and hold on to your socks! You're in for a sound explosion!

Velcro backed BASS MONSTERS install in seconds! Just press them into your helmet's ear pockets or hang them directly to the helmet lining. The convenient 2-piece quick-release cord lets you disconnect in an instant, leaving just a short undetectable cord on your helmet.

I subscribe to the same theory, best of both worlds, ambient noise, & cool tunes to while away the time.

Very Happy Thumbs Up

same, ive been riding n listenin to music on and off for a couple of months now, i tried the normal, sit in your ear style ones, but they always fall out. so i payed out £5 at HMV and got me some of the wierd "wrap around" type, and they work realy well, comfy and dont fall out, although they arent very loud and cant hear it over my bloody NSR half the time but hey, its usefull for wen u hit traffic lights or something Very Happy and yea, i also only ride with one earphone in at once, that way your always alert to the noises around you with a nice ambient background. i find it brilliant wen i go for rides out in the fens, just emtpy fields all around, blue sky..sun shining down, and some nice music in my ear, its almost perfect Very Happy

The only problem I can see is when you turn the volume up high enough to hear over the wind noise and engine etc. I think it's rather damaging. Besides, I've got one of those helmet headphones for my walkie-talkie, don't know where I'd put the headphones. Confused

I use these, great sound and comfy.

The only downside is finding the right ones that will stay in your
ears.
